Default Orbital L-1011, Rejected by Retailers in Japan

After an extremely long wait since announcement, the Inflight 200, Orbital ATK L-1011 model, finally arrived at the Japanese retailer (including my brother's store) this past week. Unfortunately, all the models from the various Japanese retail stores we contacted, has been rejected for defects and returned to the Japanese distributor.

Defects includes missing antennas (lower), rocket decal/paint smearing etc. We contacted our friends at Top Gun in Tokyo, who probably stock and pre-order the largest amount of Inflight model and they too have rejected all the Orbital ATK models they received (they did inform us, that one customer purchased the model with the defect).

The Japanese retailers has been informed by the Japanese Distributor, that "NO" replacement models (or even just the missing or defective parts) will be available to the retailers and all orders for this model, has been canceled.

This message is to alert those of you who have it on order in other countries, to please check with your purchasing source, to inspect the model, prior to mailing it to you.

As a side note, for those who wonder why doesn't the Japanese retailers just accept the model as-is, and discount the models with just the missing antennas? Historically, models with defects (even the smallest ones), will require the models to be discounted from 40% - 70%. But more importantly, for the Japanese buyers, retailers selling defective models even at a discount with full disclosure, often earn a bad reputation and distrust among the consumers for all their product lines. Hence, most retailers (unless they are completely stuck and unable to return the models to the distribution or manufacturing source) will return the models, rather than risking their reputation.

Picture of the model is from eBay.

That's poor quality control in inflights factory. So the whole batch can be thrown away?

Not sure what the Japanese distributor will do with them. Perhaps send it back to the factory or dumped at a second hand outlet shop which handles defective products? Perhaps fixed back at the factory and then re-released? Not sure, but it's been canceled here in Japan by the major retailers.

I’ve noticed that Aviation Center Berlin deleted the model immediately from its website’s online retail shop upon delivery from the distributor. There are two common reasons for such an immediate deletion:

1. No more availability due to high amount of orders exceeding number of models in stock;
2. No longer available due to unacceptable defects of the delivered models.

Since ACB is very tolerant concerning the acceptance of defective models, I guess it was simply sold out upon delivery. As soon as collectors start returning their defective models to ACB, the model might be re-listed for sale again. “If one customer does not accept a models for quality reasons, maybe the next collector does”.

In addition to the OrbitalATK L-1011, the PSA L-1011 was also deleted from the shop’s website. Any shortages in quality apparent for the PSA release? In
contrast to those two, the Lockheed/BEA Demonstrator L-1011 is still available upon initial availability.

Contact Don at Jetstreams USA as he may get some and sell them as B stock models at shows as he has done in the past! I also think his daughter, Jodi lists defective models on Ebay from time to time.

I applaud Japan's stance. Bravo!
