Default DC-9/MD-80 love

Since it appears Delta is shedding it's remaining MD-88/90's early, I guess the conclusion of DC9/MD80 service (at least in the US) is weeks away. I know the 717 will still be around but those don't count.

The DC9/MD80 helped get me to some of my most memorable vacations, seeing grandparents one last time, and to interviews. I personally will miss them. 3x2 and quiet (at least for half), what's not to love. These are on my flown on list...still need someone to make a Continental and a Delta Ron Allen scheme.

I too am a fan of the DC9/MD80 family with many fond memories of flying on them.

Big thumbs up for your collection.

I'm so thrilled and fortunate to have the Delta, Conti, TWA, and EAL DC-9s in my collection. In real life, I have flown on Midway Airlines' DC-9 and MD-87, and quite possibly an MD-80 stretch. That one was a red eye from LAS to MDW. Very last row, and I could see the front of the jet moving before the back did. Eerie sight.

Beautiful array! Do you have Hogan's MD-80? If you do, do you have a problem with the wheels crumbling? I have 2 with the front wheels crumbling. I have been looking for MD-80 replacement wheels in 1/200. But I don't think there are any.

Sad news to hear DL is eliminating their stretch 80s/90s. Back when I traveled heavily for business in the 2000s, aside from the regional jets, AA Super 80s and Delta 88s were the usual aircraft I ended up on. Anyone else remember catching AA Mad Dogs out of St. Louis?

I thought the MD-90's were going to be around for a little while longer with Delta?

They originally planned on 2022 last year which was already an accelerated retirement. During an analyst call they said they were willing to accelerate the MD-88/90 retirements again but that it was too early to sound alarm bells. That was the beginning of March. By mid March they said they were going to accelerate their retirements. I doubt the MD-90 will see 2021 but we’ll see.

Several of them have already been flown to Blytheville. I’ve never seen anything come back out of Blytheville.

You have to add a Northwest Bowling Shoe Mad Dog! Just a biased opinion.

Such a great collection indeed. I surely regret the few chances I had at snagging a Widget Mad Dog for less than $100. I had to settle with an inflight DC-9 instead. Still a great plane! As much as I will miss it, I won’t miss deadheading near the aft lav!

I don't consider it "settling", but that's my opinion.

Delta has announced all remaining MD-88’s and MD-90’s to exit by June.

Off topic but do you have any close up pics of that custom Kiwi 727 model you have?

I'm not the best when it comes to this stuff but here it is. The donor was a Jet X Continental Micronesia.

Oh man, I love that Delta widget MD! I wish they would reissue that.

Back in the 1980s, AA’s Super 80s were so cool! At the time, they seemed so high tech compared to the 727s they were replacing. I loved them in the Silverbird livery! I never understood why the original ones had a black radome, though. They were eventually changed to grey and then they matched the rest of the fleet.

Upsetting, the MD-90's still have a lot of life left in them. At this rate the 717's cannot be too far behind them.

What's funny about the 717's is that we've always heard is that they're all in high demand. Yet, since COVID, I've seen two articles suggest that Delta wants to get rid of them since they're mostly leased, they may require new seats, and they would buy the MAX if Boeing will take them back.

Here's one article from Forbes on it:

Thanks so much for the Kiwi pics. It's my goal to do a custom one as well down the road.
