Default GJ Flaps Down Models

Because I've been out of the hobby for so long, I've not been regularly following releases when they become available. I recently learned of the Virgin Atlantic B744 flaps-down model. I can't seem to find release date information but they seem to be sold out on the retail level. Because I'm a huge Virgin Atlantic fan, I'm considering breaking my "buy no 1:200 scale models" rule to have this model. My question is: How fragile are the flaps-down models? They look really cool but I'm concerned about breakage, especially given I'm moving from the U.S. to London when the borders reopen. Oh, and if any of you have this model and you've also taken photos of it, I'd love to see them.

Randy - they break easily. they also can be joined easily . Though i have had good luck (knock on wood) , proper packaging may increase the chance of safe delivery by a big margin.

Thanks for the feedback. Perhaps I should consider taking it on the plane as a carry-on, though I've absolutely no experience with going through TSA with models. (Any of you who may be reading and have done this, please comment!)

Do you have this model? I know you collect Virgin.

When the first JC 747 flap down models were introduced (Cathay ANA Pokeman and UAL Final flight) there was an inherit problem with one half of the forward outer leading edge slats separating as one long piece from the wing. Fortunately it was just lack of glue and an easy fix to reattach. I have yet to see this on any Gemini 744 flap down models as I have all from both.

As for fragility, you obviously dont want to handle the model in such a way that your hand bumps hard into the flap and slat areas, but for the most part are quite okay to handle just remember to handle the model by the fuselage. Additionally, as mentioned properly boxed, they are just fine for shipping as the returns at ADI on the flap down models are almost non existent.

I have checked dozens of boxes containing several models on flights as baggage and have never had an incident with damage. As for carry on, over the years I have also hand carried dozens of diecast models through security with no issues. Every once in a while you get some TSA Agent looking to be a hero, asks to pull the model out so they can score points like they're onto something big, raising a red flag that it could be used as a weapon. This is usually rectified by a supervisor coming over and letting it continue on.

The Virgin flap down is the pride of my collection and should never be passed on by any Virgin fan.

Thanks so much for the feedback, Russell! I don't handle my models often and when I do I pick'em up by the forward fuselage and the very back where the APU is located.

I know I'm not going to be able to put a model of this size in my baggage and don't have enough models to pack them in a box to check in the hold. But also, when I move to London I'll have one carry-on sized piece and three 29" pieces of baggage which will have to contain everything I own, along with a laptop bag. I just now discovered Virgin has changed their checked baggage policy since I booked my flight. When I booked my flight, my class of service allowed three pieces of checked baggage free. Bookings made after 9th December are now allowed two pieces of checked in my class of service. I'm willing to bet when I get ready to rebook my now canceled flight, I'll be held to the new rules despite the reservation was booked in August. I'll plead with the reservationist when I get ready to rebook. My only option really is to take it on as hand baggage. (Virgin allows two pieces per pax.)

Any chance GJ is considering producing flaps-down models of the B789? I'd LOVE to own a Virgin B789 flaps-down! (Especially if it's an aircraft I've flown on!)

Thanks so much for the photos! I guess I'll pull the trigger on one of the eBay listings! P.S. Bought it from your friend Bob at Sky's the Limit (eBay store).

I took models on the plane a few times. Never had problems. Security didnt even ask what is in the box. Only once officer asked me to show what is inside the box, but it seemed like he was just curious how does this airplane look like.
But my flights were not from the US, I dont know if rules are different there.

I’ve only been hassled by TSA once with models, in SFO. Only Dragon wings as the wings are plastic and don’t appear on X-ray.

Must be in the water in the Bay Area, as I had problems going through San Jose TSA with 2 1:200 747's. TSA goon said the wings could be broken off and used as a weapon. Took them to secondary table and unwrapped them call over a supervisor. Like Russ said above, supervisor luckily had a brain and happened to be a collector. Checked them out, said nice additions to collection and let me take them on with me.

Another one in Denver was funny about it. Had about 15 or so 1:400's in carry on. She was sitting behind xray, I had already gone through and was waiting for my bag on the other side. She looked over with a smile on her face...I said I know, will be sleeping on sofa...she laughed!

Good to know re flaps down as I have yet to add one to my collection. Was thinking about it.

Yes, let me break the wings off a $200 model so I can use them as a weapon.

I hope GJ brings us some flaps-down B789s, specifically another Virgin Atlantic.

Well mates, I've successfully moved from Seattle to London! I arrived yesterday and immediately started unpacking. Thankfully, all of my models made the journey intact! My 1:400 scale models were packed in checked baggage and I took the 1:200 Virgin in a carry-on similar to a laptop bag. My journey over was on AA SEA-ORD and BA ORD-LHR. (Sorry Virgin Atlantic, yes I know: "NO WAY BA/AA" but you left me no choice!) TSA in Seattle had no problem with the 1:200 model but the TSA agent at ORD wanted to take the model out to inspect it and run the "wand" over it. He said, "Nice model, even has antenna and lights on it." I responded, "It better be for $200." So, I now have it proudly displayed with my 1:400 models. As to the flights: the AA was on a B738. All First Class seats were occupied. Economy Class, all aisle and window seats were occupied. No one in any of the middle seats. The BA flight was on a B789, I'd say there were about 75-80 pax total.

Hey GJ, I know people have complained about the recent TWA B722 release regarding the placement of the black "ice detection" stripes. Here's a photo of the BA B789. How about a release with tape on the wings and a hole on one of the wings, too?

Congratulations on your move! I'm thrilled that all of your aircraft made it safely. Hey, you had a connection through my airport (ORD). I bet you enjoyed having so much room in the Dreamliner. Now that you're settled, you can start collecting 200s again 😁✈️

Thanks, guys!

Tony, I've never been to Chicago (always wanted to but never made it) but it looked lovely from the air. ORD Terminal 5 was like a ghost town. The only two shops open were Burger King and Hudson's.

Is that your whole collection? I shudder to think what it will be like packing up my stuff and I don't have as large a collection as most on here.

I have some NG L-1011s (EA, DL, TWA, BA) and an NG BA 757 (Pause to Remember G-BIKC) but they're stored. I shouldn't have purchased the L-1011s and I'll most likely sell them. I hesitate displaying the NG BA 757 due to its rarity.

Congratulations on your successful move to London. I hope your collection starts growing in this beautiful city. Your post gave me a beautiful glimmer of hope about traveling and flying again which I love doing. London is one of my favorite cities to hangout. I go there at least 5 times a year (I was there twice this year from January 10 to the 17th then went back on February 13 and flew back to SFO on Feb 28 right before the s--t hit the fan). I read much earlier that there was a 14-day self-quarantine upon arrival. Was it imposed?

Thanks again, guys. The move over wasn't how I wanted it to be (I had planned to fly non-stop on Virgin in Upper Class) but many things in life don't work out as we want or plan.

DouglasDC5, the AA/BA flight was my third attempt at getting here. The first was with Virgin; the second was with Icelandair who cancelled my flight two days after booking it. But it all worked out fine and I got my BA Avios points.

The 14-day self-quarantine goes into effect 4 June. I moved over when I did to avoid the quarantine. (It was originally scheduled for the end of May.) I don't plan to run around London during the next couple weeks anyway, but I wanted to be able to grocery shop. I had looked into grocery delivery but Sainsbury's, Tesco, and Waitrose all require a UK telephone number so the delivery driver can call me if there's an issue or upon arrival to let him/her in. (I'm on the top floor with no buzzer to let guests in.) I got the UK mobile number and bank account issues sorted yesterday.
