Default Pics: Eastern - We Want Everyone to Fly

Arrived at Gate 6 today! Thank you, Gemini200 for producing this! This is an excellent option for those of us who want an Eastern 727 in our collection but can't afford secondary market prices on the -200 variant models. I know some were hoping for a bare metal version, but perhaps that's coming! I realised after I pre-ordered this model, something significant about the airframe on a personal level. I know you guys don't care about my personal stories, but for me, part of collecting is to sometimes have a personal connection with models I buy. I was barely in my teens & we lived in Daytona Beach, FL. A maternal aunt flew down to visit us from Richmond, VA. I vividly remember standing at the fence watching the plane she was on touch down & taxi to the gate. She was on an Eastern B721. It was the first aircraft I ever saw in person & seeing it ignited my passion & interest in aviation. From that moment, I wanted to be a commercial pilot, but couldn't due to significant hearing loss in my left ear. Now that I finally have a model of an Eastern aircraft in my collection, the hunt is now on for Delta (widget). I'd be surprised if G200 releases another 727 but I'm hoping IF will eventually release the L-1011 they cancelled. Fingers crossed!!

Eastern - We Want Everyone to Fly!

Aircraft and model details:
Boeing 727-25C; N8164G
Eastern Air Lines
Serial No. 19720; Line No. 482
First flight 19th October 1967
Delivered to Eastern 9th November 1967
Gemini200 G2EAL944, produced 2021
Special Notes: "Whisperjet" titles were removed when Eastern went to bare metal; delivered to Fedex as N128FE "Stuart Shawn" in November 1982

I find the personal stories of why people buy a certain model to be interesting, whether it evokes memories of the past or whatever reason the plane has sentimental value, so feel free to write on! I’m sure others like the back stories, too.

I also wanted to be a commercial pilot, but I don’t have 20/20 vision, and back in the 1980s, it was a real obstacle. The military wouldn’t train me as a pilot, and going the civilian route wasn’t an option, either, getting my license and getting my hours in, because back then, you couldn’t even get hired by a commuter. Now it’s no longer an issue, you can have corrected vision. With contacts, my vision is 20/15, but it’s too late and I’m too old. I ended up being a flight attendant, quite a compromise in pay, but it’s been a good ride for the past 32 years! I can relate to you.

Like you, I didn't have 20/20 vision, either. The lenses in my eyeglasses were so thick they resembled the bottom of a pop bottle. I was able to get contact lenses in the late 70s but they weren't ideal. (Naturally dry eyes made worse by wearing contact lenses.) I finally got LASIK in 2001 but I was too old at that point to pursue it. You became a flight attendant. I went into reservations. We both ended up in the airline industry, at least. I'd still love to work for Virgin.

Sorry it didn't work out for you two. Some great advice that is rarely given because too many people don't remember to think about it involves medicals. You see some people go to college for ATC and never think about it. Some of the best advice I ever heard someone tell a kid before they began was go get your Class II before you commit the next few years of your life to school.

Thanks, kind sir. I actually got really close to being hired by Eastern. They flew me down to Miami twice for testing & interviews. I had a cousin (by marriage) who worked for them & I had hoped her referral would help. Just didn't make it. But I was later hired by Piedmont. Great company to work for.

Au contraire - I think the personal stories behind the models we buy are a large part of why I enjoy this hobby. The models I've flown on or have some other personal connection to are definitely more meaningful to me.

And I'm largely in the same boat as you guys - bad eyes prevented me from going the military pilot route, and I started down the path of working my way up through the civilian route but then I got a job with the networking company I've been with for 20 years now and a) didn't have as much time to train and b) couldn't justify the pay cut anymore to go that route, so I let it slide. At least I've been able to fly a lot because of that job, whether for business or pleasure, but I still think sometimes I should have stuck with getting my license anyway.

Anyway cool pics of the Eastern 721

Thanks guys for your comments & stories. I've pondered over the years whether I'd still be in the aviation industry had I stayed with Piedmont. (I quit the airline so I could move to a different city to be in a romantic relationship.) I was in reservations but I really wanted to be a gate agent, so I could be close to the planes.

Delta dc-8, hopefully that L-1011 will see the light of day. I'm curious if it was in production when it was cancelled. I'd be more than happy to pay a bit more for it just so Delta could get paid their fees.

I finally found one in stock after the reported shortage! I guess if my preorder (which I normally don't do) gets filled at the end of May I will have 2! Wonder what happened with the retailers not getting all their allotment!?

I wasn't aware of a shortage? Quite a few are on eBay. I've been buying from JetCollector, and that's who I preordered from. He seems to be a nice guy, is responsive, and is located in California (as am I) so models don't stay in transit for very long.

Most of those on Ebay are preorder, at least as of yesterday!

Yes, I've purchased in the past from Jetcollector and they are good.

Well if I receive my second one (pre-order/backorder), I will go to Home Depot or Lowes and see if I can find a board stretcher and try an use it to turn it into an Eastern 727-200!

Another beautiful model. It makes me want to buy one too, but I notice that AviationMegaStore and ScaleModelStore don't offer it anymore, and on DiecastTrading this model is listed as pre-order (very strange).

Anyway, I'm also impatiently hoping for a 1/200 Eastern L1011...

Maybe the UK & EU receives G200 models later than the US? I'm not really sure. Several retailers here still stock them.

A collector (?) on one of the Facebook groups I belong to had the bare metal finish version of an Eastern L-1011 for sale, but he wanted €450 for it. He also has the TWA delivery livery L-1011 for sale, €550.

Great model. When we lived in Chicago, late 60s, our neighbor was an EAL 727 Captain. His route was ORD-MIA. Always loved the hockey stick livery.

On AviationMegaStore the model was added not even a couple of weeks ago. And now they are already saying "no longer available from us."
I find that a little bit strange. I would not be suprised another batch will arrive during the coming weeks.

How does this work? Do they produce a new model always in one single batch with a predetermined fixed number of copies?
Or is it also possible that, when a model sells quickly out, they decide to produce a second batch?

Your guess is as good as mine as to how it works. I'm pretty sure UK/EU countries receive Inflight models before the US, but I've not a clue about Gemini. I'm clueless regarding whether models are produced in batches, too. Perhaps someone with knowledge will see this and respond.

All indications I've seen from manufacturers show that production is usually set up months in advance so it would be unlikely that they would change on the fly like that.

Last saturday, I discovered by chance that three copies were still available at DiecastTrading.com. Despite the rather expensive price (but still a lot less than what is asked on Ebay) and their rather high shipping costs I thought, "God, why not?", and I ordered one. For those who are still looking for one, don't hesitate : https://www.diecasttrading.com/en/12...-b727-100.html

Creating a new thread to show this new acquisition is a bit exaggerated, but I hope Randy that you don't mind that I enrich your thread with a few pictures of my copy?

My apologies, the photos are slightly overexposed.

Cheers, Deephalo

I am very happy to have the chance to buy this model today from ACB as I also have nice memories of watching all those EASTERN airplanes 1988 in ATL.

Furthermore the model will fits perfectly in my exhibition (will post pics later after its arrival) and at least…

The registration is also very nice, as today is my birthday by born in ’64

That's a nice Eastern B727-25C /125C (being a B727-100 series)

It gives a cool and refreshing look during these humid summer times

This is THE best 1/200 Boeing 727 ever produced ! Unfortunately it was produced
in far too small quantities.

After much frustration I finally managed to acquire one of these models.

It is THE best Eastern color scheme of all!
