Yes, the Blue does have powers. That is it.

For me the 90's livery with the large dark blue cheat line and gold accents does have special powers. It is the best airline livery of all time IMO.
I've never flown KLM, but was able to drool over their 747's at our local airport.
And yes, I am superficial
I think its the gin in the Dutch houses they give you when you fly in business class. Some kind of elixir that makes you part of the Cult of KLM.
Lol. I've never flown KLM, but just had to add one in my collection. I reckon it's something to do with the royalty factor. I liken it to the same feeling I get when I see a BA Landor.

I do think it has something to do with being one of the only major airlines left that doesn't have a mostly Eurowhite livery - the NW Bowling Shoe gets a lot of love for the same reason.
Blue also seems to be high on the list of most peoples favorite color, so I think that factors in as well.
And then one of my personal favorite traits is that they name all their aircraft - so whereas with most carriers I'm content to collect one example of each livery, I can't stop collecting all the different named aircraft of KLM.

Funny I never really thought about that even though KLM has many firsts (and one last) for me; My first flights for the following were with KLM; DC-8-70, 747 (-300, -400/Combi- I was seated on the last row and about 6 hours into cruising, we can hear some of the horses neighing and this very pretty horse groom flying with them went to the hold I guess to calm the horses. I was so tempted to go in the hold with her but did not want to get off in LAX on handcuffs)-, A330-200-sometime after take off, the pilot announced that in a few minutes, a KLM 777 will be flying just below us on her way to Vancouver. What a glorious sight! Where was my camera?!!-. KLM CityHoppers-Fokker 28,50,70,100, Embraer 190. And the last MD-11 flight from YUL to AMS.

Youve been on a lot of KLM flights! I think it also has to do with their 100 years anniversary this year, and of course that wonderful blue colors
Except for the DC-8 which I flew as a teenager from AMS to ATH in 1982, all the other flights were work related. I started my cruise ship career on Holland America Line, specifically on the SS Rotterdam which is now a hotel in where else, Rotterdam.
Wow, nice! Stayed on the ss Rotterdam numerous times since she is a hotel. Followed that ship since she was layed up at the Bahamas. Glad she made it home and has a secure future now. Am a cruise ship lover and sailed on HAL ships as a passenger since 2008. Are you still with HAL? Know this is off topic but have to ask...

That is on my bucket list to stay on the SS Rotterdam hotel. I hope next year. I worked on almost all the "Dam" ships as a Piano headliner/entertainer. Recently i have been doing a lot of Seabourn. I think, still on the subject (KLM/Models), in the late 80's, I met a captain on one of the ships (Capt. Menke, I think) who was an avid collector of diecast airliners (his father was a captain for KLM in the 30's to 50's). I still remember vividly when He invited me to his office and showed me a couple of big, all metal beauties that in those days, manufacturers I never knew existed: KLM Connie made by Raise Up, a KLM DC-6 by Verkuyl and a very big C-5 with a red cheatline with a big "Galaxy " printed on the front part, also by Verkuyl. Plus he had an album of pictures of his many different collections. Ah, to see those models again!
Must have been very nice to see those classic models! Especially the connie and dc6.

With KLM being so popular, I am very surprised that Aeroclassics never made a 1/400 Viscount or DC-7C in this 1960s scheme. All we got was a Viscount in the delivery scheme and a DC-7C freighter in the later KLM scheme.

Indeed you are right! I remember commenting to my cousin that the engines on the DC-8 look like long straight tubes as compared to the TAP 707 which we passed by during taxiing.

My story with KLM is my dad worked for them in the 50s-60s and my mother is Dutch. Grew up flying on all the vintage propliners on through the DC-8s and -9.
My last flight with them was probably early 70s, but will always have a fondness for the airline.

Got to fly on KLM 767-300 from IAD to Amsterdam back in early 2002 on my way to Africa. It is the gin in the little houses, the magic of the blue, great service, and Stroopwafels!
My records show only two KLM Viscounts got painted with horizontal tail stripes, before the fleet got sold to Aer Lingus. They were all in the 'diagonal tail stripes' scheme throughout the 1960s.

Livery first and foremost as others have said. There are certain liveries that I remember seeing as a child and really liking them for some inexplicable reason, especially for having not flown them. KLM, Lufthansa, Singapore Airlines to name a few... are airlines that I have soft spots for and tend to collect. KLM is appealing to me for its colors, simple as that.

Even though the Viscounts flew at KLM for only 9 years, from 1957 until 1967, it just so happened they flew around in three different liveries.

That's what I remember as a kid flying on them. Still would like that livery though.

You see the transition from the 1971 white top livery, via the '80 light blue (most likely PMS 2985) to the current shade of blue defined as PMS 299C. To me, by far the most attractive livery in the skies!

I do not have Dutch blood in me, several reasons though why KLM is one of my FAVES!!!
Love the color schemes, the names of the planes, LOVED the MD-11 as it held special meaning to me as it was the very first plane my daughter saw close up back in 2013.
Also, stupid reason now, my initials are LMK, lol KLM is close enough

My first aviation job was as cabin staff on Air UK F27s back in the early 80s, so did a great many sectors from UK to Amsterdam. Sometimes we’d have a two hour turnaround at SPL. When we did I used to go to a shop under the terminal, near the railway station I think, I could be wrong about that, long time ago. I think the shop was called Drugstore, and it sold models of various sizes. It was there that I first encountered push fit airliner models, of which I bought many! I imagine that the shop has gone by now. Those were happy days indeed

Throwback talks here! My first models are also from the Drugstore down the basement at Schiphol. In fact it was a tunnel between the terminal and the underground railway station. This railway station consisted of a round glass building in front of the terminal and a underground connection with the arrival hall.
The area above ground was demolished in 1995 and rebuild als the current Schiphol Plaza. Still with the underground railway station, but without the tunnel. The shop you mention was replaced several times and since 2006 it is in a central place at Plaza (landslide). An DC-10 engine cowling, DC-10 main landing gear bogie and an DC-9 nose section, including cockpit, is open for the public as an eye catcher and nowadays the shop is called 'Planes@Plaza'. Nevertheless, is no longer the place be for the enthusiast. In this they have been out performed by the LHS.

Yup, I know that one Marc. Built it myself ten years ago ;-)
The thing back then was that I had no exact map of the interior. Now I have much more information, only to find out that this probably differed per plane, until KLM standardized the interior to all over blue during 'The blue wave' (1985). When the PH-BUA was delivered, each compartment had its own color (from a 1971 advertisement: "Gold of sunlight for Royal Class, gay reds, blues, greens and soothing fawn for our Economy travellers'). Shortly after the introduction of the 747, the interior designers resorted the colorful chairs to the principles of famous Dutch designer Gerrit Rietveld: the colorful seats were divided into groups over the compartments to break the 'tube effect' of the huge cabin.
And if I do accept the challenge of recreating the 70's cabin, than it should be up to the detail!.

It could just simply be, 100 years of service to a nation, the world, KLM cities destinations that they have served, and the aviation history that goes with it. All manufactures are releasing their models of KLM in their centenary year, and why not. Great to see.
The shop is indeed gone Neil. See earlier imput from VJ.
A smaller shop returned in the current shopping centre just before you reach check-in, but it is not nearly as focussed on model aircraft as the 1980's shop.
The old shop was great indeed..still miss that shop. The current shop is nothing more then a toy shop imo...

Sorry, I missed your reply. I thought perhaps it was gone by now. As you say, there’s LHS nowadays with its incredible selection of models. I still think the Drugstore had a special character to it, or am I remembering it through ‘rose coloured spectacles’ Either way, as I type this I’m looking at my IMC 1/100 Cimber ATR42 which came from there along with several others. Sadly they didn’t sell any Air UK F27s! I’ve also got a 1/200 KLM 747 which came pre painted in a KLM branded box, but you had to apply the water slide decals yourself. Looked like a Long Prosper model and once the decals were applied it looked really good.

Seeking any KLM expert here, why does KLM only painting their red warning dots under the 744 flaps on the right hand side, but not on the left, plus the red line on engine no 4?
