Question What are your collecting criteria for 1/200?

Interested to know what your collecting criteria are (if any).

My collecting criteria is quite simple and as follows:
1. Real world aircraft registration must not have caused a fatality.
2. No Airbus. (Don't find Airbus design to be aesthetic).
3. Polish preferred.

No real criteria. If I like it, I buy it. I guess you have several Pan Am's?

Nope! Used to collect American Airlines but have now dropped down to the aircraft I'm interested in like the MD83 (still waiting for a re-release of the 757 in chrome!) The only Pan Am I have at the moment is the Gemini 727 billboard. Like yourself, once I see something I buy it. Was going to pick up the Gemini 200 L1011 in the 70s Pan Am livery but when I saw the Delta Widget 767 on display at the shop I could not resist and bought it instead.

Yes, the Delta widget is tough to say no to. I have the Inflight200, Delta L-1011 from many years ago. I guess I have maybe 8-10 of Pan Am in 200 scale. I don't have the 727 you have. Lots of Pan Am in 400 scale. Like you, I avoid accident registrations. Dragon Wings did "Clipper Victor" way back. Passed on that one.

Until money is abundant, i cannot buy what i like, that would be every diecast model i lay my eyes on. For now, any opportunity i have to buy a model will like having a miss universe pageant having to decide between the 20 or so tied for first place, that I believe I must have, or holy grail as I tell my wife. She tells me "every plane is holy grail!"

1. Continental Airlines
2. Aircraft that I have seen in person
3. Aircraft I have seen at airports i have been to, particularly Houston and Los Angeles.
4. Special Liveries
5. Aircraft that best represents it's manufacturer. e.g. Air France Airbus A380
6. Military aircraft

Started building my diecast 1/200 collection about a year ago - and have been reading/following threads for about 2 years now without contributing.

As is with this hobby - once you catch the collecting fever - it doesn't stop!

Pretty simple:

- I collect the planes I have flown on. The aircraft type (including if it had winglets at the time, etc.) and the airline (including the livery at the time I flew on it) must match. I don't care about the reg number.
- I also collect ones in special liveries that I particularly like - i.e., Iron Maiden "Ed Force One."

Right now, that's 100 different distinct aircraft types and liveries.

Cheers! CJH

Aussiejets is hilarious, I have been collecting for 20 years and have a massive collection and just....wait for it....just 31 posts.

I prefer to read the forums and get insights. I should contribute more but just don't have the time. I'm doing this one now as it Australia Day and we have a public holiday!

This is pretty much my M.O. as well. I'm an omnivore in 1:400 but for space considerations I have limited my 1:200 purchases to those that have a direct connection with me. The two subjects where I have gone beyond this is with Delta and L-1011's - hard to resist either of those in any fashion.

1.Airliners and Airlines mostly from the 1960's 1970's and a few 1980's (eg Boeing 747-400).
2.Conservative liveries (color schemes) Absolutely NO special schemes.
Example:Airliners:
Boeing 707,727.747 and Boeing 777-300ER (One of the exceptions to my main preferences).Douglas DC-3,DC-6,DC-7,DC-8 and DC-10. Lockheed L-1011 Tristar and L-188 Electra.
Vickers VC-10,Viscount and Vanguard. Airbus A300 and A380 (Another exception to my preferences)

Example Airlines:
Pan American with blue stripe and globe emblem.
BOAC gold speedbird.
South African Airways with blue cheatline and orange tail.
Old Air Rhodesia (horizontal blue stripes on tail).
BEA Red Square
United Airlines 1968 colors
EL AL Turquoise and Dark Blue stripe
Old QANTAS orange stripe and red tail
SWISSAIR Red stripe and white cross (especially DC-10-30 delivery colors
KLM most of their old and current colors

I really do not like almost all modern airline colors !

Also I have some rare Verkuyl KLM models. And those were only done with fictitious registrations. So you'd miss out on stuff like that if you only get "real" regs.

I collect flown on planes (Airline & Air Frame), not necessarily registration, though a bonus! Also I add the different air frame not flown on for these airlines (but not multiple registrations) that compliments this criteria.

I also collect seen Airline and Air Frame from when I was a kid and used to go to observation decks at airports.

Lastly, anything that interests me.

I try to collect a model of each passenger and cargo aircraft built since the second war, including all versions (for example, 737 from 100 to MAX-9).
I try not to repeat the same airline, but I confess that I love it and prefer the Brazilian VARIG.

So far I have counted 177 models, from the Junkers JU-52 to the 777-9.

However, not all are produced in 1:200 (so far I have found 143 possible models, but I have already acquired 113, since 2009).

This in one of my favorite topics and it seems to come up fairly often.

My criteria is:
Commercial Aircraft
If I have flown on it... (correct livery is fine doesn't have to be exact reg #)
If I have touched it... (prototype 747, 787 or Concorde on display)
If it has significant sentimental value (Tanker 10 that fought CA wildfires in 18)
If my surfboard has flown on it (UPS MD 11, 757)

For Military:
Basically anything in 1/200 that is cool....(plus I am almost at full capacity on commercial)

I find that keeping to a criteria keeps me from purchasing way too much and its fun to solve dilemmas like a certain model needing to me custom made (UAL 767-400)

Well I was going to say Happy Australia Day but it's too late this year. The other thing I was going to say was welcome to the forum, however, that doesn't seem to happen anymore either.

Firstly welcome to the forum and enjoy. This year, I am going back to my grass roots and getting any VH registered models only. As Qantas turns 100 this year, hopefully there might be releases like KLM models came out in 2019! Running out of room I am afraid and need more display cabinets. That's my forecast for 2020 let's see what pans out.

I started collecting some 24 years ago, Western Models was one of the only players, I also remember Aero Mini, different scales ...

Very quickly, a few other manufacturers came to the market, most of them being cottage industry.
I bought a lot of models of various airlines.
i am still very happy with what i bought but now, I focus on my airline and when I don't find what I am looking for on the retailer shelves, I try to make my own models using donors or plastic kits.

My collecting criteria is Air France models first but I am very selective, if one of them does not meet my expectations, I don't buy it.
Paraphrasing Robert, I would say "I buy what I like and I don't buy what I don't like".

That said, if one day, an exceptional and accurate model of a B 367-80 or PAN AM B 707-120, short fin, no ventral fin sees the light of day, i will be one of the very first to buy it.

Happy collecting.

Jean Pierre.

I collect planes I have worked with and/or flown on, and I collect vintage Canadian airliners. I’m particularly interested in stuff that has worked in northern Canada.

Boeing 747's for life I don't mind what brand but usually the common well known once like these:

JC Wings
Inflight 200
Gemini 200
J-Fox
ARD Models UK
Aviation 200
BBOX

Mainly 1:200 B747's from those companies are just nice
it would be nice if IF-200, J-Fox & ARD would use the same wing mounting method JC Wings, Gemini 200 & BBOX use, but guess making a new mold for that would cost them too much so that is understandable, yet it would be nice and great if JC Wings like Gemini 200 & BBOX would do more classic liveries, but hey I guess you can't have everything

They all have minor mistakes and I accept that they are made by people after all.

The B747's I collected are ones I have flown with or family& friends have flown with or worked with, maintained, test flew or even flew on as captains and co-pilots, flight attendants to ground crew.
As owner of the Boeing 747 Community I have a wide range of people that are connected to my B747 fleet.

Great topic for discussion. It's always interesting seeing what criteria others have.

As for me, I'm mainly into aircraft and liveries that appeal to me or provide an artistic perspective. I love all new and old, and especially special liveries. More importantly, I'm a fan of the Queen of the skies, so my ultimate goal is to collect as many 747s that I can manage to carry. I also try to get models of planes that I've flown on without paying too much attention to the reg number.

I'm just a fan of aviation and will collect til the end.

Stuff I've flown on is a 100% guarantee I'll buy. Most of the other stuff in my collection I have specific reasons for (worked on or something) and I also have some that I just liked. But I've really cut back on the just because and sold a lot. I'm a big TWA fan but really twin stripes as that's what I remember when I was flying them as a kid. I used to have every final scheme made but sold all of those and kept the 747 only.

Due to limited space, For 1:200, I only collect narrow body aircraft not more than the size of A321. I love my 737s and A219s, also some ATR and Dash.. it must be local airlines as well.

Oh yeah for Military I mainly collect MiG-29 Fulcrums but I do have a pair of Su-35's, one is the prototype the other is the production model, and a Lockheed Martin F-35A from the Royal Netherlands Air Force with a Lockheed Martin F-22A Raptor from the United States Air Force for reference to compare to the Fulcrums but also they are just cool designs.

Always hoping that some company would do a diecast 1:72 Northrop YF-23 A Black Widow II and the Lockheed Martin, General Dynamics YF-22A Lightning II, can always have hopes for those right

Everything is 1:72 and I also do SST's which are diecast and at scale 1:200 just like my B747's are, mainly Tupolev Tu-144's & Concorde's still a shame never released SST's were made like the Lockheed L-2000-7, Tupolev Tu-244 or the Boeing 2707 series.

It has to be;

1. Die cast construction,
2. Pad printed graphics (airline livery, stencils, etc),
3. It has to be in 1:200 scale,
4. An accurate representation (not a toy, or look a like copy), of an airplane that I like and enjoy.

If these conditions are met, then the model will be considered for purchase.
