Default Exorbitant prices on ebay

Just stumbled over this. This seller seriously would like to have 949 Euro (approx. USD1150) for a Gemini200 LH A380. I've seen some exorbitant price but this the top of the iceberg... I've never seen such a cheek.

https://www.ebay.de/itm/324449880896

Btw, this is not a new model.

Cheers.

There are sellers out there that are either greedy and think they will catch some stupid mug with these prices, or have no idea of the value of the model.
It makes me laugh when I see the word 'rare' so many times...until everyone that has one digs it out and puts it on E. Bay!!! Not sure who is most desperate, the seller or the buyer that pays these prices!

Some people still don't understand how auctions work! If they put the starting price at that which they paid for the model, it would be far more attractive to bidders, rather than putting it at what they think it should make. Even putting it slightly lower will start a bidding war, if several people think they might have a bargain. Just putting it at a ridiculously high price is sheer stupidity as it will not attract any bidders and the stubborn seller will just keep listing and relisting with no sale,.

I always get tickled when people hope to cash in on a model sale and start with a crazy high price, and then they won't even offer free shipping. Learned a long time ago these things are not an investment, they are entertainment and I lose money most of the time when selling a model. I typically hope to break even because ultimately I'm going to be investing in another. There have been some surprises over the years. I once sold a copy of a Herpa SWA Shamu for $235 (I think that's what I remember). There have been a number of times I attempted to sell something for more than I paid, or even at original price and had no bidders, only to relist the model at well below market to see it get many bids and eventually surpass its original price. People like playing the Auction Game.

I started collecting in September 2020 and have a fairly large collection already. Ebay has been one place i have purchased from but even my untrained eye is surprised by some listings.

Has anyone seen the Southwest 737 on ebay for $500, with two very noticeable chips on the rear roof.

Is that model that rare that even damaged it can pull such a large valuation?

I ask as its one i would like as i have flown in one but i wouldn't touch that with such damage.

Like some people said, people just looking for suckers most likely.

There's one of the limited release United large-titled B747SPs I want on there right now. He's asking 555. And if you look it appears both RF antennas on the wingtips are bent.

And to top if off he's charging 49.99 for USPS Priority Mail shipping.

Stupid. However, you can chose between starting bid EUR 649 and BuyNow EUR 949. Good options. :-D

Apart from that stupidity, here's an even more dramatic stupidity: if that seller finds someone buying the model for one or the other exaggerated price, the model has that value... for the moment. Ridiculous but true.

Bottom line: don't care and move on.

The model in the link above is even damaged because of packiging and stand (have a closer look on that blurry pictured left horizontal stabilizer). I had exactly the same thoughts as you guys when I first saw it. A model I really wanna get is the Gemini200 Lufthansa 747-8I in their 1990s colors. It was sold for almost 500EUR/ 600USD on ebay in December '20. No thanks. Not willing to pay these prices and looking for an honest bidding offer instead.

And as we see with Gemini's Concorde release this year, sometimes you just have to patient to get your new highly wanted diecast airliner for a more than reasonable price (pre-ordered mine via ACB for 90EUR/ 110USD). So Gemini, please go for another LH 747-8 and A380 in 1990s colors.

Thank you. Someone else who sees it too. There was a Gemini Delta 767 that went for like $1300 a week or two ago. The starting bid was a normal bid. That guy is on Facebook and he said the buyer paid and was happy. I say good for him to get $1300. If you can get it then you can get it! But then I did immediately laugh at everyone who put a buy it now at $1300. I guess not everyone else can see the difference but oh well.

I think it was $3500 which was astonishing. I bought that model for $67 and I was tempted to list it after seeing that as well, but #1, it's a "flown on" example for me and #2, my stepdad was a Delta 767 captain, so it's worth much more for me as part of my collection - the money can't really replace that.

Want to see more expensive models? Check the 1:400 Delta CRJ-900, which can sell for excessively high prices too (record has been around $1,600 from a few months ago). So many people have been demanding Gemini Jets to do another release of this model because of it.

Some of these prices on eBay have gotten out of hand, there are many that are out there I would love to have, but there is no way I’m going to pay some of these prices for a model.

Sometimes I get snarky with sellers of overpriced, 'rare' models, and 'contact the seller' with a verbal jab just to irritate 'em, and I often get rewarded with a ban by that seller. I consider that a compliment, Doug

And it's not a harmless practice either, as sellers that would normally stick to a reasonable price but check for similar listings first to get an idea about value, now believe that they have a lump of gold in their hands.

Just want to add my two cents here.

Yes I managed to get some insane prices for some of my auctions, but as always I let the buyer set the price. I will start my auctions at 0.99p so everyone has a chance unless someone offers me a price then I will re-list it for them to buy (in one instance). I agree there are extremely greedy sellers out there listing at unrealistic prices but equal blame is on the collectors who push up these prices.

I will say though I don’t appreciate being name dropped in this thread, please don’t make me out to be the bad guy.

I'll stick to my 1:400 version. Fifty three bids starting out at .99. That to me says it is rare and sought after.

as exorbitant as some of these prices are, i don't have a problem as long as its open bid since then the price is determined by the collectors. sometimes a collector really really like something and really wants it. I myself have put on some high (but not crazy) bids.

I would rather have an open bid to allow collectors to all have a chance to get something rare rather than just have a really low set price and just whoever happen to see the listing to just buy it first.

Not sure if someone else sold one at that price, but I sold the GJ200 Delta 763W in the current livery for $3500. I started the auction at $49.99. I didn’t expect it to ever get that much. I thought maybe it might go for $125 tops. The guy paid right away and he’s happy with it. I’ve never tried to gouge my buyers, every auction I’ve done has had a very low starting price. I don’t know what people are thinking, I guess it’s a get rich scheme for them. When my auction for the $3500 DL 763 was still active, someone else put up the same model as “Buy It Now” for $3000 and it sold in one day.

I sold a model in an auction in December for $67, a GJ200 JetBlue A320, and the buyer still hasn’t paid for it. I think I’ll put up for sale again, I’ve given him over 7 weeks to pay.

I have some models that will fetch a nice sum, but the sentimental value I have for them means that I’ll never part with them, like the GJ200 Air France Concorde.

You should definitely open a case soon - I think Ebay only gives you a limited time to get your final value fees back. I say in my auctions that payment is expected within 5 days, and unless they message me saying they're bidding on another item to combine, I'm pretty quick to open the case after that 5 days.

What’s really weird is that the winning bidder has over 2,000 in positive feedback. I gave him the benefit of the doubt, and then sent him a message at the end of December asking him if he still wanted it. He wrote back that he’d pay in a couple days, and then never did.

I’ve sold a lot in the past couple months, so now I can contact the eBay Concierge Service and they’re really nice. I’ll ask them what they think. I just want to get rid of the model. It’s been packed to ship since before the auction ended.

Glad I did stock up on the 737-100 as well as the a320-100. These models of the real life low volume planes almost always has good chance of being up priced later. also see the a318 and a330-800 and 777-8.

This guy falsely accused me of shill biddings and unlawful bidding practices on his Facebook group page without any proof. I decided to leave that group because all he does is resell models I sold him in the past. He buys models from other collectors to sell them again. He does not care about the hobby. I even got insults through e bay messaging because I refused to answer his request of selling him models. He buys and buys models other collectors sell at fair prices and then puts them on auctions. To me it's strange how same models he has on auctions sell on e bay at cheaper prices. Just compare the prices with the sold items and his listings. Makes NO sense. BTW his moniker is vintagehangar and entered this forum because was looking for a Lufthansa A340-600 and sold it not too long ago.

What is the FB group you're referring to?

I forgot about his ATA B722 25th Anniversary that was ending yesterday. Only went for 67 bucks, I would've bid a bit higher had I known it'd go for that low.

A couple GJ200 Lufthansa 748s sold on auction this past Monday for hefty prices as well. Not too surprised, but the stark realization is starting to set in that these models are hitting grail status. Gotta get what you want when they release, so that the secondary market can be avoided!

Now I know who you're talking about. Makes sense now. I've seen some of his models on ebay with asinine BIN prices. Definitely in it for the money like you said.

Although I'm surprised his Saul Bass United B752 isn't at a high bidding price yet. Maybe Inflight's impending release has lessened the value a bit.

Exactly. There was a Delta 757 colors on motion livery for over 1500$us in his listings. Are you serious? Not even the AA 757 or SW 737 mustard rocket got to that price and they were more popular.

I've said it before but I don't really care about shill bidding. What I mean by that is that I don't think it happens nearly as often as people think it does and you have to actually participate yourself in order to be a victim of it.

I'm not going to put in some high bid of $1500. I'm usually going to wait until the last 10 seconds and then put in the actual highest amount I'm willing to pay. If I put in a high bid of $300 and it sells for $300 then I got it for an amount I was still willing to pay for.

Now, let's say for example that the seller placed a shill bid up to $275 and the real, genuine highest bid below mine was $200. Would I be upset if I found out? Sure and if I had proof of it then I would contact eBay.

But what I wouldn't do is say I just absolutely want to have this model and put in some bid that was way higher than what I actually want to pay. If you put in a bid for $1600 and won with that bid but only wanted to pay $300 then you can go straight to your nearest mirror to identify exactly who is ultimately responsible for that screw up.

Wow that's wild. I had always known these were sought after, but I was lucky enough to get the Retro model on consignment at a shop for CAD 220 in 2018, and sold it as I've been exiting the hobby not long ago for CAD 250. Granted this model had very minor defects. Whoever paid over 900 is silly though, you can still get them on eBay for <400 if you wait for the right seller as I've watched them for a while - it was probably just a "heat of the moment" kinda thing.

Agreed. I posted about that earlier in this thread about it. I'm a huge Colors In Motion fan, but that's about 5-6 times higher than I've ever seen any model in that livery go for. Not saying it's a shill bid, but.......

I want to first apologise for bringing up this older thread. I've been trying to acquire (and reacquire) a few older models and it seems like it's an uphill battle. Today, I bid on a GJ Piedmont B722. I once worked for Piedmont, so having the model would hold a lot of sentimental value for me. I loved working for them. I initially bid what I thought would be a reasonable amount, but I kept getting outbid at the last moment. My final bid was GBP 231.00 (I'm not ashamed to admit) and I was still outbid. It ended at GBP 236.00. There's a United Saul Bass 727 on eBay now, as well as an Eastern 727 and I'm not even going to bother bidding. I'm having problems finding even models that were released a year ago for a decent price. (The GJ TWA B722 and the GJ Pan Am B741.) These prices are so off-putting and so disheartening.

GJ/JCW please take note of the market trends and release more of these classic 727s. Collectors are hungry/starving for them. At this rate, I doubt I'll ever own another model of one.

the rumor is that the models are going to cost more from the next month or middle of this month as shipping expenses have gone up by a large amount.

Yes, there's a Herpa 747 model I'm interested in that's located in Canada. Older release. Cost of shipping is 1/3 the cost of the model.

BTW, I'm not complaining. It's just very disheartening.

You could add on your sale that 0 feedback buyers or bidders will be ignored and that a minimal of 10 feedback points with 100% is required?

Unless this is breaking ebay rules & regulations?
Just wondering though, it's ages ago that I sold something on ebay.

Overall the feedback system of ebay is pretty flawed, Sellers like buyers should be able to give positive, neutral & negative feedback and not only the buyers, it should be even on both sides imo.

There’s always a moron willing to pay these prices, or else they wouldn’t be getting posted at these prices in the first place. It’s always nice to have a fake second eBay account and bid on these models and not pay. It’s fun times.

There was a JetBlue “Blue Print” that sold for $2300 yesterday. If you go and look at the bid history, one bid was retracted at $9,999 and then there were 3 or so legitimate high bids in the hundreds. He started the auction at $250. This is a model I’ve been following because I have it but not exactly attached to it. I wasn’t going to sell it for $200 but lately it keeps going up. I listed last night after the first auction ended with a starting bid of $299 or you could send an offer. I got an offer for $400 and accepted it.

This is a situation where I fully believe people just put in a ridiculous bid because they really want it but don’t expect someone else to also use the same tactic. At the end, they’re not going to pay and it hurts the seller. I have now sold mine to one of the legitimate buyers thus reducing his potential pool when he inevitably has to relist.

I was in touch with the seller of that model and you would never believe this but it was being bid on by the same person who tried to scam me and two other member here selling that exact same plane. He has also tried it with several Gemini dealers. It was the reason I started the thread and posted his name as an alert to block him. I also contacted the Cleveland Police dept and they now have a case number. The guy has a real problem and his method of operation is exactly the same every time. It seems he is fascinated with the JetBlue blueprint plane.
Here is the thread:

It seems it is not unique to diecast model, the pandemic might have something to do with it, looking at that article from the NYT:

https://www.nytimes.com/2021/03/20/s...sultPosition=4

(I have a subscription, but I think most should be able to read it as NYT allows you to read a few articles before they ask for your CC details)

Ok, we are not dealing with Porsche 911, but this is just a milder version. Some people are suffering, a few benefit, and a lot are bored, at home with an Internet connection... This is not stimulus money, but the opposite.
