Default Shipping is a Mess (Don't order from China atm!!)

Would not recommend buying any models from China atm... Ordered a few models from a mate in HK (Rep for JC), ANA 772 Tokyo 2020 model shipped 8th December, now 1st Jan still no sign of it entering UK Customs along with Gemini Lufthansa MD11F also shipped on 18th December which hasn't reached UK shores yet, but thats to be expected.

Granted that Xmas/New Year, UK/EU Border Closures, COVID etc etc is currently going on but the current state of shipping is a mess. Believe that HK has also decided to halt all mail outbound to the UK which sucks (Not sure on courier services). The service I took usually takes around 2 weeks from posted to arrival, at the minute we're closer to 4 weeks and the damn thing hasn't even got to the UK yet....

First world problems I know, but just a heads up, if you are desperate for something it's going to take a while so maybe go to a retailer if time is an issue. it'll cost more but at least you're likely to get it before 2025...

hope this can help a couple of you guys out there

Shipping is not a mess; it works fine from China to Canada or EU.

The UK is a mess.

Never understood why Time would be an issue? It’s just a model of a plane. Seriously with what’s going on out there in the world this is not an issue. Count yourself lucky if this is your issue in life. My family has endured and lost so much over 2020 so waiting for a model a bit longer than usual is insignificant.

I've ordered a model from the UK about a week ago; hoping it would have arrived by now (to EU)...but it hasn't. In fact it hasn't even been shipped yet.

From what I understand the EU has temporarily accepted the UK trade deal for now; and if I'm not mistaken that means that no import fees are due. However something that I did not think about was value added tax. What's the consensus here; will we in EU be charged processing fees and VAT taxes when receiving items from the UK now?

this from transglobal website who I use to book packages to anywhere outside UK.

Until now, customs clearance has not been required when shipping goods between the UK and EU countries.

From 1st January 2021, however, a customs declaration will be required when sending goods from the UK to the EU, and vice versa.

So when you book your parcel delivery with us, there will be an extra step: you will need to fill out a packing list / customs invoice, detailing the itemised contents of your shipment, with the appropriate tariff codes for each.

my wife who is head postmistress at local PO, says they have started posting again. but there are 'significant' delays/backlog. but there is a hold from EU to UK.

EDIT.

Shipments sent between the UK and the EU will also be subject to customs duties and taxes, for which the receiver is liable to pay. When sending to the EU, goods valued above €22 will be subject to VAT. Goods valued more than €150 will be subject to customs duties.

Also found this on their site. not good news.

The UK Global Tariff will apply to all imported goods from 1st January 2021, replacing the Common External Tariff of the EU customs union.
You can use the government's look-up tool to compare new and old tariffs for each category of goods.
When sending to the EU from a country outside of the EU, VAT is not due if your goods are valued below a certain threshold—between €10-22, depending on the country. If the value of the goods exceeds €22, VAT is payable at the rate of the destination country. For more information, please refer to the European Commission website.
As per the new trade deal, duties will not be payable if goods originate in the UK. However, if goods are imported to the EU via the UK from another non-EU country (e.g. China->UK->EU), duties will be payable.
When importing to the UK, goods valued up to £135 will be exempted from import duties and import VAT. Instead, VAT will be applied at the point of sale. However, customs procedures will still apply and documentation is still required. For gifts, the threshold remains £39. For more information, please refer to the UK government website.
For taxes and duties for goods above these thresholds, you should notify the receiver as they may be required to pay.
You have the option to make your goods Delivered Taxes Paid (DTP)—which means all duties are charged to the account holder, rather than the receiver.

uk customs class models as 'TOYS' for vat + import charges.

Shipping is a mess. Not just in the UK, but in the USA as well.

I’ve been selling part of my collection on eBay and the US Postal Service is having a hard time during the holiday season. I’ve sent out models and some buyers get them right away, others have been waiting for 2 1/2 weeks. It’s stressful because some of the buyers are coming after me about it, filing claims on eBay, but it’s out of my control.

The alert I’ve seen in the tracking of packages says that they’re having employee shortages due to Covid-19. I can imagine if a worker gets sick and comes down with it in a distribution center, all pandemonium breaks loose.

I have refused to open my auctions to buyers overseas because of the delays, and still, one buyer bid on something anyway. He became ballistic and started threatening me to the point that I had to get eBay involved.

Additionally, I won’t buy anything from overseas myself. There are so few flights operating internationally, that to me it’s not worth it yet. Hopefully things will get better.

For US collectors this topic has been discussed and worn out over the last year.. bottom line is if you’re in the United States avoid the USPS at all costs.. They have tens of thousands of packages that were mailed out the first week of December in time for Christmas and they are all still sitting in USPS store rooms around the country backlogged .. definitely use Fedex ground or UPS ground to ship internally in the United States.. I have had no problems with overseas packages coming or going DHL and FedEx Air..having received and sent quite a few to and from Europe, Japan, Malaysia and China all in the month of December with zero issues..

I've experienced Canada Post delays as well. Even shipments sent before Christmas and after. The Rush during these times with COVID and christmas/new year is causing big delays but something I don't mind. Hopefully, no one loses packages during this time!

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to all. I hope everyone has a safe and happy 2021!

Np problems for me with Canada Post. Touch wood. The planet has been such a mess in 2020, potential shipping delays don't concern me.

Ontario has been a massive mess since the whole province went into lockdown... Any priority options are being given the same estimates as the cheapest regular option to ship something an hour away from my house.

Yes, agree...
My wife ordered a few models from China and all of them arrived in Melbourne within 12 calendar days...

The problem is UK. An email from an UK retailer, mentioned orders are going to be significantly delayed due to CO-19.

I think the title of this thread should be
“Don’t order from UK atm”...

I concur, view the current situation and period of the year I think they are doing pretty well.

I am getting packages from about everywhere with few delays. And anyway, patience is a virtue

Last time I purchased a model from an eBay seller in China was on August 3rd and the seller informed me AFTER I made the purchase that shipping by air was unavailable at the time and it would ship by sea. He did provide a tracking number and it absolutely showed no progress until it reached U.S. customs in November. I did receive the model in late November, and the ability to provide a gripe feedback about the surprise shipping method after the purchase was no longer available. I won't be purchasing from that seller again.

Do we have an overview of ebay sellers that we collectively have dealt with? Would it be worth making a community thread to share our experiences with various sellers? Might save someone some heartache in the future.

Dunno, this may not be by the board rules though, not sure.

I am not far away from Manchester and my models are still coming from China as normal (about 10-12 days for each model). I think you should check with your sender (if you only see "shipping label prepared" but nothing else)!

USA is a mess too. Fedex and ups dumped their non-priority packages onto USPS during the Xmas rush, which caused an insane backup of mail. Still waiting on stuff that was sent early November and it was only being shipped from across the country. Also waiting for my car registration which was supposed to arrive mid November.

I'm a little worried about my order from UK (to EU). From what I read only packages posted before the end of the year will be exempt from customs/duties. However I ordered at Christmas (thus paid VAT), but it hasn't been shipped yet due to holidays - meaning that I'll likely will have to pay VAT again when it passes EU customs. Thats an extra 15 euro + 23% of the full order+shipping amount

I am afraid that would be the case for you. I ordered 4 1:100 models from Aviationmegastore's Xmas sales just before Xmas. However, due to the border closure they could not ship the order until tomorrow. I eventually had to cancel it. Don't want to pay the ~25% custom charges extra now. Anyway, in my case Aviationmegastore told me that they would deduct the VAT they charged me (~20$) if I stick to the order and save it as store credit for my next purchase. So if you ordered your models from some shops in the UK, you should ask them about that as well.

I am in UK and have ordered models from EU countries during December, before the UK left the EU, but neither have arrived yet show posted in December . Will these still be exempt from import tax, or will the tax be applied as they will (hopefully) arrive this month now we have left the EU?

This was the message I received from Aviationmegastore in the Netherlands on New Year Eve:

"UPS confirms resumption of standard deliveries to UK and Ireland as of Monday January 4th.

This means that your order xxxxxx will be delivered after Brexit date and you should be prepared to pay to UPS for import duties and taxes, as well as import handling. These costs are the result of Britain leaving the European Union on January 1st and they are beyond our control.

Current orders have included Dutch VAT. All will be recalculated and Dutch VAT amount will be deducted and will be credited to your account with us as a store credit that can be used for payment of future purchases."

On the other way I ordered from a shop in the UK but they cancelled my order due to the actual chaos.

Therefore ordering from the UK is a part of history for me now...

Anyway, in my case Aviationmegastore told me that they would deduct the VAT they charged me (~20$) if I stick to the order and save it as store credit for my next purchase. So if you ordered your models from some shops in the UK, you should ask them about that as well.
Thanks for the example. Makes sense. I actually ordered from an eBay seller (buygoneworld) that seems to be a business (thus should be paying VAT on its sales) but so far they haven't replied to my email on this subject. I did ask them to basically apply the same trick to my order as AviationMegastore did for you.

Its not the end of the world as its not a huge amount of money, but still, it easily takes up the cost of the model up 50% and that'd be a pity.

While searching these new rules I did come across this article:
https://www.globalvatcompliance.com/...f-1-july-2021/

This says that from July 1st the EU will do away with the 22 euro 'VAT/fees applied' rules, and allow VAT-free imports up to 150 euro from outside of the EU as long as the seller has pre-registered the purchase on a (to be developed) platform. Unclear who will have access to that platform but if UK companies would be able to access this - then purchases under 150 euro should be VAT-free from UK sellers.

At the same time, this means that we will no longer be able to import cheap stuff from sites like aliexpress. Those sellers likely won't be working with the EU platform to register each purchase, meaning that even a $1 usb charge cable from China will then carry a 23% VAT and 15 euro processing fee...

now this is strange. just checked aviation megastore whom I have bought before. they have always listed models at a price. with a second price incl. 19% vat. on checkout you get charged higher price. and then postage is added. and no charges when it arrives.

so just did test purchase on a model.

Airbus A320neo Juneyao Air B-30FQ With Stand (Aviation 200 AV2029)
€ 0.00
€ 73.51
: incl. tax € 88.95
Save 6.3%

but when I went to checkout, the vat was removed!

1 Airbus A320neo Juneyao Air B-30FQ With Stand AV2029 AV2029 € 73.51 € 0.00 € 73.51
Sub total: € 73.51

Ship to address via UPS
€ 14.60

NL VAT 21,0%: € 0.00

Total: € 88.11

so presume I will have to pay 20% vat when it lands in u.k. is that 20% of total 88.11 euros, or price of actual model. 73.51 euros? and will there be import charges too? shouldn't be if limit is 135 euros.

Thumbs up Re: Shipping is a Mess (Don't order from China atm

It is whatever UPS will think they are entitled to charge you. Not really transparent, at least in Canada. Not sure either anybody has yet a clear vision of what the actual cost will be under the post Brexit trade agreement.

In the other direction, (UK to EU), my understanding is that the final import fee may actually depend upon the origin of the good. For Uk goods, free of fees. Fees will however apply for third countries goods, such as China, imported via the UK. Good luck with for instance ARD, they already struggle with the current, simpler rules.

In Germany (so, in the EU) import duty fees are applied on goods + shipping.

Just checking my watch list on ebay. seller below is in Europe. bought a couple of ready built kit models in the past. no problems. NOW all his listings will have 20% vat added to price. looks like ebay will be collecting the vat at point of sale. like they do for some sales to usa etc. so you can't ask seller to put low value on customs charge to try and avoid them.

I won't, because this is a hobby forum and therefore not the appropriate place to enter into depressing societal topics. If you really wish more details, just open any non Murdoch owned media.

I was simply pointing out to the OP the issue is likely to be at the receiving end of the journey rather at its beginning.

Good to know that I’m not alone. Had I known I would have used a different shipping service.

I wonder why they would make such a decision to take on packages from FedEx and UPS during the busiest shipping season of the year. I read that somewhere else, it may have been in another thread.

There’s no rhyme or reason as to how packages are being delivered. I shipped some boxes out on the same day at the same time, and some were delivered right away, others are still “in transit.”

Well I'm pleased to say one parcel has just arrived today (January 4th)from Poland posted on 17th December with no additional charges, which makes sense. Anyone in UK making purchases from sellers during December should not have any additional customs/handling charges added as the price you paid the seller including postage is a binding contract. Delaying mail by any postal service until after January 1st just to cash in on the additional charges caused by Brexit is fraud and sharp practice. If anyone experiences this, they should refuse to pay!

Does anyone here have any experiences with eBay seller buygoneworldlimited? They are a UK seller with a huge number of positive eBay reviews. I've emailed them in the past with a question on the availability of a specific model and they were very fast to reply.

I've ordered from them just after Christmas for delivery in the EU. Tracked shipment was the selected option. However when it looked like they would not ship before Brexit I've send them an email to discuss Brexit options wrt shipping/taxes. No reply. A few days later a notification from eBay that it was shipped - but no tracking number included/provided. Sent them a message asking if they received my email and to send the tracking number. Fast reply on ebay but a very generic one: No they didnt get my email, due to covid things aren't running smooth and Brexit is something they still have to look into. Note that this was after Jan 1st! Thinking that I'll sort out the whole Brexit/taxes thing afterwards I replied to provide the tracking number..no reply. Couple days later I've sent a reminder.. nothing.

I'm a little baffled. These guys have an unreal eBay feedback score (99,9% with 13K+ reviews) but they seem unprepared for Brexit and do not reply to customer messages. Three weeks have gone since the order and haven't gotten any details from them whatsoever.

Obviously Brexit is a mess and I do understand that this would be difficult for sellers like them - but ignoring your customers on basic questions.. not good. Wondering if there is anything I can do at this point. Don't really want a refund as the model on order is quite rare.. but if they won't send the tracking number it will be very difficult for me to receive the package as typically the post office doesn't notify of packages waiting to be picked up - so after a while they will just be returned to sender. Or get 'lost' along the way.

Ebay started to do this with overseas shipments in 2020, I think. Don’t know why, this was normally up to the parcel service and Customs (in Germany, a shipmenti is normally processed in the destination country‘s international postal centers on behalf of Customs; if the shipment was to be processed through Customs, it was transported to a local Customs office close to the recipient‘s location for pick-up - and payment).

That being said: AMS is listing net retail price (without taxes) for international customers and gross price incl. taxes for The Netherlands. If you order from a EU country, national Customs won’t check the package at all. Now that Great Britain decided to leave the EU, things have changed... I assume.

Had several models ordered through Bygoneworld and had no issues. They were using a courier company ,DPD, and it would take not more than a week for the parcel to be delivered to Greece.
Yet my last order went in 1 day before the issues with the trucks at Dover etc although initially i was supposed to get it by courier they have switched to Royal mail as no couriers were able to send their stuff out of the UK.
Instead of the usual 7 days transit now im counting something like 22 days in transit...
My best advise is have patience especially if you order from the UK.

Thanks! I'm also in Greece so would expect to see similar shipping times. Even though another model that I ordered recently from Thailand (of all places) managed to arrive at Γ.Ε.Τ.Α. within 3 days - a new record - and also using the same cheap registered airmail. But I guess that with Brexit this cannot really be compared.

Honestly I don't mind too much that it takes long... but I do mind not having the tracking code. It was indeed sent with Royal Mail Tracked and I'm sure that you are familiar with how Elta handles the delivery outside of the main cities - it's quite unreliable and more than once I have found boxes delivered to common areas without letting us know - allowing neighbors to have a go at it. Chances of taking receipt are slim if I have no clue when something is due to be delivered.
