Default Rethinking my collection

Hello all, just putting some thoughts out there on our great hobby.

I got into collecting about a year ago and really jumped in. Collected a lot of cool stuff and for a while all was good......until I ran out of space.

Now I have decided that you really can't collect everything you like so you have to be a bit more selective, space wise and funds wise. So I have gone to a 1 in, 1 out rule. It keeps my space constant and also allows me to rotate some of the models to display them without being overwhelmed.

It does however, involve some tough choices on what to focus on, what to keep, etc. I have a special place for wide bodies, and house colors growing up in California and then in Hawaii, seeing them all the time in the late 70's and 80's. That being said, there are some that simply will never be sold by me. They are too unique or special.

My wife also commented about what she would do with all this stuff should something happen to me, she would have no idea how to dispose of it. She actually made a comment last night when we were talking about it to the effect of "you can't collect them ALL". Stupid I know, but I guess sometimes you think you can.

Thanks for listening all, and I hope you all have a great week!

Happy collecting!

I have also had to really cut down on my criteria. I'm not a person who collects models to have them sit in a box somewhere so space is the biggest issue for me. At this point I'm limited to 2 airlines and planes I have flown on (exact reg) with a few exceptions.

I've also thought about what my wife would do with all of these models if something were to happen to me. I at least keep a spreadsheet with all the details listed for what I have, so she would at have that to start with if she needed to sell them off.

Me too. My bigger issue is storage space, as I ran out of places to put these boxes long ago. I have really cut back on what I buy, and have to offer a few for sale to make room. I also really need to have a plan for the future as I am single, and would like to see these maybe donated to a museum or something rather than just end up in a dumpster or estate auction.

I bought some Detolfs to house some more models, but I'm at the limit, even with those.

Don't like to keep any stored, so getting ready for a Fleabay sale soon.

I understand where you're coming from, but "1 in 1 out" is not collecting, it's replacing...

I consider myself a "hunter and gatherer" and am however hopeful that I'll have my own playroom one day at which point I would regret having sold some stuff I liked...

I think we have all been there as collectors. We start out quickly and then space becomes a concern. My collection is based on Aircraft that I have flow on in the correct livery (not necessarily the same reg number). Although I have been on all of Gemini's Hawaiian which put me in an interesting spot, if I don't particularly care about reg number should I get the different ones released? I ultimately decided to because it is a great livery and holds sentimental value with such great family memories. My other two criteria may be a stretch. If I have touched or been on board the plane. This allows for museum planes like the City of Everett and Concorde. Lastly, and this is a stretch, but I count the UPS fleet that my Surf Boards fly on to and from the Islands. Hello UPS MD-11...

Like all collectors, space will be at the end a problem. And I'm lucky: at this moment I have almost 1.000 models in my cabinets.

But what will happen when I'm gone ? I'm single and I put everything in Excel but there will be nobody to read it. I have already contacted a museum but there is no interest.

Maybe, when I have time and I'm feeling that the end is almost there, I will give my models for free on this forum ? I prefer that my models will end in good hands than being destroyed. But meanwhile, I enjoy collecting (it is my life) and after me, who knows, that's not my problem.

What a sad thoughts on this threat... Dear Leonardo, your legacy will be assigned to somebody in the end. Maybe it is wise to share your excel sheet, including estimated value of your models and the login of this forum with that particular person? Than it is up to the next of kin to inform us about your decease and to sell your models here on the forum.

Dear Habu968, for you and your wive as well: it might help her now to make a plan together. So she know, when the time is there, that she carries out your last wish. That will give you the assurance that someone with dedication will take care of your beloved models.

But most importantly to all: please stay with us for a long time!

cheers VJ

This is why I collect a bit of everything that being Airliners jetfighters, Star Wars Starfighters (Vintage & Current), Dino-Riders, Stegosaurid models, Orchids Minerals (Crystals & Fossils) Shells, Cars, 2CPU Workstations, Servers, Graphics Cards & Sound cards.

Okay Collecting everything is impossible but a little bit from that everything is doable if taking it on in a creative way

Making choices can often be the hardest thing since you can for example only afford one item or two items over 2 or 3 others even you want them all the addiction grows in to like an obsession and that can be the danger of collecting, I have gone in the minus a few times I have to admit lmao
***** happens I guess.

But I too had to cut own my boxes, just don't have space for such things, I keep them for a while then I get rid of them the items is all what matters to me, since I display them anyways.
I never saw the point of keeping the boxes and keeping the models in there.
They are to me an awesome yet cool way of decorating my apartment, just try to keep them out of direct sunlight and you're all set good to go.

Just as long you are enjoying what you are doing go for it ya know
Being alone I can hide myself within my collections and it helps me to drift away within the worlds they are from or in, hard to explain sorry.

They help me mentally so collecting can have good healing for one's mind as well.
But in the end space will always be an issue for us all even that IKEA has some very ideal solutions, they too can run out hah xD

Welcome to my world. I live in a 1741 sq foot town house, and literally ran out of room, and that is one of the reasons I sold off a majority of my collection.

I do regret selling some of the planes but still have many nice ones to love and some will be coming soon, so it is not a total loss

Sure... Well, I have the Hawaiian Fleet. (Looking forward to adding the A321 in July with OAK TO LIH) We usually take our boards over but it was getting expensive to ship on the airline. Then it finally dawned on me... why not just ship them over? Fortunately we have a UPS account at the office so the cost is way better than "baggage". The last couple of trips, I just matched my package with flight-tracker. Usually it is an MD-11 form HNL to ONT and then a 757 up to Sacramento. So now my criteria is planes that I have flown on, touched or had any of my possessions on!

As some collectors have said. I also follow the 1 in 1 out or replacement rule as others call it. It is the only way to prevent clutter in a small apartment. Certain unique models will stay until there is a financial crisis or just something that forces me to sell. I have also regretted selling certain large models but oh well at that time it had to be done. I dont keep an exel sheet but i do print out all my ebay invoices or other online invoices of models and collectables i purchase and keep them in a file, so that prices can be tracked and its easier for those who are not computer savy.
