History

About eleven years after KLM ("Koninklijke Luchtvaart Maatschappij", which stands for "Royal Aerospace Company") added its first jet aircraft to the fleet, the Dutch airline introduced its first Boeing 747. The so-called jumbo jet, developed at the Boeing plant in Everett, was the start of a new widebody era. On 31 January 1971, the PH-BUA, christened Mississippi, landed at Schiphol. This improved version of the 747-200 (the B747-206B) was the first to be delivered by Boeing. After about two weeks, the first commercial flight of the jumbo jet to New York was a fact. Abouth a month after the first B474 landed at Schiphol, it was PH-BUB's (The Danube) turn to join her eldest sister, and PH-BUC and PH-BUD would follow in August and July. It was not an easy job to bring the 747 to the Netherlands. To be able to handle the aircraft properly, many adjustments were necessary, such as modifying the piers at Schiphol. Also the enlargement of the hangar at Amsterdam Airport was necessary to accommodate the 747.

The scale model

Specifications

Brand : ARD Models
Year : 2018
Scale : 1/200
Serial nr : ARD2067
Material : Metal diecast, assembled
Dimensions : 13.9 x 11.7 inches
Comes with : Rolling gears, spinning engines, stand

The model shows the PH-BUB in the livery known as "the KLM 80s colours". This colour scheme was already introduced during the same year the first B747's joined the company, but still after they arrived, more precisely by the end of that year. Therefore PH-BUB initially came in the prevailing white livery, marked by the two-tone blue cheatline. The first 747 to be fitted with a blue roof was the PH-BUC. It was not until after April 1973 that PH-BUB received its blue jacket. By the time the last KLM aircraft received the blue colours, that was a DC-8 in 1978, all B747s were flying the new colours. PH-BUB continued to operate in these colours until it left KLM in 1989.

Again a very nice review, enjoyed it. Hope that inflight releases a blue 747-206 with a six window upper deck!

Nice KLM B747-206B ya got there, also one of their best liveries imo, when my mother sister & I flew with the PH-BUU "Sir Frank Whittle" it also wore the same livery as the model you are showing here.

But my favorite KLM liveries are the White Top Livery & Wave Livery the last.

White Top Livery is the one before this one, which my PH-BUA has, also the one I flew with on Jan 21, 1980 via this route:

Amsterdam - Dubai - Singapore Melbourne - Sydney

As the model goes also from Inflight 200, which is this one:

Back in 1980 it did have the same livery as your but still the 2x 3 windows on the upper deck the Bar & Lounge were also still presents as I was informed, his was removed in 1984 as the PH-BUA went.

Wave Livery was the laast livery KLM used for their B747's so this is how I Displayed these two as the last on the stand and the first under it, also the first & Last B747 that flew for KLM as well, so an ironic yet epic display as well, it comes in all ways round.

Boeing 747-406M
KLM Royal Dutch Airlines "Wave Livery 2015-Pressent"
PH-BFT "City of Tokyo"
Scale 1:200
JC Wings

------------------------------------
Boeing 747-206B
KLM Royal Dutch Airlines "White Top Livery 1971-1976"
PH-BUA "The Mississippi"
Scale 1:200
Inflight 200

Limited Edition 1 of 240pcs

KLM has always been among the world's best when it comes to service.
I think that during the period that you flew with them, they really were the absolute top, not?

Thank you Goldie, and indeed, as David also did, you are again showing that this hobby is so much more than just buying a piece of metal, placing it in a cabinet and just looking at it. Behind nearly every model is a story, and sharing these stories is what makes these models even much more interesting.

Great to have these two models, who have written an important history for KLM, and have put the Netherlands on the world map for almost five decades....
