49 years of Qantas Boeing 747's

Qantas first 747 was VH-EBA 747-238B "City of Canberra" it arrived after it's ferry flight 16th August 1971. Tomorrow VH-OEJ 747-438ER "Wunala" will be the last Qantas 747 to leave wrapping up 49 years of Qantas 747 service. At 14.00 a take off is planned to fly north over the Sydney Opera house and the northern suburbs of Sydney, Wunala will then track west towards Parramatta Western Sydney. She then will hook turn and track down the Parramatta river down to Sydney Harbour and low level 1500ft over the Sydney Harbour Bridge's north pylon before tracking south down to Wollongong / Illawarra field where HARS is located. Wunala will do a low level flyby over VH-OJA and the field before leaving for the last time bound for Majove. The flight number is QF 7474 tail is OEJ for those interested in tracking. I intend to be at HARS, however, with social distancing and Covid-19 restrictions it's not going to be easy. I hope to get some good photos and video for the 1:1 section of this forum. Qantas had always intended to retire VH-OEJ on 50 years of Boeing 747 Qantas service but Covid-19 changed all that. 49 years of models to show you now

I always liked those Qantas 70s colors.

A very bittersweet moment indeed!

Thank you Aussiejets for the excellent photos showing the rich history of these QF birds. You've given the Qantas 747s the recognition they deserve!

Great overview of the 747 fleet with some very classic liveries. The classic SP is probably my favourite one. COVID sure messed up some nice farewell parties for the 747, not just at Qantas.
Did Qantas ever consider sending their last 747 to the founders museum in Longreach?

What an amazing line up Steve, great to see them all together. The true end of an era...the past years we have seen so many Queens go into retirement.... United, Delta, Air France, Qantas, KLM, British Airways and so on. Covid strikes hard on all of us including the 747 and A380. Glad I pre ordered Wunala to remember the Qantas Queen.

Wow. Another sad chapter in aviation. I have the Wunala OEJ. A great model of the Queen.

This makes me also very sad...

Beginning to work at FRA 22 years ago, everyday the B747’s from QANTAS we’re standing below my office window in Terminal 2.

And my highlight was watching the WUNALA taking off I’m JNB just looking directly down the runway as I was sitting in Business in the SAA A340-600 just entering the runway behind this aircraft...

Well at last some people had a great day flying it for the last time (see attached pictures)...

GOOD BYE !!!

Yes they did. Qantas offered OEJ to both Qantas Founders museum in Longreach Queensland and also to HARS, also Qantas 747 flight simulators were offered. Both museums are full. So it will remain that VH-OJA the only 747-400 in the southern hemisphere will be preserved for future generations.

We have a fine sunny day To farewell the the iconic Qantas 747

Superb mate!

Qantas have had some bonza schemes over the years and we are very fortunate to have had a good number of them produced in diecast

My first flight in a widebody was a Qantas 747-200 in 1981 so the old girl has a special place in my heart & from memory I have 10 QF 747's in my 1:200 diecast hangar ;)

This is fantastic thanks for letting me know via FB Messenger btw Steve, lovely collection you have there :)

The 1970's Ochre Liver surely is touching tho I have to admit that :)
Still Nalanji Dreaming would be my favioorite QANTAS B747, a QF B74-338 the VH-EBU that being, JC Wings did a fine job with that one, VH-OJB goes well with it too, as I have done in my new banner pic here:

Superb effort by the Qantas team to ensure that the flight path drew out the correct kangaroo from the previous livery (which OEJ wears) rather than the new Qantas silver roo logo. It might just be a small detail but I think it's pretty special and fitting for a proper final farewell!

Still on her way to LA. Can't believe it's really her last flight. Pre ordered VH-OEJ to honor the Qantas 747 farewell.

Landed in LAX and will start soon to its final flight (this wasn’t it...)

Re: 49 years of Qantas Boeing 747's

Just saw on tonight's news that all the four crew took turns on the controls on the final hour of the flight. On landing each one of them switched of one engine each.

There is light at the end of the tunnel. I just learned on the news that Qantas has sold all six 747-438ER's to a new customer. What colours will they wear next? We will see. Covid may see these aircraft remain in the grave yard.

That would be quite a feat if these planes stay airborne. With the market flooded with 747's and these ones powered by RR engines (which makes them less common I guess), there is no shortage of choice. Don't know their age, but maybe that makes them more attractive.

A proper send off from Qantas for the Queen I am staring at you British Airways!! Cannot accept the fact that Monarchy won’t pay a tribute to their flying Queens. Please learn from Qantas how’s the job done. An emotional video about final departure events thank you Sam & Qantas...

Qantas paid a proper farewell to the Queen. Hopefully KLM will do the same as the last three combi's in the world go out of service. But considdering the huge losses the company made the last few months this is highly doubtfull. ..

Re: 49 years of Qantas Boeing 747's

yes months and months of GPS planning was organized with the assistance of the RAAF I am hearing. Also, I am hearing only the GE engines are being parted out on the Qantas 747-438ERs and the aircraft are scrap. Media down here may have got that wrong. Now that is sad. Anyhow for those of you who have not seen the GPS coordinates on FB they looked like this

Hopefully KLM and BA can donate an 747-4 each to a museum for future generations and the last one for each airline to get the send of they deserve!
