Three engines, three generators, three hydraulic systems and maybe three air conditioning packs. Technically speaking, very comfortable. Jean Pierre. |

An MD-11 (or Tristar) 2.0! But seriously, I am not aware of developments in that direction. I can imagine the twin will be getting even bigger, but a new trijet would make the world a prettier place. |
Re: KLM 100 years
The B747-8i is actually the better option fuel efficient, fast, best long range and 4 GEnx-2B engines ( B787's use the GEnx 1B's btw )
Nothing beats the reliability of the B747 platform, that with a 50+ year history background, the B747-8 is still the best choice, well to me anyways, not one ran in to issues either, just like it's predecessor, it's yet again a fantastic design that gets the job done. 4 reliable engines is always safer than 2, no ways round it, B747's are made to last and are able to take off & land on much shorter runways than most of their large 2 engine competitors. They are still around for such reasons along side the ultra long range they have as well. Ideal to convert from freighter to PAX version and the other way around, the story of PH-MCF is a good example a Martinair Freighter which was leased to QANTAS Australia for 2 years s as PAX version, some people don't even know this, I do apparently  This aircraft is a Boeing 747-21AC/SCD, a rare case none the less. Cheaper isn't always better and cheaper isn't always safer either, I seen what MCAS can do and yeah well good luck with all of that I'm like. I never seen so many issues with aircraft when it comes to these new gen 2 engine based aircraft. Yes I am a B747 die-hard and the B747 will always be the be4est to me some may not agree that is their choice. Hereby I disagree to agree. when it comes to twins over quads, you'd also never see my flying ona 2 engine aircraft either if it ain't a B747, I'll stay on the ground thanks :envy: |

Personally I do agree on the love for 4 haulers. Completely from an aesthetic point of view, because the statement that 4 engines per definition is the safest option does not hold given the proven reliability of the current generation of two engine jet liners. Including the recently plagued 737. The accidents that occur can be traced back to causes outside the number of engines, such as CFIT, aircraft upset or simply an awkwardly designed computer system (and lack of proper training because the manufacturer 'forgot' to state the hook-up). Talking about the latter: here you have a point. At this moment Boeing shows that it is unwise only focus on revenue and that a money driven corporate culture does not ultimately lead to excellent performance. But wit a continuous flow of bankruptcies in commercial aviation (recently Germania, WOW, Aigle Azur, XL Airways, Privat Air, Small Planet and the last few days Adria and Thomas Cook) it may be clear that CFO's have an important vote in the purchase of aircraft and that their choice will be the most fuel-efficient aircraft. And both in terms of maintenance and in terms of consumption, two engines always beat three or four. Especially with the current tensions in the middle east and the imminent danger of sharply rising fuel prices. Returning to the topic of this thread: if KLM wants to exist for another hundred years, it will be an airline with a fleet entirely existing of twins. Three or four haulers (new propulsion systems such as electrification not considered) will increasingly become relics of the past. unfortunately, because I also love the Queen of the skies! Thankfully we still have the models... cheers VJ |

Since KLM turns 100 years old on October 7th 2019, I thought I 'd share some pictures of two custom made 1:200 scale aircraft in my collection.
The pictures reminded me of the advertisement KLM put out when it turned 60 years old in 1979. It showed a picture of one of the original Boeing 747's together with a Fokker F-II, KLM's first owned aircraft. In my pictures, the 747 is a Bader Models Boeing 747-206B SF SUD. I believe it is a one-off built, but maybe a few others are around. It's my only 747 with pitot tubes. PH-BUH was one of 10 aircraft KLM converted from the -200 series to the -300 series in 1990. This aircraft was converted once more in 1998 to a Special Freighter (SF). The Fokker is a one-off built F-XVIII, which KLM had in service from 1932 to 1946. It was built for me by Bell Air models and made mostly of perspex. KLM paid around EUR 31.000 per aircraft in 1930 and ordered a total of 5 of which PH-AIS was one. |

I love these old models telling the story of KLM ...
Happy Birthday KLM ! Jean Pierre. |
Re: KLM 100 years
Very nice models Maarlandair. Hope that if will make that cargo 747 sometime in the future. That little Fokker looks superb too.

My custom Fokker F-VIIa just arrived (first 3 pics).
The Fokker F-VIIa was in service from 1924 until 1937 at KLM. A total of 15 aircraft have been used, next to 5 F-VII's. I have included some pics together with earlier custom built Fokker F-II, Fokker F-VIII and Fokker F-XVIII. |

Your models are lovely !
I don't want to highjack your thread and I apologize if I am off topic. We share the same interest in old aircraft flown by our national airline. I attach a picture of some pre WWII AF aircraft, they are home made, I still have four resin castings waiting for my attention. The KLM DC 4 recently released by Herpa seems to be fantastically good. Jean Pierre. |
Re: KLM 100 years
Very nice classics Jean Pierre and Maarlandair. Beautiful additions to complete the early era of flying.
@Maarlandair; love those little Fokkers. Are they all custom made or are some available somewhere? |

The idea of these threads is mutual information and stimulation I think, so only happy that you gave it an AF swing. Beautuful aircraft you have made. I am not that skilled that I can make them from scratch myself, they are just too detailed and small. I also lack the correct decals to finish them and maybe a steady hand :D I have recently ordered the Fokker F-IX in resin however, so I will give it a try (again) at some point. There are just not may builders around in 1:200 scale who make these models. I like the idea that KLM's sister airline AF also has someone that shares my interest in these old classics. Looking forward to read more about your building progress. Marc |

All models are custom made. The only model I have ever found in 1:200 was a F-III (silver finished and to be rebuilt, so on my "to do" list). Most Fokkers are available in other scales I noticed, but I stay true to my collecting criteria. Sometimes It is worth checking Shapeways. They have some pre-made 1:200 Fokkers, like the recently added Fokker F-IX. All the best, Marc |
Re: KLM 100 years
Thank you Marc! Very nice info!

Re: KLM 100 years
You can really appreciate the intricate details, fit and finish on these tiny models. It takes a skill level which far, far beyond which I could even hope to have.
Stunning collections Marc and Jean Pierre. |
Re: KLM 100 years
Beautiful models Marc and Jean Pierre! It is great to se these pre-WO2-planes in 1/200.
They are rare appearances, but do justice to the beautiful history of both airlines (who are one now). cheers, VJ |

As a KLM collector I also collect the fleet of KLM Cityhopper.
In previous years they have operated the brands KLM UK, KLM Exel and KLM Alps as well. Received my KLM Alps Dornier 328 yesterday in 1:200. Although nice looking it needs a nose modification, because the grey cheatline is not as it should be. Still an unusual aircraft so herewith some pics. |

It appears they're finally ready. Would be a good year's end if I can pick them up before the year is over.
The Boeing 747 ERF in new KLM livery with 100 years sticker would cetainly be one of my highlights this year. |
