Default Skymarks UPS 747-8F wheel up mod

So seeing lately how cargo traffic demand has rocketed while passenger traffic bottomed out as well as the imminent retirement of the king of the sky A380, I couldn't help but put together "The Queen of Cargo Planes" UPS 747-8F from Skymarks that's been sitting there for a while.

I am sure i am not the first one to think about this or done this, but just mod my Skymarks 747-8F to wheel up configuration! It's not hard to do but you just have to be careful. all you need to do is remove the nosegear by keep wiggling it back and forth carefully. The wing gears are tougher to remove because they are glued down very securely but a tiny flat blade screwdriver really help. The fuselage gears are not attached. I mean it would help so much if skymarks would just send this out without the gears attached. would have saved me as well as them a lot of time....lol...

The good thing is that the gears and bay doors from a hogan 747 works perfectly with it so if you damage the skymarks gears you can always use a set from hogan. MOST IMPORTANT THING: Just make sure to minimize any damage to the wells for the gears when trying to remove them. I mean there will probably be a little damage unless you just got a lucky set that wasn't glued tight but it is possible to minimize the damage a lot if you are careful.

Here are the pics of my mods. I use the orange bay covers from the hogan 747-8 sunrise for illustration purpose. but you can use a grey set.

the gears that came with the skymarks and hogan are also very interchangeable. i use half and half of the main gears that came with the skymarks the other half from hogan in the gear down pics just to show how close they are to each other!

Sad to see A380 retired but the Queen will be around for for a while carrying cargo. Boeing definitely got a winner in the 747.

Also, this is one of the cheaper most available way to have a 1/200 UPS 747-8F with wheel up and down option with the straight wings. It's a lot cheaper than Gemini one if you don't mind the plastic and a little less details. It's also better than the Hogan one because 1. good luck finding the Hogan one 2. it has the straight wings instead of the ridiculous curved wings 3. correctly printed UPS logo on the tail and an actual tail number N606UP

Looks good in the "inflight mode".

I've not done a wheels-up mod of a SkyMarks/Risesoon 747 but I've exchanged the landing gear on a few SM/RS 747s with a set of Hogan. To me, the SM/RS landing gear struts, etc. are too thick. It is also quite easy to replace just the hubs/tyres with HG if you don't like the flat hubs. And with a bit of detailing it turned out pretty nice.

That's a nice 747-8i from skymarks with the straight wings. Think i might have to get one too.

The wheel up is so easy as the bay door from the hogan 747 fits very good with minor mods. No harder than changing the gears from hogan.

Ta. I realise 99.99% of collectors now prefer diecast to plastic, but I'm the opposite. Though what few models I currently own are diecast.

diecast are more detail but too expensive and the boxes up a lot more room.. when it's time to move, the plastic models help a lot too.

I have a bunch of dragon wings. i would still be buying dragons if they would have still been making new stuffs. they are the only one with removable gears in 1/400.

@wildpig, great job you did there!, just didn't expect the wheel doors being red on the UPS B747-84AF/SCD's tho
A handy pain job can fix that of course

Herpa Wings & Hogan Wings make really nice PVC Models imo, I love their molds as well, my Lufthansa B747-830i is from Herpa Wings and it's pretty decent tbh, even has some of the antenna's on it as well, the same for my Hogan Wings Trans Australian Airlines Airbus A300B4-203, they have excellent details for being PVC models:

If you are on a tight budget, PVC models are certainly a good outcome and definitely worth looking in to

Yeah, i always like limox and hogan models. Unfortunately, they seem to be going the way of dragon, just basically slowly regressing. so i guess that's because most collectors nowaday want more details and diecast and willing to pay more for metal? anyway yeah, i am glad that the skymark 747-8 mould is very close to hogan 747 mould in a lot of way.

Unfortunately can't say the same about skymarks 777x with folding wingtips. see my other posts

I have a lot of diecasts, but I also have a lot of plastics that I try to improve on like adding antennas, red jewel beacon lights, etc. I have 2 Herpa premium 747s (NZ LOTR Legolas and KLM) DL 737, LH727, and AA A300 (I hate the wing to fuselage joint)- All made of plastic. They are so detailed especially the transparent window on both cockpit and passengers'. They are only obviously transparent when you hold them up against bright light and you can see the light through. I have often wondered why Herpa can't make all their 747's, 737s, 727s, A300 (except retool the wing joint) like their premium models. They're made of plastic but the details are much equal to the metal diecasts. I think they can charge more for these (BUT not like they are premium) but a bit lower than diecasts since they are made of plastic. But again, I don't know the mechanics of the metal and plastic production so just giving my amateur 2 cents worth. Now back to the thread- Wildpig thanks for the pics, instructions, and ideas. I will be making my own Skymarks UPS 747-8F wheels up. It looks sleeker.
