It's the choice you made for wanting to have all these models!
This hobby is indeed very pricey, that's why personally, I chose to bring it to a hobby level and not to an out of control expense, creating a burden.

I love all planes, all (accurate) models but I spend much less, I am very selective, I make a few custom models and I am very happy.

So your average cost per model, most of which are widebody, is only $35.71? Sounds pretty damned cheap to me.

There is also a cost to house and display models. I hope you aren't investing so much of everything just for plastic models.

I had a few diecast cars for years and always liked the detail. I have always loved planes. I bought my first diecast plane May 2015. I now have 477 1/200 diecast planes. Almost all of them are widebodies. I currently have 14 747s on pre order. Luckily I have the space for them. I also have them all itemized on a spreadsheet with the cost. Something I hope my wife never sees! Congrats on your collection, lets see some photos

My bill for models this year was around $2,100.

That is why I'm complaining about space now.

I hear that. I might have to sell some of the lessor enjoyable ones to make room.

My son’s diecast cars have much more details than my planes and are much cheaper! Our planes are definitely overpriced.

Just tallied mine up for the year to find that I only spent $1755.00 NZ incl P&H over 8 models. A lot less than the previous year when I only just started collecting and now have 63 .

Hi
Have you not made a mistake?
After conversion, the average price of the model is about 127 USD.

You guys that collect 1/200 models, then complain about the cost and the space?? Ask yourself why you need to collect 1/200 scale, when the quality of 1/400 scale models is so good, the price is generally half that of 1/200 scale models and they take up half as much space! For me, the object of collecting is to have a scale model of my favourite aircraft regardless of scale, so 1/400 is ideal as everything available in 1/200 has been made in 1/400.

Hello Adrian …

True if you are limiting yourself to modern aircraft but if you are interested in older airliners or pre-war aircraft, custom made models and 1/200 scale are the only solution.

The Farman 2234 was a bit tricky to make, I don't imagine this in the 1/400 scale.

At the same scale, I have in my cabinet aircraft ranging from the Piper Cub to the A 380.

I thought you had done the conversion already for 3 currencies, so I only used the US amount. Your post was ambiguous. You should have converted to one currency instead of posting the total cost as three, which can't be easily grasped by anyone without a calculator and research. @$127 you spent just under $7000 total... now we're talking expensive hobbies.

Well, if you're really concerned with space, then why not go 1:500? The deal to myself is no more models, unless they can be displayed.

If I had the space, I'd do all 1:100s. Only have 3 of those, KLM B744, KLM B734, and Lufthansa A388. But all on display

Would never buy 1:400, for me they are just too small. A380 or 747 are ok but smaller aircraft are too small for me. But that's just my opinion..

Adrian, for me it is age and eye acuity or lack thereof! I had over 4K 1:400 models with a quarter of those on display on a rotating basis. I enjoyed them for years, but dwindled it down to about 1,300 1:400 models that I sold as a lot to Waffle after years of aggravation on Ebay. After awhile too many 1:400 displayed just looks too busy! It was becoming a chore and a hoard. I have narrowed down my criteria for 1:200 and am enjoying the hobby much more. Your point of space is also a big determining factor for many I would think. The foundation of my collection are still my Aero Mini's, it's what got me in the hobby in the late 60's early 70's (not age).

Wow, Aero Minis. I'm pissed I sold all mine off in the 90s.

Not bad at all, this is what some times I paid for just one order, having 5-6 orders atleast every year, just reaching 935 diecast airliners now in 1:200 scale.....
