Default I just started collecting... advise?

I just started collecting 1/200 models. As a kid I always wanted nice models and now 43 I just found out there are models which do not have to glue yourself!

I bought a few of my favorites of the Gemini200 line. 747, 787, 777, MD11 all KLM.

I like the quality of them and would like to also buy ones from Inflight 200, JC and others.

My question is which is very hard to find between the lines. Which of the other brands are save to buy and which brands are not as good as the Gemini ones? Or are certain models from certain brands better?

And do I have to buy models I want if available or can you be patient and models will come available once in a while.

(I would love to have an Orange Pride 773ER and there is one from inflight200 available but JC wings will release one soon).

Looking forward to your replies and thanks!

For the time being, buy what you like ...

But very soon you will have to establish your own collecting criteria, manufacturer, airline, type of aircraft ...

Read the forum, you will find a lot of interesting advice.
Be careful, you will have to be selective among all these comments.

Welcome to the forum.

Jean Pierre.

Welkom Meneer Guggenheim,

The best way is to go to a store and hold some of these models in your hand and compare their overal finish, level of detail, solidity, color and how they sit on their wheels and on a stand. What one collector may find acceptable is a deadly sin for another collector. I would make this comparison before I would buy the Orange pride 777.

The more expensive model is not always the best one i.m.o.. Gemini models are generally good models, but I would not buy all their KLM releases

There are very few models where you will have an option to choose between manufacturers, although the frequency does seem to be increasing lately.

I analyzed Inflight, Phoenix and JC Wings before buying the JCW Orange Pride B777. To me it was the most accurate depiction of the livery.

Welcome to the forum. Richard Stretton wrote this article for 1:400 scale, but I feel it also applies in 1:200: https://www.yesterdaysairlines.com/who-is-the-best.html

Essentially, you can't answer this question with a blanket statement. As other responses have alluded to, every mould is different and typically has good points and bad points. My advice is to search the forum for comparison posts*, use the database at DiMA (diecastmodelaircraft.com) to look at pictures, and, as Maarlandair notes, you will start to develop your own sense of what you find acceptable vs not.

*Actually it's easier to use Google and just put site:diecastaircraftforum.com in your search rather than relying on the search engine here

Welcome to DAC meneer Guggenheim. You will find many pics of many brands here from so many models. As stated there are some very good molds and some poor ones. If you want to see some pics of models you'd like to buy, don't hesitate to ask here.

Thanks for all the nice welcomes!

I set some rules .. for now... Only KLM.. I made the mistake to buy some 1/200 models instead of 1/400 so I am now stuck with 1/200 models as I won't collect both.

I am not sure where it will go but to be honest I can place about 12 wide bodies and 24 smaller jets on the place I will show them so I need to be selective.

May I ask which models people prefer from certain brands?

I bought the orange pride from IF200 of the dutch 'ebay' for 70 euro's which was a good deal as it is in mint condition. So I have my first IF200 model now.

Going to buy the E190 next. I probably go for the A330 as well but have not yet decided from which brand.

You asked, "Which brand to people prefer." Typically, even if collectors have a preference, they do not marry a particular brand. I have a small collection of seventy-eight 1:200 models. Within that number there are at least a dozen different manufactures represented. What you will see as you get deeper into the hobby is that preferences may start generally and move to specifics. For example, maybe someone likes InFlight but in regard to 747's they prefer Gemini Jets' mould. Best advice has already been given: Collect what you like. My additional advice is to have fun and not get overly critical about moulds, details, etc. As awesome as these models can be, they are rarely perfect and wanting perfection can cause from frustration.

Just buy what you like - you'll learn what YOU (and only you) prefer rather quickly. Ignore the micrometer banter on this forum. Every one of us has their own opinion - and in my opinion - the search and satisfaction of choosing what you want is the best part of this hobby.

Enjoy it. It's just really expensive - so I get why you are asking in the first place!

My advice? RUN!! Get out while you still can!! Save your wallet and your sanity!!! Haha

But seriously, Gemini, Inflight, Aeroclassics, Phoenix, JC Wings, Hobby Master, Herpa... I have models from a wide range of manufacturers and there are things to love (and hate) about all of them. Ignore all the opinions and “rules” and just buy what you like. That’s going to make you the happiest.

Thanks for all the replies but I think I expressed myself not clearly enough. I was just curious to others personal opinions.

I have a KL 777 from IF200 and GJ200 and after careful examination I think I prefer the GJ200 model but will look at others in the future. And it is a lot of is indeed personal taste.

I made pictures but still need to figure out if there is interest in a review by a newbe and if I can upload already to the forum.

I am curious what other personal taste is for certain KL models. I am not trying to make the best list as I do understand it is personal. Just curious.

I will try to see models first before I buy them and buy what I like.

With buying models. I am under the impression models are released in limited quantities and sell out so if I like a model or want a particular one, I should buy one sooner than later.

My wishlist in order
KL 767, 310, 332, 333, 737?, f50, f70 & f100, DC10, F50, DC8, DC9

My non KL wishlist Transavia 757, Cathay Pacific L1011, SQ340-500 and still need to decide on a A380 but I think it will be the AF one.. as I have flown her a lot.

And a Concorde I would like to have a BA Concorde last livery as I took one of the last Concorde flights as I had to flown it once!

You are correct, and since most of your wishlist is KLM, this seems to be doubly true in this case - they seem to sell out faster than most. Cathay is also harder to get hold of because that airline is much more protective of their trademarks, so model makers have to release 'under the table' so to speak.

I was wondering why so few Cathay models existed. I flew on many in the seventies and eighties as I grew up in the far east. I have a fondness for the Tristar.

I am going to the AviatonMegaStore tomorrow for the first time. I did not know we had such a huge shop in The Netherlands. My secondhand 777 from IF200 came originally from there and I need a replacement part which they have for me. I might leave my wallet at home..

I need a set of main landing gear for an IF200 777 as well - if you wouldn't mind letting me know if they do have them, I will follow up with them.

You will be amazed...great store, you will get lost in all the models they have. For a small country like ours, NL has lots of online shops to choose from but the Aviation megastore is the biggest one to visit.you allways end up buying something

Nice picks. The GJ "Thank you" A346 was out of my basic collecting criteria, but had to have it anyway. A superb model as are the other KLMs.

So, the problem now is how am I going to store my collection. I have a 3,30m by 45cm shelf which is never in direct sunlight so I might be able to put them their. Also the freckin Cat can not reach that spot as well.

How are you storing the collection. Most of you I think have a lot of models!

I just use Ikea cabinets but of course you can use glass cabinets to keep the dust out or build some custom made cabinets which fit the avaialable space nicely. I have seen some great examples here. In general its a good idea to work with flexible shelfing, so you can add a shelf if you run out of space.

AMS is indeed a candystore for airplanes, but you can still only buy the fairly regular stuff there. I ended up buying my 15th KLM 747 there yesterday (even though I promissed myself not to do that) and bought Herpa's KLM EMB-190 with new livery and 100 years logo as well.

Have fun collecting! Share some pics if you have your collection set up.

Ikea Detolf cabinets with some extra shelves added are an inexpensive solution (search posts here and on the web for how to modify for the extra shelves). I have 2 of these in my office for some favorites. I am moving to a new house now and will likely get more of these and do another mod that I found here: https://www.tfw2005.com/boards/threa...f-mod.1041700/

That is so true. Be sure to have deep pockets.

I swore to myself to stop buying for a while, but going on these boards and looking at diecast shops, it is difficult to control the urge. Select wisely

I was thing about the same item. Problem is, will need to buy 3~4 of these to fit my collection or get it custom made.

3-4 of these will be a lot cheaper than anything custom made - I've done both.

I’m new to die cast collecting as well and I’m sticking with the advice of seasoned collectors here. First narrow it down ( because there’s too much goodies ) and buy what you like. I’ve found that many members here are a walking encyclopedia and post many great details about real planes, specific mould details, missing or redundant antennas etc. As a 747 enthusiast I’ve narrowed it down to a particular type with a few exceptions ( looking for a Concorde and hoping for An124/225 release in 1/200 diecast someday ). Have fun learning and collecting...

Anyone who has bought from eBay to The Netherlands from abroad. Are they taxed? If it are pre-owned models? And how much?

I bought several models via ebay, but look out custom costs can be high! Pm me if you have more questions. And for a nice and cheap cabinet for your models check marktplaats! Bought one last week for 35 euroos!

This how I have them now but need to find a better solution. I have a wall which is out of sight for the wife and no direct sunlight. I can fit like 3x330cm shelfs that are cat and kids proof. Dust is an issue but I do not have room for cabinets. So it need to be wall mounted.

After a full day of figuring it out, I decided I am going for IKEA method 80X40X37cm wall mounted cabinets. I have 329cm space between the walls and it will be then be 320cm wide so a decent fit. I can have 3 layers of planes. Wanted glass cabinets but that would cost so much more than this solution.

The CEO of the house has approved it as long as the collection does not get bigger than what fits in those cabinets she is okay with it.
I hope she does not figure out how expensive the models actually are...

Upload pics when you are done. Although I think the hardest part will be controlling your fleet size

Like this line up too, there is someone here in NL who makes groundplates that fit your shelve to give your models more of an airport look. Have a look over here; www.janpolet.nl
