Default My first SMA MD-11

There are a few Delta Ron Allen planes that I would like. The MD-11 isn't one of them but I just decided to get one because I just don't know if or when any others will be made. This is my first SMA. It is noticeably heavier than the Gemini/JC versions. It's like the newer Inflight DC-10's or the Aviation 200 L-1011 like heavy.

The FedEx model I used for comparison is the first release Gemini from a few years ago and not the more recent one.

For this Delta livery, I liked it best on the MD-11.

I have that same SMA model and a few others. You can also use it to pound nails into the wall.

I added all these Delta's to my collection as they have popped up from time to time for around $100US.

I like them and as mentioned by OP very heavy!

There was a comparison thread on here when SMA came out with these. Quality was hit or miss with finish, but from what I recall most were in agreement this was the MD-11 mould to beat! Too bad they aren't making them as the company went out! Wonder what happened to the mould?

I too had one of the Delta MD-11 and I must say it was a beauty, but mine was missing a magnet on the landing gear and despite much outreach to SMA I was never able to get the part to make the fix. They promised, but never delivered. I eventually sold the model. The verdict is great models but poor customer support.

Nice MD11, guess the SMA mold is lost and gone by now?

Yes and No....both Inflight and AeroClassics have attempted in the past to acquire the mold to continue production as the mold still exists but were unable to strike a deal with the owner of the mold which I believe belongs to the original factory...Now the question is, what is the status of that factory??? who knows..

I have several SMA MD-11 models in my collection and have been quite pleased with them. It is a shame that they no longer produce them.

Interesting , so there still is a small chance to see models from that mold in the future..

Aeroclassics making a 1:200 MD11 sounds fun. My hope would that it leads to them dusting off other molds, like the Jet X 727.
