Well, in celebration of having a spare bedroom again, (Son off at College) it was time to take things to the next level. I am pretty pleased with the results. The cabinets are seven ikea detolf cases on a custom frame. I added extra shelves and LED puck lights. (Thanks to 100 plus AAA batteries) There is room for growth as all of these planes were in three cases just last week. You get the idea.... here are some pictures:
Last One: (I have to admit that I am having fun with the lights)
All I can say is museum quality all the way. Stunning...

Real tomato ketchup Eddie?
Nothing but the best! "I don't know why they call this stuff hamburger helper. It does just fine by itself, huh? I like it better than tuna helper myself, don't you, Clark?"
"you're the gourmet around here, Ed!"
All I can say is "Wow"
I love the one piece base, it makes a big difference. I am assuming that all of the lights are controlled by a remote.
There are some impressive detolf set ups on line, this would certainly be among the best, well done.
Love it all! The big cabinet base is awesome, and the colored lights are cooool. Always appreciate your Battleship collection too...the best there is with those custom 737s! And the plastic Northwest bowling shoe Airbus...! Okay, I’ll stop now
This looks very nice, the dream of every collector is to display his or her collection in a proper way..you did just that..beautiful!

Agree! Too modern for my taste, but nice display nonetheless with the added touch of the base! Congratulations and have fun acquiring more to display. Thanks for posting the pics!
Beautiful! I just finished mine too but they are in clusters since I don't have space for 7 in one spot. I don't have the lights but you inspired me to install them eventually. Thanks!!!
The extra shelves were added by attaching 1/16" round stock to the existing frame. I have seen it done by clamps but mine was done by drilling holes and using small screws. I had a glass shop cut the extra shelves ($10.50 US each which I thought was more than reasonable)

Can you show some more closeup pictures of this? It is definitely a lot cleaner than the clamp method and easier than welding additional bars in. Did you paint the new bars?

Very nice, can you buy extra shelves easily from ikea?
They do not sell extra shelves... you have to get them from a glass shop.

I will take a close up picture later today.... and I did repaint the entire frame once the conversion was complete.
Very cool - I really like the unified base idea. I have 2 Detolfs currently in my office and have done the extra shelf addition via clamps method, which isn't that noticeable, but yours is much cleaner.
Which puck lights did you get? I don't have any lighting in mine right now.

There is nothing I can say that hasn't already been said. Simply amazing and looks great all together! I'm really considering picking up a few of these Detolfs.
Great job!!

Thank you all again.... I have enjoyed my moment in the DAC sunlight!
Thanks for all the detail pics. I really like those cases, perfect for 1/200 collecting. The floating shelves I use are running out of space quickly! It looks like the longest airliners are the A340-600 and 747-8, does anyone know if these will fit?

Yes, 747-8i's A340-600's and A380's. See attached pictures to give you an idea. So very sorry for the really bad quality photos.
WOW!!! My apologies for being late to this FANTASTIC and visually AWESOME thread!! I have 6 detolf cases myself, but I am planning to customize the display cases into a horizontal format. I think I may have contributed a model or two towards AirlinerFan's display room here. Always a pleasure to see models I have sold in the past to collectors who have great hangar(s) display cases for them to admire with a huge smile! All the best with your 1/200 collection! Cheers! T7

You are never too late..... I thought you might remember some. Can't wait to see what you do with your cases.
