Post Restoring a Herpa Lufthansa Model Edition B744

Got this gem from a seller in ebay with the purpose of restoring it ,it came with lots of issues :

Broken and missing wingtip
Both stabilisers damaged
yellowed and top antenna missing

I am guessing that this line of models was equal to the Premium line?
The detail is stunning from the radome to the dangling main landing gears

I am posting some pictures of the progress i have made so far, ive managed to disassemble the model glued a new wing tip from an old hogan model, and used hair salon cream to whiten up the fuselage and the wings.
A good comparison of the end result is the last picture with the yellowed stabs.

For the stabilisers i have two options :
a) spare Hogan which need sanding down to fit in the tail slots and painting
b)wait for a normal Herpa LH b744 to arrive by post and use those

Cheers
Bill

Interesting project Bill,

Never took a Herpa model apart and surprised it can be taken apart to its fundamental parts without damaging it any further. Also nice to see what the inside actually looks like, so thanks for sharing the pics.

Looking forward to see the result of your restoration.

what a great project. A long time okay someone here posted pics of a similar project where they tore apart a premium 747 and I believe they installed lights to light up the cabin. Definitely keep us posted..

I have a "body" Herpa Modell Edition 747 too. VERY first one we ever got and first of many of which all have since been sold.

Some good stuff being discussed here, good luck with the restoration. Any plans to airbrush the exterior?

How do you whiten up the model with salon cream? What brand do you use? Would it work with an assembled model? Sounds super interesting for all of us who have yellowed models.

Seems like the Herpa Premium/Modell Edition virus is doing rounds...

Did some youtube search and came up with this guy :
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VU7vXMezW_I

There are many videos in youtube land with people restoring all kind of plastics...

i don't have a uv light source so i went with the sun option+zip lock bag.
Used the pictured salon cream which i bought from a local beauty store (added bonus the strange looks of the ladies working there ,im 46 and bald ).

Did it three times each lasting one hour.It didn't affect the tampo printing yet on an first try with an old yellowed wooster model i noticed that if the cream dries and plastic sticks to the model there are marks left ,so you have to be very cautious.
Also not to forget the missus told me to go for the 40 cream as its stronger

The broken wing tip with the winglet need airbrushing ,i am out of putty though and as the hobby stores are closed due to corona lockdown i have ordered online should take i couple of days for the wing to be finished.

When i bought it i was thinking to completely strip it and go for the Iron Maiden 744 as it doesn't fit my collection criteria ,i collect aircraft that i flew on and special liveries more or less.

When i got it in my hands i was struck with the effort Herpa made ,i had seen pictures of Premiums but never had one up close. So i decided to fix her and keep in the collection.

You can really see the difference between the Modell Edition and the regular Herpa version. Back in the day when I owned Herpa 747 models, I'd replace the landing gear with their retrofit gear. Made a difference.

The yellowing process happens to all HE edition line models. I wasn´t aware about the cleaning process but I am afraid to do it with my LH 727. What I am planning to do is to send it off to a guy that replaces the decals.

Look out with the 727 because the silver belly doesn't handle the bleeching well, I know from my own experience. The 747 is no problem, I did it a few years back and made a topic about it here. But the yellowing does come back over time.
