Default Rainy weekend project - "L'esprit Liberté"

The L'esprit Liberté world tail only graced Air Liberté planes in real life, but I always thought it would have looked good on a 747. One "Rendezvous" donor model, some quick Photoshop lessons and a rainy weekend later...

I chose G-BNLB as the fictitious recipient, as that frame never received a "World Tail", going straight from Landor into Union Flag. She joins the other "shoulda coulda woulda" 747 World Tails that never flew, but managed to make an appearance in my collection. Next up will be either "Grand Union" or the unique blue Koguty Lowickie variant.

Very nice John. The setting and finish looks beautiful on the 747. I can imagine you still have quite a few projects ahead of you with regard to creating fictitious tails.
Has BA (at the time) ever considered expanding the world tails with new designs or was the world tail phase always a fixed set of designs?
regards, Marc

Thanks. Although my skills fall short compared to these here, the time spent doing this provides some level of satisfaction and a creative outlet.

Not fictitious in that I don’t plan to create any new tails, but absolutely so in that I can imagine what might have happened with expansion of the use of existing designs had the program carried on for a little longer.

Once the decision was made to standardize on the “Chatham Dockyard” flag for the entire fleet, not only were any approved but not yet applied designs shelved, but BA began to selectively but systematically “forget” about this period of history.

Take a look at the recent books published by Paul Jarvis from the BA museum - only a fleeting mention of the “Utopia project”.

I met Paul in the BA museum some years ago and he was certainly not a fan, so I am sure this had something to do with it. He indicated that there were indeed a set of approved but not applied designs. The design artwork was over at the LHR maintenance area, not in the museum on the day that I visited, but he said he would bring them over so that I could see them if I visited again. Sadly, since then, he passed away and COVID has stopped all travel.

For my own amusement, I will produce models as reasonably priced donor models become available. That, and space to keep them is the gating factor. If the other designs ever came to light, it would be good to see them, but I suspect that they will never see the light of day again.

I read an article once by Paul Jarvis in a design magazine. I believe he explained in it why the world tails did not stick.
It would be great if you manage to get a hold of the never implemented designs. It would be fantastic if you could recreate those.
Well, maybe wishful thinking.....

Wonderful craftsmanship, that was a great tail! I’m very fond of F-GPVA, the DC-10 you have too!

Thanks for sharing something unique!

As requested in a PM - here is the other side (which was not done when I took the original photos). The reg is crooked and needs to be redone.

I like them, but as you know I’m very biased!

Do you have any other pictures of ‘Sterntaler’ and ‘Colour Down the Side’ please? I haven’t seen those two before on a 747 and they both look great.

Thanks!

This is the only one that I have online, with an early version of the decal application (see the wrinkle). I found a picture of the original clay tiles and matched the pattern from that. The colors are brighter than the tiles but match the commercially available 737 decal sets.

Thanks John, much appreciated - that looks great on a 747. I want to attempt this one and ‘Golden Khokhloma’ at some point, but need to find a printer than can print the metallic gold… they exist, but seem to be expensive!
