Default broken rubber tires

Hello,

has anyone ever had a problem with broken rubber tires?
I have more than 100 diecast models from different manufactures and the only model with broken tires are the JC Wings Singapore A380.Not all of them are brocken. the model has not been exposed to direct sunlight and stands always on a stand.

regards

Ben

Try searching on eBay to get some spare tyres. These are not for an A380 but the tyres may fit. Worth a try.

I wouldn’t get those Hogans. They should be plastic so they’re not going to just swap out. You need to find replacement tires, either through donor gear or otherwise online, if you want to actually replace them.

Gemini used to supply spare tyre set with their 1/250th models
As before I dont understand why a spare tyre and aerial set can't be included with models - especially at the price they are now.

Yeah, I brought this up before a few years back. You can use what plumbers use for rubber parts to condition the rubber. Don't use Vaseline or similar products with harsh chemicals that will break down the rubber.

I have had the same issue with 2x Gemini200 777's & 1 Gemini200 787. No idea why its happened? Like you not in sunlight or anything that would cause obvious rubber damage?

I found the Hogan tyres to be a little snuggle and do need a good bit of force to get over the hubs

The tyres will fit over the hubs, no need to replace the whole set of gear?

Same issue on nose tire, Aeroclassics DC-8. Split for unknown reason.

For B747‘s try the HERPA set... it’s perfect (and may be also fit on other wide bodies) !!!

Oh don't even start me with these broken, crumbling rubber tires. Please manufacturers if there is no quality control on your rubber tires, make them out of plastic. They will last longer for collectors who like to roll them down the runway.

I'm affraid everybody encounters broken tires sooner or later. I found out in my cabinet that the top shelf models faced simular problems. Probably due to the light wich is in the cabinet (hot and dry), replaced it with led now. Tyres can be changed with hogan tyres, I keep a variaty of spares in my hobby kit. The rubber dries out causing the rubber to split.

Aviaction made a very good comment, manufacturers should allways include some spare tyres in the box. That would be great service and not expensive for them to do.

Ben,
You can get Hogan gear replacements and just rob the tires and refit onto your model. Caution: They could be a tight fit. I warmed some up in hot tap water and they went on easy enough.

Try here: https://www.diecastairplane.com/stor...380-1-200.html

You should see the Hogan A380 gear set for $7.95. I'd buy 2 sets (just in case).

Good luck and keep us informed!

Can somebody tell me what Hogan replacement tire will fit nose wheels of the DC-8? Can't seem to find tires specifically for the -8.

Yes, me too. But I've replaced the tires on most of mine with new repros as the originals were rock hard. But NEVER split. Of course, my DT airliners are fine, as they are steel. Perfect for those countless landings & take-offs on concrete sidewalks.

Thanks guys. I ordered some Hogan 767 wheels for the DC-8. If that doesn't work, I'm going to order The o-rings. Pure genius!

if you have a product from JC Wings can't you just contact JC Wings and ask them to send you some new tires? I am sure they have something prepared for such things right or Gemini-200 maybe?

Since Gemini Jets uses the same gears as JC Wings.

Hi Folks,

After a few forays into ordering boxes of O rings I found the best fix tyres for 1:200 planes and GSE to be 1.5 or 2.5 VIT type (see pics). Plenty on eBay

Another alternative. Rubber gaskets kits can also work a treat from your local hardware store. I use the little ones on my 1:200 on my diecast flying boat maintenance frames, the bigger ones on taps.

O-Rings are good replacement for the rubber tires of our models and are much more resistant.

Depending on your model and what you need, the other solution can be a lead wire cut to the appropriate length.
That's what I did on this little Spirit of Saint Louis.

I did not use glue, only clear coat applied with a fine brush, they are not painted, to me the result is quite good.

Excellent idea for those non-standard sized wheels. I have to keep that in mind.

So my box of o rings came today.
much smaller than expected.
so too small for 1:200

but look excellent for 1/400 even those really small ones, like 737 front tyres that fall off, never to be seen again

What do you mean come in? I guess with Covid you can't shop? This is a special requirement that you need to inspect the o-rings in person prior to purchase. Shopping online will not work with o-rings. Tip # 2
