Default Bought first plane last year, haven't looked back

Hi everyone, as the title suggests I bought my first diecast model last year in May at a collector's show. I didn't really think much of it at the time, I just didn't want to go home empty handed so I bought a diecast plane which happened to be the Continental DC-10.

The more I looked at the model the more I started to admire it and wanted to expand my collection so I've been buying a few planes every couple months and now I feel like my collections getting a little too big. I don't really have the space for the boxes.

Anyways I hope you guys like my collection so far. There isn't really a theme, I've mostly been buying models that I think have cool liveries. I'm trying not to get multiples of one aircraft type but I feel like I'll eventually do just that haha.

Welcome to the forum.

That's an impressive collection for such a short amount of time.
My suggestion though is to have some sort of collecting criteria otherwise it will will get out of hand quickly. While "they are cool looking" is a valid criteria, it only narrows it down to almost all of them Choose whatever makes you happy.
As you've noticed the models are quite large and the boxes are even larger, so storage will become an issue.
Note how much space you have, and buy accordingly. It will take some self discipline at times.

P.S. I see you have the ever popular Detolf cabinets. There are plenty of threads showing how to double the number of shelves to give you more room. Use the search function at the top.

Yes, welcome to the forum. You have a great start. Having collected for over 20 years, may I suggest two pieces of advice. It's not about how many models you have, it's about loving what you have. I would much rather have 20 models I love, over 40 that are just OK. Also, be aware that the word "Rare" you will see frequently. Mostly on eBay. Try not to over pay for a model. Don't get me wrong, some models do have a short or shorter run over others. For example, one Aeroclassics DC-10 I have been eyeballing for some time. I won't pull the trigger, as the asking price is about triple what I think is reasonable. Any questions, many members would be happy to answer questions should you have any. Most important, have fun.

Thank you for the welcome! I agree it's going to take a lot of self discipline to but with so little room to work with I'm going to have to stop collecting for a bit. In the first few months of collecting I actually wanted to buy only Korean Air but it's been difficult finding places to buy them apart from online so I settled for ones I thought looked nice at the store.

I've seen some threads on doubling the shelves on Detolf cabinets, thought it's pretty neat I'm hoping I won't need to build those any time soon lol

I also agree on having a smaller number of planes than large. I might have to start selling some online to free up some space. I hate to admit it but I fell into that trap early on, I saw the word "rare" and it drove me to pay more than I should. Lessons learned

Welcome! Someone has been bitten!

Whatever you do...don't throw away the boxes as that will hurt resale and make it harder to ship if you decide later to move some along.

Happy collecting!

Welcome to the DA.C forums!!

I see you like Korean Air, so do i.. for me my first ever Die-cast airplane model was back in 2002 or 2003, i collected the Dragon Wings 1:400 models at first but it's always nice to look back what you collected at first and what you have accumulated over all these years.. also if you love military models as well, you better watch out because if you start collecting in 1:72, Hobby Master, Corgi or Century Wings etc., it might become a addiction pretty fast before you know it..

Anyway happy collecting and most important have fun & enjoy it while it lasts..

Thank you! I actually really do love military models. I've already browsed for quite a few and it's been tough holding myself back from buying any. I want to wait till I free up space and save a bit more before getting into the 1:72 scene. Hopefully that collection doesn't grow as fast as my other 200 models haha

Thank you! and yes I've read a few threads that said keeping the boxes is important. I'm thinking about reselling a few to free up space, will be hard since I love all of them. I really like how large the models are but at the same time I dislike how much space the boxes take up. It's a love/hate relationship

It's a hodgepodge of different airplanes. What's the reason to buy the rare livery Air France B727 and the fake AA Tu-154M? Some sort of collecting criteria is important otherwise you are lost. Enjoy this hobby!

I agree with everything stated above, but I'd also advise if you come across a low production or "rare" model for sale you'd like to add to your collection -- consider buying it, even if the price is a bit high. I have been scouring the globe for a certain 1/400 USAir MD-80 model for over 5 years now (JXM162A), with no luck. I've even offered $100 to someone to sell me theirs with no luck. Point is, get your holy grail if you can, a long term search can be tiresome.
