Default If the BA DC-10s had lasted a little longer..

As far as I know, BA had either retired, sold or transferred all of their DC-10s to the Caledonian division by the late 1990s - certainly by the year 2000.

(as an aside - if anyone has a Skyline Caledonian DC-10 (not British Caledonian) that they would be willing to part with - please PM me!)

There must have been 7 still in service in May 1999 at the time the fleet was listed in the High Life magazine (below). Rather than represent them in Landor as they were flying, BA chose to depict one of the World Tails that had been rolled out in 1997.

May 1999 BA high life magazine

(interestingly enough - they also depicted a 747 "classic" with a Rendezvous tail, even though none of the 747-100s carried the new livery and a few -200s did [XB with Union Flag, XD with Blue Poole/England, XG with Blomsterang/Sweden, XK with Chelsea Rose/England and XO with Paithani/India]. The A320 also never flew with the "Colours down the Side" livery as depicted either.)

In any case, I had a "spare" DC-10 and decided to have a go. My first attempt covered the tail more fully, as in the magazine, and used a smaller font for the BA titles, but it just did not look right, as I think the livery would have followed the shape of the tail in a more angular fashion. The titles also looked small after seeing the Air Liberte donor model.

So - here is v2. It needs a lot of work as I smudged a couple of windows and trim while removing the old printing, I have not yet replaced the door decals, the "USA" are crooked and the tail on one side needs some serious patching - but as I won't be able to get to that for a few months - here are the "in progress" shots.

I used V1 747 decals as the basis. Now that I know the possibilities, I will use a set of the V1 decals 747 Benyhone Tartan to finish up the other DC-10 "tribute to BCal" that I started but never finished.

As usual - a couple of shots with sister ships - one Landor and the other the Air Liberte that matches the donor model.

What do you guys think?

Looking good. Must be difficult applying decals on that tail engine

Total beauties! Now I know why I can't seem to part with my Landor DC-10 by Wooster in 1/250 with its way not so correct rubber tires and plastic struts that you buy from a third party and put them in the little holes that came with the Wooster mold. Those were the days.

Collecting BA's fleet must cost a fortune and what's not made by the manufactures, you make. Your BA fleet passion and decal skills with your customs are very nice John

Thanks... it’s an expensive hobby, but as my wife keeps tellling me, the more guilt I have about how much I spend, the better her presents are likely to be! In any case I have been really lucky with finding bargains, especially for donor models.

Awesome set these two BA-Douglas DC-10's and what a simple paintjob can do to an old airframe, especially this paintjob that made the retro DC-10 look like new again:

Fantastic custom modding

Given that BA acquired all of the DC-10s with the acquisition of British Caledonian, it is only fitting that the fantasy fleet gets a tribute Benyhone Tartan tail, particularly as British Caledonian planned to have a Tartan tail on a new livery.

Still a WIP as the decals, particularly on the left side, need work.

Forgot to add. Donor was another Air Liberte, Decals by V1 for the 744 trimmed to “fit”.
