Default Airline "Theme" Collections?

Do any of you have themed collections revolving around specific airlines or airports? Do you incorporate other memorabilia, travel posters, tickets, safety cards, etc, into your displays? Would you care to share with the class?

I guess my theme is prewar airlines that pioneered early routes. I collect Air France, Imperial Airways, Qantas, and Pan American. As for memorabilia, I collect airline lapel pins and pocket knives.

That's a very cool collection. Is the emphasis on the early aircraft, or the full-evolution of those airlines?

My themes, if you call them that, are based on favorite schemes and then some airlines that have a prominent connection to Denver. United, for one, used to be a big hub for Denver and had a training center at the old Stapleton Airport. Frontier is big here and at one time (still may be) was based in Denver, so I have several of their planes. With each of those I have not focused on fleets, but rather different planes and liveries. All my United planes have a different livery for example.

Frontier is still based in Denver, yes. I’ve got some United models too. I used to do ground handling for them in Vancouver.

I used to have a big 400 scale collection and I had a ton of Canadian stuff, but the biggest part of that was the Air Canada collection.

Only theme I really have in 200 scale is planes that mean something to me/stuff that would come to my airport. Oh, and Westjet since I work for them I want all I can get for them

Sort of. I worked with Air California, so I have a collection of most of the airlines that served SNA back in the 80's. Still missing a few. As I also worked for American, I have a lot of AA models as well as Air Cal, but do not limit my collection to those. I also have been on a 747 kick the last year, and those boxes are taking up a lot of storage room!!

I only collect KLM's different aircraf types, used from its inauguration date in 1919 until current. 1:200 scale only. Current and some older types mostly from the shelf. Very old types often custom made. Sometimes I make a missing model myself.

Tell me about it!! My favorite airframe is the 747, and I am hellbent on collecting as many unique Queens as I can. Needless to say, I have a major storage issue, LoL

I’ve collected Egyptair, Finnair, Interflug and JAT. This includes models, posters, tickets, key rings etc. In the case of Egyptair I’ve also some Limoges Egyptian style pottery. I presume they were made as gifts for first or business passengers. Each item has ‘Presented with the compliments of Egyptair’ on it.

My father worked for KLM when I was a kid. So a lot of what I collect revolves around KLM and the other airlines we flew on in the 50s, 60s and 70s (AF, AA, AZ, BA, BE, SK, SR, UA, CO, etc).

Nowadays I fly mostly Lufthansa internationally. So I have a pretty good collection of their modern stuff. But do have an L1049G, B727-100, B720B and B737-200 of theirs as well. They go well with the KLM 60s fleet.

I primarily buy what I've been on but I have some other criteria too. I try to keep stuff that I just flat out like without another reason to a minimum.

My theme is straight forward.... If I have flown on it, boarded it or touched it, then it goes into my collection. I also include parcels that have flown on a particular plane which opens up a couple of UPS and FedEx planes for me. It keeps things interesting for me and my company travel agent always wants to know why a particular plane is so important to me. An example is that I flew from Orlando to SFO last May via Newark so I could get "credit" for a 787-10 which I promptly added to my collection.

That's more or less what my collection is too. That and vintage Canadian airliners. My latest acquisition is Gemini200's Alaska Airlines Boeing 737-400 in the "Salmon-Thirty-Salmon" colours (G2ASA175). I flew on N792AS between Vancouver and Seattle while travelling to Kona three years ago. It was no longer wearing the salmon, but it was the same aircraft. I also have the "More To Love" 737-900 because I flew on that plane from Portland to Los Angeles en route to Kona two years ago. Good memories associated with nice models.

My favourites in my collection are definitely registrations I have flown on. I also have a handful of registrations I have worked on as a ramp agent or an aircraft refueller. However, sometimes I'll buy a model of a type/airline/livery that I have flown on regardless of registration. For example, I just flew Aeromexico for the first time last month when I went to Costa Rica. I wanted to have a memory of that trip in my collection so I bought Gemini's Aeromexico 737-800 with scimitars. I didn't fly on XA-AMK, but that's ok. I'm tempted to buy an Air Canada 777-300ER in the previous livery too. The actual registration I flew on is available in 1/400, but I am purging my 1/400 collection and sticking to 1/200.

Airlines with the particular air frame that I flew on. Registration is not a necessary requirement, but nice if is the exact one flown on! Mainly American, Pan Am, TWA, United, Eastern, Delta. I do mix in accessories with the display of planes, such as; pilot wings, safety cards/printed paper, ashtrays, china, and other airline related items. I also collect airlines from different continents I like or have seen in the past that reminds me of my travels.

Great move to get rid of your 1:400s. I enjoy the hobby more with 1:200. After awhile the 1:400s just become noise and are too toy-like in my opinion.

I started to collect scale 1/200 with YU- registration priority. A few months after realising that this was tougher than expected (especially when ypou want good moulds), i switched to the "buy-what you like-attitude".

For 1:200, this is pretty much my criteria as well. I started off wanting at least one of each type in 1:200 but even that started to eat up space quickly. I also used to have a bunch of L-1011's because it's my favorite aircraft, but I've whittled those down somewhat - still have a BA Landor, Cathay Pacific and a couple of Easterns that don't count as "flown on" but I can't quite part with those yet. Also a Pan Am 707 since it's an icon of the jet age, and the Iron Maiden jets because - I mean, come on, Maiden!

New 1:200 acquisitions have to pass the "been on it" test though. 1:400? Well that's a whole 'nother story

Thumbs up Re: Airline "Theme" Collections?

I have a modest Air France collection with a modest amount of books devoted to the subject. The choice of models collected demonstrates Air France's very advanced aircraft used.

I also have a modest collection of Canadian Pacific Airlines aircraft that ranges 1955-1965. One is in 1:144, and the other slow growing one in 1:200 (long story). Anyhow I have some rather VERY rare paraphernalia directly pertaining to the CPA Bristol Britannia. In addition some minty-mint lighters and very hard to get early 60's ashtrays.

To keep sanity, and financial soundness I only collect in these areas.

I love this thread, so interesting to compare criteria.
My collecting criteria was one of every western, 100 seat plus jet airliner. Taking into account how much display space I had available would mean not collecting sub types. I try to pick major operators of the type whilst also trying to collect airlines from all around the world. I've made a couple of exceptions for aircraft that have been made for so long that the difference between first to last is large, ie. 737, this allows me to shoehorn in another airline which I would like to have.
I've also recently obtained a TU-154, so Soviet aircraft have gotten my attention lately. WE NEED AN IL-62!

+1 on the “flown on it” category. Type and livery must match, registration is a bonus if it happens.

Given that meant I had a lot of BA, I expanded to BA and ancestors/ related fleets. One of every livery (and world tail) on one of every type.

I love the paraphernalia, lighters and ashtrays addition! Good catch from the original post. I love hearing what people display their collections WITH - not just the criteria for which models they buy. Beauty!

Because I work for American, my collection centers around AA. I have a collection of aircraft spanning the history of the airline in 1/200, starting with the DC-3 and ending with the 777-300 and 787. Because I grew up in upstate NY, I also have every Mohawk and Allegheny release which ironically ended up merging with American, plus a few USAir models in the triple red scheme. I’m not a fan of the merger, so I don’t have any US Airways or America West models.

Being of French-Canadian descent, and having visited Montréal countless times to visit family, I have a good number of Air Canada models, in various liveries. I pretty much like every livery they’ve had.

British Airways is AA’s biggest and most important joint business partner, so I also collect BA and its predecessors, BOAC and BEA. I have a few Pan Am models in my collection that I wouldn’t ever part with, they were such an iconic airline.

I also have numerous timetables, pilot and flight attendant wings, promotional pins, some glassware, china, flatware, luggage tags and other sundry items from the above mentioned carriers to complement the collection.

I did have to narrow my collection criteria because it was getting out of hand, so gone from my collection are Delta, United, Iberia, EasyJet, JetBlue, Air France, Japan Airlines, among others. I decided to keep my three Southwest models, I just have the 737-700s in the Canyon Blue and Heart liveries, and a 737 Max in the Heart livery, because I know I’m weird, but I like their paint jobs.

Nice thread! For me it is difficult to draw a thick line of what to collect and what not but I have to be more strict in the future as space runs out. I sold off all other scales but 1:200 and a few 1:100. Airlines I collect in order of importance (to me);

Europe:

1. KLM and daughters Martinair and Transavia
2. Lufthansa and other German airlines like LTU and DHL
3. Sabena classic livery
4. Air France
5. BOAC and a bit British Airways
6. Swiss(air)
7. Few SAS but stopped collecting them

USA;

1. Delta airlines
2. Pan Am(erican)
3. United
4. FedEx
5. American Airlines
6. UPS
7. TWA (only classic/twintig globe)

Other Airlines;

1. Few Qantas (5)
2. Few South African Airlines (3)
3. Few JAL (3)
4. Few Emirates (2)

And for the rest planes I flew on and a fleet of factory house colors from Airbus, Boeing, Douglas (MDD)
and a few one offs.....
