Default Happy 80th Birthday to Air New Zealand

Well this one almost slipped by without notice. To All the Kiwi brothers across the pond, Happy Birthday to your great airline. May you survive Covid-19 to have another 20 more and much much more.

Air New Zealand was founded in "Windy Wellington" 26th of April 1940. Just one day after ANZAC day 1940, and the bond and connections between our two countries will never be broken by the spirit of the original Anzac's at Gallipoli 1915 World war I campaign.

Here is Air New Zealand's 80th Birthday video from youtube ----> https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MWcEo8opELo

I have a small modest Air New Zealand fleet and fitting with the spirt of ANZAC's starting with an TEAL/QANTAS joint operated Lockheed Electra by Hobbymaster and a Inflight200 747-200 London Special , and JCW 787-9 & 777-200 All Blacks. Soon to join 1:200 DC8-52 Aero classics and My Inflight200 DC-10 Air New Zealand copy is not permitted in front of a camera until Inflight fix it up. I wish I had the TEAL flying boat, when it was released, anyhow, a very Happy 80th Birthday to Air New Zealand. 80 Years young!

that ANZ B747-219B gets my win here, it' beats all in the picture
Also one I should try and find, but atm I seek an Irish Aer Lingus / East African Airways B747-148, the hunt goes on as always as well all have to face during our model hunts!

Nice pics as always Steve

I like the Electra. Classic livery and airplane.

I somehow missed this thread. MUST have that 747, but in 1:400 scale. I'll do some research to see if one's been produced.

Beautiful collection. I'd be interested to know more behind the story of the jointly operated ANZ/ QF Electra.

Been a while since I've dusted off my collection... All stored in the loft unfortunately. Wish they would finally do a retro 767.

Hobbymaster. The KLM version is outstanding as well. They even did rounded props like KLM's were.

Ok I will do my best with what I have found Matt,

ZK-TEB was the second Lockheed Electra ordered by TEAL. ZK-TEB was entered onto the New Zealand register on 24th November 1959. It was first test flown on 10th of December 1959 at Burbank CA USA and accepted by Tasman Empire Airways Ltd on 18th December 1959. This aircraft was named "Atarau" indigenous Maori word which = (Moonlight) in English.

On the first of April 1965 TEAL changed their name to Air New Zealand and that's no joke to the non believers of my Aero Classics AC2ZKNZF post, it's 100 percent true, TEAL to AIR NEW ZEALAND 01/04/1965. True no April fools joke.

At a time in the early 1970's Qantas did hold shares in both Air New Zealand and Air Pacific. What I can't confirm at this time but am still trying to get in touch with a good source HARS captain, is the question of was this Air New Zealand /Qantas, the very first Qantas Code share agreement? I believe it was.

This aircraft's Air New Zealand titles were removed from the stripe on the tail under the four stars and moved then to the forward fuselage. Qantas titles where applied at the rear door which were used for boarding when this aircraft while it remained as a passenger aircraft for Air New Zealand in 1971 & 1972. Air New Zealand then sold this aircraft and has had many owners since. It was also converted to a freighter early 1980's.

I think you will find it's still flying as a Fire fighter water bomber today as see here ----> https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3RUIjlfdy4s
