Default Whats going on with insane Ebay “buy now” pricing

Hi there! Hope everyone is well. Im new to the forum, and wasn't sure where to post this. Ive been collecting Gemini Jets 400 for a long time, and have a nice collection built up. Only in the last 3 years have i been collecting Gemini 200. Now to my question;

Am i missing something about the value of Gemini Jets 200 aircraft on eBay? Im seeing some insane “buy it now” asking prices for quite a few of these planes including some released early this year. Im talking double to quadruple or more times the Gemini Retail price. Some have the make an offer option and I've made what i feel are fair market value offers and been rejected only to see them expire and repost for weeks on end.

Did i miss a strong market movement for the value of these planes? I bought a few planes in April and they were selling at half the price and asking at half the price. Is it Christmas fever?

Ive seen a Qatar A380 Australian seller asking 700 USD for a plane, and several other planes asking 999 USD. Im pretty sure zero Gemini jets are worth that money. My first instinct is that these sellers don't really want to sell so they put up an insane price and if some schmuck pays it then they will sell, if not they keep it. But it seems like a lot of small sellers are buying up large quantities of planes and reselling and terrible prices.

I apologize if this is a stupid question. I typically buy from the GeminiJets Authorized retailers list and even with mark up they are usually fair

Thanks in advance for any info. Happy Holidays !

Some are just opportunistic. Best just to move on.

eBay itself is ridiculous now that they want to charge sales tax on everything, including international purchases. Totally worth looking elsewhere.

Hi Bpurtle, welcome to the forum. I think you are seeing some opportunistic folks thinking because there have been several high-profile sales of a few really rare models recently, that they are trying to mark up even more to see if they can capture some of that. But the Qatar A380 you mention is really rare to get hold of these days, as is an AA polished 757, or a Southwest Mustard 737-700. All of those have been going for $400-800 regularly when they appear. But most GJ200's that are out of stock at retailers still only command a small premium on their prices on the secondhand market.

I like how the one Ebay seller from Japan will list a plane at something like $49.95 and then shipping is like $249.95! WTF! That seller is all over the map, then will list something for $699.95 and shipping at 49.95.

Denny, a G200 Qatar A380 just went the other day on Ebay from a REASONABLE seller in the US for $230 with free shipping! Far and few between for this model, but it does happen on occasion.

Was going to pull the trigger and flip it as it was a great price, but figured I'd let a collector wanting it get it, but then again, it may get listed by the buyer for $800 once they receive it!

Isn't this against eBay policy re: excessive shipping cost?

I don’t think eBay actually cares anymore because they’ve eliminated the only reason that would make them care...fees. Final value fees are assessed on everything now, including shipping fees so even sellers who charge actual costs lose money on shipping too.

I recommend you folks check out the 1:400 Delta CRJ-900 if you haven’t yet. Recently, a few listings have been popping up on eBay with ridiculously outrageous final prices. The first one sold for $1,000, and another $1,600. As of now, we have two active listings, one for $1,025 and another for a more modest $405.

And the reserve on the $405 model hasn't yet been met! That's insane. And here I am vacillating on whether to spend $90 on an AV400 model. But it's a model of an aircraft I've flown on.

I'm trying to be pre-emptive about acquiring some aircraft that I might have a chance to fly on in the future, so as to lock in decent prices, and had I considered a Qatar A380 one of those options, I might have gone for that one at $230. But I would put Qatar at the bottom of the list of carriers I intend to book on because transferring through Doha holds very little attraction for me. I'm sure I can get a similar airfare on Emirates or Etihad if need be.

But I can also get a custom done for max $300-350 if I really feel I need something in particular - so I don't understand the willingness to pay double and triple that. $1000+ for a 1:400 CRJ is madness. Whoever is paying those prices better hope that GJ doesn't release another one

It's not just EBay - take a look at some of the independent sellers on Amazon. Some of them are jacking up prices of everything in the belief that people will actually pay. And yes - sometimes they pull bait-n-switch too. The price of the goods are low - the shipping is really high. This kind of stuff happens all over - not just on EBay - not just with diecasts. Just wait for K A R M A to strike .. :-)

Wow. Thanks for all the great answers. Didn't know some super rare ones are actually selling for so much. I must say i am guilty of feeding the price gouging 🙁. As of lately I'm almost addicting to building up my collection and spending way more over fair value to get what i want. Unfortunately most of what i need aren't being sold in any retailers. For example, the Reno Air MD-87. Now this might truly be super rare, and i may pay a high price for it. Almost no one who owns it ever seem to sell them. Actually, most of the MD-80s seem to be be double or triple, retail and very few found in stock at retailers.

Anywho, thanks for the insights... guess ill just have to try and use some restraint😖.

All I want is a Hobby master 1/200 VC-54 HL2006 and i couldnt find one person willing to offer one for sale yet. ;( This thing is definitely rarer than any concorde or Qatar A380.

Anyone has one ?

This forum should almost have a humor section for crazy eBay prices. Just search for a plane and then change the sort Price - highest first.

I certainly love this HELPER WINGS

Yes, eBay is a disaster. Now sales tax? Gimme a break. Not gonna happen.

Sadly, it appears as if they have a monopoly, so you either bite the bullet and make the purchase on release, or hope someone in the used section here is off-loading it later. Slim choices, and hard decisions—especially for someone like me who muses over these things till they're almost sold out.

eBay cost of doing business: 14% off the top. You may want to buy their stock to offset their costs. Bummer, but where else will you get that market? They got ya by the stones, Doug

well I only sell on ebay when they a £1 only final value fee!! incl post!! I get them regular. still have to pay paypal fees. but its minimal. if I sell 20 items for £800 I ony pay £20. not £80. plus no fees on postage. I have 2 model on there atm. combined value around £300. I will only pay £2 plus paypal fee.

I just sold a bunch of Gemini Jets 1:200 and Inflight 200 models on eBay and I never do a “Buy It Now” type of sale, I do auctions. I list my models at low starting bids and then let the buyers determine what they want to pay.

I’m just happy to get rid of them, I have way too many and I’m going to move from NYC to Dallas, hopefully early next year. It’s not worth moving so many models to Texas.

If someone gets a bargain with some of the models I sell, I’m cool with it and glad for the buyer. If someone wants to go crazy and bid some outrageous amount but they’re willing to pay that much, I’m okay with that, too. I sold a Gemini 200 Delta 727-200 Widget last month and someone bought it for $910. I never imagined in my wildest dreams that it would go for that much! I had a spare Gemini 200 AA 777-200 in the delivery colors polished metal that went for $475, and a Delta L-1011 in the standard Widget livery that went for $435. I guess some people really value the hard-to-find ones.

If I passed on a release when it was new, that's on me. I may snoop on eBay, to see what the after market is asking for it? A couple of Hogan 747 models I wish I had purchased. Laugh until my stomach hurts, if the seller thinks I will pay $500 USD for a Hogan 747. I will sleep just fine, if it is missing from my collection.

Those sellers with high shipping costs do that because they they don’t pay eBay fees on shipping. A way to circumvent eBay fees.

It doesn't work like that anymore. Ebay fee is now assessed on total cost paid by buyers including the shipping.

And yes, some models do get really high price. I had to pay $350 for a gemini BA concorde and $250 for MAS 9M-MRO. Those are my two most costly models.... I wish i didn't have to pay higher but it is what it is sometimes. And I have a few good bargains before.

Generally things are a lot cheaper a few years ago compared to now.

I saw that CRJ and it blew my mind, and it still does. I could never justify spending that kind of money for that.

I think I got lucky finding a American Reno Air 737 for $60 the other day. Unless I'm mistaken, thats a steal.

So if I look elsewhere, ignoring eBay and their "monopoly" and fee structure, where do you all suggest I look to sell or find the best selection of the planes we love?

In the item description, he writes number 2 that was ever made. Key words in the title of the listing: "only existing 1." How does he know there are no others existing? This site's database shows there were 300 models produced in 2007 and there are photos of it in the database. Some people...

I wouldn’t ignore eBay. I’ve got some great deals on ebay from fellow collectors or model stores or even estate companies. I’ve way overpaid too on rare models I really wanted but that was my choice. I have bought 6-7 really rare models on eBay in the last few days even that asking prices weren’t all that nuts. A bit high but whatever. With Covid killing 2 years worth of vacations I can spend my vacation money....

I agree. I’ve found a lot on eBay. And yes, they can be overpriced, but they’re ones I really want, so I’m willing to pay. In the end, those are well worth the money. The Phoenix Cubana Il-96 was high, but worth it.

I ended up working more this year due to not having anywhere to go. So yeah, i have splurged on several expensive models on ebay. Good thing nothing above $350 so far for one model. but a lot of the smaller purchases actually add up anyway.

I am pretty sure I saw one go for over $1000 Canadian earlier this year, whatever that is in the Queens currency.

I paid near that for mine in a heated eBay auction earlier this year but mine was dead mint, this one apparently has a paint defect. Crazy prices but it is what it is, not like you can go to the store and buy one and for impatient people like me who wanted one I just say, well, thanks to Covid a 4 day weekend at the JW Marriott in Phoenix is off the table for 24 months lol

Regarding the 737-800 I have the G2AAL769 which is good enough for me, I will let the G2AAL015 go this time lol.

There are some crazy bids going on. I’m selling a Gemini 200 Delta 763 with winglets and the revised livery with the Widget and Delta titles on the bottom of the fuselage and I can’t get over how much people are willing to pay. I think I started the auction at $49.99 and thought I’d get like $125 for it. It’s up to $3500.

That could make for a very Merry Christmas!

(No I am not bidding lol, I haven't even seen the auction and that is above what I would pay anyway )

I have never paid more than around $175 or so for a model myself. I think the most expensive model I ever bought was a preorder for the Inflight 200 American DC-10-30 second release, but first release of it in polished metal.

I can’t imagine paying that much for one, that’s like 3 months of mortgage payments or rent. There are two bidders who were fighting bitterly over it. Is the Delta 763 that rare?

I'm happy to be proven wrong, but I suspect that you are a victim of someone who may also have one of these for sale trying to ensure that theirs sells for an inflated price instead. I've had it happen to me, with a couple of bidders pushing an item well above what it's worth, and then not paying - essentially wasting the listing. If these bidders have more than single-digit feedback, then maybe they're real, but in my experience if bids are going well beyond what you expected then it's a red flag. Please do let us know if the transaction succeeds though.

No, the winning bidder has over 500+ positive feedback and bought from me before. The other bidder has around 36 positive feedback.

You gonna at least upgrade his shipping to 2 day free of charge?

On a more serious note, if any of you guys want a model of mine that I have previously said wasn’t for sale - $3,500 will get it and I’ll even ship it UPS Next Day Air for free because I like to consider myself a pretty reasonable guy.

I hope you get it. At the end of the day, I think what actually happens with these bids is that they come from two guys who both have the same idea where they really want it and don’t want to get outbid by $5. So they put in some ridiculous, high amount and that generally works until there is another guy who does the same thing.

Last time around this buyer paid $910 for my GJ 200 Delta 727-200. Paid right away and never complained. I always take extra care in packing so that the model arrives safely.

I wouldn’t have sold so many if I wasn’t moving, although my massive collection was getting out of hand. I’ll be glad when my sales are all over. Some buyers can be very difficult. I’ve even had to get eBay involved and have had buyers blocked.

Well, the auction for the Delta 763W ended tonight, the price didn’t go higher than the $3500, $3500.96 to be exact. The buyer paid right away! I can’t believe it. I sent him a thank you message. He wrote back that he’s in charge of maintenance at Delta’s maintenance HQ at ATL. He said that he loves the 767-300, it’s been like his baby for the past 16 years or so. How cool is that?

But I’m still puzzled by the fascination with the Delta 763W in the current livery. My eBay message inbox was flooded with people who have the same model and they were all asking why it was going for so much. I told him them I have no idea.

Yesterday, someone else put up a “Buy It Now” sale on eBay for this same model, priced at $3000. I watched it out of curiosity, and it sold today. Talk about crazy “Buy It Now” prices!

Another seller contacted me because he put up his Delta 763W up for auction, and it’s currently $790 with 4 days left to go until the auction ends. He asked me if Delta models are a hot item and if he should sell his whole Delta collection! I told him to keep the current and recent releases, it’s only certain ones that bring in big bucks, like the 727-200 and the L-1011 in the classic Widget livery. Maybe the 757-200 in that livery goes for a lot, too, I don’t know.

Who needs the stock market when we have diecast?

Man I am glad for you that I get to eat crow on this one. That's amazing. I just looked and I bought mine in 2017 for $67. I could almost understand the Widget one going for big dollars, but GJ has not exactly been shy about making models in the latest livery, so I'm just as stumped as everyone. Maybe since the 767's are now likely to be retired sooner than folks thought is why people are jumping on the models. Unreal.
