Default Air Force One's experimental livery of 1962

Inflight's model of 86970
Product number #IF137USAF0518P VC-137B

The current Air Force One livery looks the way it does because President John F Kennedy sat on the floor of the Oval Office with an industrial designer Raymond Loewy with, scissors, paper and crayons or so this is what I have found out so far. I have managed to find one of the original drawings too.

It was May 1962, and the Air Force had already ordered a Boeing C-137 Stratoliner for the president. The airplane could fly anywhere in the world on half-hour notice. It carried as many as eight crew members and 40 passengers, and had a range of 6,000 miles. The Air Force had designed a red-and-fold color scheme for the plane, a modified long-range Boeing 707. Raymond Loewy owned the largest design firm in New York. First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy, with her sense of style, lobbied the president to hire the French-born Mr Loewy and he met with the president twice. The first time the two met, he and Kennedy sat on the floor of the Oval office drawing with crayons on paper cutting & pasting and coming up with with a livery for the new Air Force One that was to be delivered soon. Then Loewy visited the National Archives to examine historic documents. He was struck by the first printed copy of the Declaration of Independence; it had the new country's name set widely spaced in capital letters in a typeface known as Caslon font. This was also applied to the the titles "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA". The redish or orange dayglo was dropped as it was considered too aggressive, while the rest of the livery was kept for the two future specially modified first VC - 137C's Presidential transports SAM 62-6000 (delivered October 1962) & followed 10years later by 72-7000, remains still the same livery today on the USAF's VC-25A's

A sample drawing artwork that was very closely applied to , but not completely as you can see to 58-6970. A full size mock up experiment trial paint scheme. A calibration of JFK's and Mr Loewy's interpretation of this concept.

Very interesting. I have to say that I prefer the Orange to the Blue, but the hybrid looks pretty good too.

Sure Denis no problem

Inflight's VC-137C 26000 and VC-137B 86970

Aero Classics made a VC-135 on their 720 mould it's the first top left behind the MATS. It sure doesn't really make the cut for a VC-135 it's too small

inflight's VC-135B and Areo classics 720 passing it off as a VC-135B same tail number of the same aircraft.

Steve thanks to show us all the details this fine 707-120B has . That said I wish all the IF 200 707s could be framed as this one . I am tempted to buy it since I saw your pictures .
