Default Pics: What's Purple & Pink and Rides like a Dream

It's the Dreamliner painted in the "Dreams Take Flight" livery! This model has been on my radar for a while. I even set an eBay search notification & each time one became available, I'd vacillate on whether to buy it. I finally asked myself why I set up the notification if I'm not going to buy one so I finally pulled the trigger. It's the fifth 787-9 in my collection & what a beauty it is. On 19th Sept. 2015 when I toured ZA003/N787BX at Seattle Museum of Flight, I knew I had to fly on a 787. I didn't know how or when because I'd not flown internationally since February 1989 (MIA-LHR). The day arrived on 30th April 2017, on Virgin Atlantic's "Miss Chief" G-VOOH, SEA-LHR. During that flight, the 787 became my favourite modern aircraft, with the A350 now my second favourite. This "Dreams Take Flight" livery is undeniably gorgeous! My only tiny nitpick about the model is, I wish the cockpit windows had been printed in a slightly lighter colour. Thanks, Russell for asking Johan to produce this.

Aircraft and model details:
Boeing 787-900; N1015B
The Boeing Company
Serial No. 60327; Line No. 891
First flight 2nd August 2019
JC Wings EW2789007, produced 2019
Special Notes: Livery is a tribute to the Employees Community Fund of Boeing. It celebrates Boeing employees who've contributed to charity ($1 billion to aid local communities) through the organisation. Among the pinks & purples are symbols which represent the charities who've been helped by the Fund. Delivered to Biman Bangladesh Airlines on 22nd December 2019 as reg. S2-AJX.

I keep doing the same thing you did. "Should I, Should I"? It's a beautiful model. Not sure what I am waiting for?

For me, the hesitation was the price & it really isn't part of my collecting criteria. But I decided, "You like the model, so buy it." I knew I'd regret it if I didn't because they'll soon be more difficult to find & more expensive when they come up for sale.

It’s a pretty model, but the pink/purple around the cockpit windows looks like a printing error to me. Mine is the same. I think I will try applying a set of new window decals on top to improve the definition.

Anyone else have the same view, or are some models different?

Are you referring to the colour on the nosecone that extends up to the cockpit windows and slightly above? If so, that's not a misprint. If you look closely, it's on the actual aircraft. The darkly printed cockpit windows doesn't bother me enough to warrant covering it with a decal, but I do wish they had been printed slightly lighter.

Mine has a pink box around the cockpit windows, I don't like it.

My 1/144 PacMin is much nicer

It is supposed to be there. The PacMin is incorrect. It reminds me of Braniff's jellybean livery nose treatment.

Likewise. I had not seen a picture from this angle before. Makes me feel better about it but I still think I will try the modification.

Randy, which airline did you fly the A350 with. Was that also Virgin Atlantic on the A350-1000. I know your posts recently have been on Boeing aircrafts.

Yes, it was Virgin LHR-LAX last August. Virgin lost money on that flight! Hardly anyone on it. I had a FA practically to myself.

Ha! I'm in the same boat. I keep seeing this on eBay and get tempted to buy. Fits in, kind of, with my delivery colors collection. I may have to look around this weekend and see if I want to take the plunge. Nice photos. Congrats

I justified my purchase because it's a 787. I don't intend to collect a lot of 787 models, but I really do like this livery. I'd also like to find the Hogan B787-8 in roll out colours. (Ground config. not in-flight.)

Both the 400 scale and 200 scale were produced by JC Models. Inflight had planned to do them, but scrubbed just prior to production as Boeing caught wind and put a stop to it. JC went ahead with production anyways. There are plenty of of 200 and 400 scale units made by JC and were sent out as white box models but all are in China or Hong Kong. Anyone who buys on ebay can easily get one.

Correct. There are a number of areas on the actual airplane where the colors were mismatched.

Here's another great photo that illustrates paint (purple/pink) v wrap (purple/blue).

Name: IMG-8819.jpg
Views: 351
Size: 150.1 KB

This was more or less by design, and indicated regions that were painted, vs those that were wrapped. These areas were typically those with complex curvature, or areas of significant wind ablation, or in a critical zones or interfaces.

Painted:

Name: Paint.png
Views: 396
Size: 273.7 KB

Keep in mind the objective of this livery was actually to perform Certification testing of large decal (vinyl wrap) application - and show that it didn't increase precipitation static on the airframe, or adversely effect VHF/UHF/HF navigation and communication performance.

Here you go. Cockpit decal was from an old BA 787-8 set that I sourced from the UK years ago. I had Micro-Set here, but no Micro-Sol that I can find, so the decal still is quite visible and will be better when finished. That said, I think it improves the definition of the cockpit and it will be staying on my model.

You know, I agree. I know they're trying to replicate the bronze tint that the flight deck windows have from the outside, but for this model a little more contrast between them and the purple surrounds would help a lot with the definition of the nose.
