Will Herpa make an Irkut MC-21?
Happy Wright Flyer Day: 114 years ago today was the first documented, manned, powered, controlled, heavier-than-air flight by 32-year-old Wilbur Wright at Kitty Hawk, North Carolina. Meanwhile this morning was the first flight of Comac’s second C919 prototype; I bought this C919 model from Wamami1 on Ebay, but it’s completely unbranded. It’s a heavy, completely die-cast metal model, but the box says nothing except ‘Change For The Better’ on it. I know that SkyWings make the 1/400th model, but I’m guessing that this is just some unnamed Chinese toy manufacturer.
The C919 is very similar to the A320 (my very random Bingo Airways plastic snap-fit model is by MegaModels), but I prefer the Sukhoi Superjet 100. It’s a beautiful Herpa resin model (554862), as is the other narrowbody, the Embraer E190 (557276). The rather small-looking 737-300, a plastic snap-fit model made by Long Prosper is in the livery of AB Airlines, also known as Air Bristol (my home city), one of the first budget airlines, pre-dating Easyjet and Ryanair.
I should’ve waited for my Bombardier Q400 to arrive in the post to complete my roll-call of Airbus & Boeing competitors, but now I’m looking forward to someone – hopefully Herpa – making an Irkut MS/MC-21, currently in flight tests.
— Does anyone know how to find out when the first MC-21 model will be available?
— Do you think that any of these narrowbodies will ever knock Airbus or Boeing off the number 2 spot in the narrowbody market?
I think the Sukhoi (apparently pronounced Sue Hoy?) is the most handsome. Already in operation in Mexico and Russia, they’ve already had one fatal crash and one gear-up landing. Very interesting times as this market is becoming even more crowded.
