Default OMEN: Maybe itís time for me to quit ..

As some of you may know I recently put out a request looking for a Gemini 200 Northwest Orient 757 and I am going to copy the link to that thread here..well today I was going through my closet and found a mint in the box one that I had all along and totally forgot that I acquired last fall..

So the question is, when is it enough? I don’t keep spreadsheets or data other then some pics of my collection.. At one time my collection was several thousand models all scales but now down to about 500 1/200 models and a about a dozen others..

It scares me to know that I am that careless to not even know what I own..this is not the first time as recently I was in the hunt for another model and put my feelers out there but luckily caught it in time that I already had it..To fight my loosing my mind I do crossword puzzles and I nail 1/2 the jeopardy questions nightly including getting final jeopardy right about 80% of the time, but it looks like I’m totally senile and showing signs of Alzheimer’s or Dimentia!

I just bought one without the box from a fellow DACer and will take a loss if anyone is interested pm me...it is a very very rare model..

By the way here is that thread and based on some wise a** comments from the peanut gallery about how they will never let go of theirs they can all kiss my a** lol lol lol
https://www.diecastaircraftforum.com...ent-757-a.html

Here are pics of my treasure hunt closet find..

Hi Russell Ive done the reverse, I had the Gemini Lufthansa B747-800 retro livery
and sold it with out thinking only to realise it was part of my Lufthansa collection
I only have a collection of the previous livery the all white blue tail fin with the yellow circle while sorting them out and dusting them my brain went dead, I thought to my self why did I have this particular model when it was not the livery I collected then realised it was the retro livery they did for this fleet at the time, so I had to by the Herpa version to replace it, as it is now impossible to find another Gemini, all my models are now listed by Airline, Livery, And Registration number.

Nice stories....and in a way somewhat of a luxury problem
My collection is not even 100 planes big and collecting goes very slowly, but I do keep a spreadsheet. Even then, it's very handy to keep track of registrations, make and model, what to trade in and what not, what's on order and the years in service (in my case with KLM).
Nevertheless, I admire your collecting skills and the collections you've put together.

I wouldn't feel to bad Russ. (Sure am glad I spent about an hour checking and looking ) I have done the exact same thing. I caught it before I put out a request. Found it in a tub in my secondary storage area. What you did is so EASILY done. You have models come and go. You just simply forgot you had it. Don't even think about packing in the hobby. You enjoy it to much.

I don't have the luxury of being able to afford much of what I'd like to. I suppose that's a blessing? But if/when I do purchase a new model, I would be so thrilled because that would mean I have another beautiful subject to photograph. So, in essence, my love for photography is kind of a way to archive what I have while also enjoying my hobby that much more.

Sadly, the medication I take makes me a bit forgetful at times but photos don't lie. Plus photography is a great hobby in itself. You should try it, CV. Get yourself a free online photo account and upload photos of all of your models. You can even group them any way you wish.

Which reminds me to get off my aging a** and start shooting again.

P.S. I'm thrilled that you found your diamond in the rough! Some would say you are a "closet collector" hahaha.

Russ congratulations on your acquisition...whenever it occurred!

I've done the same thing several times over. I have a few duplicates because of this brain issue thing! Welcome to the club! My brain issues came on a little earlier. Next time I see you, you can sneak some of my Namenda XR or Aricept, unless I forget to bring it!

Maybe you just need a break? you can always get back to it if the time is right for you, never try to see this collecting thing as a must do in your life, it's something you are supposed to enjoy, hence the reason for doing this kind of hobby.

As for that NWO B747-251 that is indeed a nice find alright, maybe the larger a collection gets the tend to lose oversight on what you actually have?

I had this when I collected graphics cards had over 800 at some point....
Here the galleries of the best and rarest ones I had, promo & Engineering Samples included:
Previous VGA cards

3dfx, ATi/AMD, NVIDIA were my main brands I collected from and S3, Matrox & Power VR were added for reference:
some cards I had later were added here
My Current VGA's

Some thumbnails don't show but the bigger pics do work.

Overtime I too lost oversight in what I had I didn't know what to do at some point sold a few then had regrets then sold more and eventually around in 2018 I sold the very last pieces and went fully on to collecting Boeing 747's but I did put myself toa limit orsay a certain amount once reaching that I'd stop and try something else.

Variation is good for many things but taking a break can also be of help when it comes to such situations, it surely helped me and maybe you need a break and come back at some later time or just be happy on what you have keep your best and faved models and maybe sell the ones you'd think you could do without thereby creating more breathing space for yourself.

Since the Brain storm with the Lufthansa RETRO B747-800, I now have all my models logged on DIMA, and in file's in case the computer crashes and I loose everything, what I have done is to copy the page from the DIMA site, then also taken a photo of the model, then on the reverse side put a picture of the real Aircraft.

Definitely time for you to get out of the game CV. Pack up all your models and ship them to me. I will look after them.

Seriously though, I had a similar situation over the last couple of months. I bought a set of decals for some customs I was planning. I could have sworn that I took them to my weekend place as that’s where I do the custom work. I searched high and low, but to no avail. So, I bough a second set. These too were apparently placed in a “safe place”. The 3rd set arrived and were used to make the Bennyhone 747 and Waves of the City DC-10

This week at work, I opened my drawer to find one of the other sets. So, this weekend, I dug out the box for the donor model to see if I could complete the Benyhone DC-10 that I started in 2017. Guess what was in the box with the model......

Anyone need decals?

Funny, i just hung up the phone with a long time DACer who was actively looking for a Gemini 757 and he too put out his feelers and when he looked at his display cabinet, guess what...there she sat. He had Fed Ex confused with UPS....And I have 10 years on this guy...So I am feeling much better now!

I am putting the NWA 757 I bought by mistake up for sale on 200 scale for sale forum for a loss...Go for it!!

Címon Russ, youíre fine. Imagine when that happens to you with a 1/100 767! I was horrified at the time, but I chuckle to myself about it now.

I have mine cataloged in Excel which includes location in my house. Been known to purchase a movie, CD or concert video that is already in the collection though.

Probably need to put them in a spread as well. Had a great online database that would auto populate meta data, actors, personnel etc., but the owner stopped updating it.

As you should. In my defence, I have a very substantial collection, and it was in its anonymous looking cardboard box in the attic. I came across it during my house move four years ago. I really was surprised and very pleased when I came across it. I canít remember where I bought it from. I donít think Space Models 1/100 Royal Air Maroc 767-300s are that common. Now whyís my sugar bowl in the fridge?......

Welcome to my World. Lately, I have been leaving a majority of my newest models still in their respective boxes (EXPO A340-600 included) and the other day I was looking around for it only to find it after 20 minutes still in the box on my couch. :/ Alzheimers and Dementia does run in my family, and I have found my short term memory is bad, but I can remember things from 40 years ago. So, go figure :/

I remember a Wall Street Journal article of many many years ago when I was in my 30s. It was talking about people my age at the time worrying about forgetting things. It was because we have so much information in our brains. And that just because we forget once in awhile doesn’t mean we’re on the road to dementia. That’s my story and I’m sticking to it 😎

Guys,

I know it's being lighthearted a little bit about the dementia and Alzheimers. But it's normal to maybe forget that you have a model in a large collection. But you still know it's a NWA Boeing 757. When you look at a model and you have no idea what it is or used for is dementia or Alzheimers

I had some construction done in my apartment and I had to pack away a lot of models. After the work was done, I couldnít remember what was where, nor what was in each box. And my collection is about 150 models, tops. So donít feel bad!

Oh man! I had this very thing happen to me with the Gemini200 Lufthansa Retro 747-8. I had inadvertently purchased two at separate times and completely forgot about one that went in the "keep absolutely mint" corner of my closet . Found it months later after doing some reorganizing and was ecstatic to say the least as it is extremely hard to come by now

I think the time to quit is when you run out of space to display your models, so they are hidden away in boxes unseen. If they were all on display, you would know what you have because it's seen and enjoyed.

I live in a small apartment in Manhattan. If I had all my models on display, thereíd be no room for furniture! If I ever move, Iíd love to have a house with a room to use as a study/library, and would have them all out.

Interesting topic here.Although I only have a rather small collection,60+ I only keep a photo of the ones Ive got together(or on pre order)together with a PDF file of all my invoices for them.
Does anyone have recommendations on a stand alone database or spreadsheet program specifically catering for our hobby?

Glad to see this thread as I did something similar for the first time after a decade of collecting. I ordered an NG TWA 757 when the retailers were having the big blowout sale because I knew I wanted it and had thought I had forgotten to buy it in my last pre-order. Come home to open my box from another pre-order from a month or two ago, and there is the TWA 757. I felt so bad and ridiculous (thankfully the retailer let me change my new order!).
