Default Qantas 747-438 VH-OJU - Goodbye

With every new Qantas 787-9 arrival it signals the end for a Qantas 747-438. Today, Qantas said goodbye to VH-OJU when it did it's last passenger service.

Good news is that this aircraft has a reprieve and not getting chopped up anytime soon. Qantas sold this aircraft to Rolls Royce who took delivery today

RR acquired this aircraft which was delivered in 2000, it had 92 000 hours and some 9 400 cycles.

This aircraft is part of a $ 70 million investment covering the acquisition of the aircraft and its conversion as a flying testbed.

Yeah QF has all their four B747-438ER's still in service, dunno for how long tho, would be cool to see one of them with the QANTAS 1000 Years livery as a final ride out and an other in the Ochre Livery, something like that would be super cool

Two things Goldie, Qantas purchased six 747-438ERs VH-OEE, -OEF, -OEG,-OEH, OEI & the second Wanala Dreaming -OEJ. Qantas still has these in service but, I have since found out today that Qantas took delivery of two 787-9's from Boeing this week VH-ZNI & VH-ZNJ. OEE must be next.

oh of course , was a mistype QF bought six B747-438ER's yeah of course rofl.
Sadly VH-OEJ will be the last in service to the bitter end, way too early to retire a B747 design from 2002 that being the B747-400ER formerly known as B747-400X.

They should keep their ER's in service to like 2032 or so , they can easily pull that off hence their superior design, B747's were made to last long lives without little maintenance needs.

It sickens me to see more companies getting rid of young ages B747-400's or B747-400ER for that part, people can be stupid at times if I have to be honest.. sigh.

Don't know if they all will be made into beer cans, but age is less of a concern as the accounting results that usually will demonstrate a twin-engined aircraft outperform (fuel-wise) a four-engined aircraft - taking into account distance, passenger demand, sortie frequency, etc...
All this enters the algorithm that determines whether to buy/sell/lease/retire a particular hull.

Absolutely true and the ETOPS rules killed the A 340 which was unable to compete with the excellent B 777.

Yes very true JP and Qantas was a big participant with the 777 program and still to date not one order by them for the 777 aircraft. Something about four engines gives piece of mind over water.

This picture brings back to my mind good memories ...
Vertical spacing 1000 feet ...

It is also true that all the economic aspects aside four engines for long transpacific crossings is much more comfortable.

No sorry required Willy, I agree it's time. Anything between VH-EBA --- VH-OEJ would be great!
