Hi all,

I am new to this forum. Hope you're all well. I have a question I'd like to ask - due to a current space issue with displaying my diecast model collection at the moment, I have some of my models in storage (in their original model box) (some have been for nearly a year) in the garage, which can be very cold especially in recent months during the winter. I understand the main thing that can happen with diecast models is "zinc rot" but I am wondering if the cold temperature over a long period of time can lead to any sort of deterioration in the models? E.g. could it cause the metal to become brittle? I hope to soon be able to display my collection but I hope the long term storage in this way hasn't significantly affected them!

P.s: I also am aware that moisture could have an impact but the garage is relatively dry so I don't think that is a problem.

Due to life changes, my models were in 3 different garages and 2 storage sheds. None were climate controlled. After numerous moves and Chicago weather differences, I was able to properly display my models. I was pleased, that besides a few loose bits, they were fine. This took place for about 10 years duration.

Glad that you are good with your models

Cold dry storage is never an issue, no worries, can stay for years
Hot and dry is not too bad either, may result in some loose bits (easily fix with some white glue). Too much light will discolor the boxes printings

The problem you want to avoid is humidity, particularly in hot weather. The first victim will be the cardboxes followed by eventually rot and mold.

Hi, many thanks for both your messages! That's reassuring to know they are ok in cold dry storage. I've been wondering and worrying about it so thanks for reassuring me.

Thanks for letting me know about the issue with humidity, I understand that can be a problem. Hopefully by the time summer comes in a few months I will be able to start displaying them, which would be inside so protected from humidity I think.

I should add that my models were stored in large plastic storage bins. Not totally airtight. No issues with the boxes, either. Chicago does run the gamut of weather, too.
