Default 1978-2008 USA models needed

I would think most of us, as collectors, have a list, a shortlist or even a couple airliners they're always hoping will be made into a model. For most, it's probably a mental list. Looking at my collection I thought it would be fun to make a list of what's left to make in the era's I collect and what's at the top of that list. In my opinion there are several categories of eras. I separate eras like this - Propliners (pre -1958), jet age (1958-1978), deregulation 1978-2008) and then current. My thinking is that 1958 with the dawn of the jet age changed everything from types of planes to new and revolutionary logos and marketing. I think 1958-1978 was quite a bit different time period for American aviation than post deregulation, when costs were cut, and airlines consolidated so much. In addition to the mergers and bankruptcies, a lot of airlines refreshed their images. This would be my favorite time period to collect models from. In my opinion, this era ended in 2008 with several major events- Northwest merging into delta, and disappearing; Continental merging into United and disappearing, along with simultaneously killing of the United tulip; America West into USAirways, USAirways into American and American ending one of the most long running and iconic airline images of all time. So the current time period starts for me at about 2008.

This particular thread's purpose is to throw out there what's left from the deregulation era of 1978-2008 to make in models. I'm obviously hoping to influence the model makers choice a bit, give them something to choose from, but also point out that there may be some pretty obviously overlooked airlines. As one gets made, like the Ozark DC-9-10 from Gemini this month, I'll dig up the thread and refresh what's still out there. I'm also curious to keep track of what's the hottest item still left on the list? Like until last October it would've been the twin stripe TWA MD-80. I made this list, but what am I missing? Also, if you had to pick one, what's the "hot-want"?

I never knew Valujet had MD-80 aircraft but you missed the TWA twin stripe 727-200 (remember the IF 200 TWA 727-200 was crappy) & Delta Widget MD-80...

I think ValuJet only had a couple MD-80s right near the end. Added a re-do section at the bottom of the list, I would say the TWA twin stripe solid title 727 tops that.

Out of your list, I'd definitely like to see polished AA non-wingleted 757/767s. Add a 727-200 to the list as well while you are at it.

Also like to see Northwest Orient 747-200 and Northwest Cargo 747-200F with ultra chrome finish as well as a later NW 'Worldplane' 744 and the last NW colours 744 too. Tower Air 747 would also be nice.

Lastly I'd like to see some cargo metal from Evergreen, Polar Air and Kalitta.

YES! Yes to all these! I would argue lots to do from just 1978-1988! More deregulation carriers, Saul Bass liveries, widgets, PSA's, and please some US DHC-7's! Herpa's mould is awesome.

I like the orange the best myself; but would the diehard PSA collector be wanting the pink ones too?

Triple Crown One, Silver One, Lone Star One, California One, Arizona One, and the Shamu planes. I personally would love to see any of these done by JC/GJ. I would like to see the special liveries on the -700s done too but their -700 mold sucks.

Maybe add a Delta Widget 757-200 to the redo list, I believe there is demand for it.

Definitely in for that one. Did take a look at the IF version and didn't go for it.

Agree. We also need a Western 737-300 (Bud Lite) and a 737-200 Bud Lite do-over with the correct white trim along the cheat lines. (IF200 blew it.)

I would take the Air Florida 727-200 as well...

http://www.diecastaircraftforum.com/...1&d=1485880821

and both the ATA 757-200 gold & holiday liveries was also an excellent choice by the OP...

There was one produced back in 2011 by Sovereign, limited to only 5 models. They were hand painted and not very good. I had one of the orange/navy livery B721s and one of the blue/green livery DC-9s.

Shamu was on BOTH a -300 and a -500 right?

Any Republic MTM Gray scheme would be great. As a Southwest fan all of the previous unreleased schemes would be welcome, as would a Morris Air, Muse Air, and TranStar

I forgot about Muse Air! I had a friend that worked for them in Dallas, it would be nice to see their MD-80s again.

Just a small note: Continental 737-500s never wore the meatball livery. CO first got -500s around 1994 or '95, while the meatball livery was ditched in '91.

There's always the Herpa Premium -300 in the globe livery, but I absolutely would love to see a good diecast example as well. GeminiJets did a decent -500, though it has winglets (which I like, some won't).

DC-15? I assume you mean DC-9-15? I will second this request. Also, Gemini did a pretty good red meatball MD-80.

I was out of collecting for a couple of years. I missed this one. But it is now on it's way to join my CO fleet. I had to change my user name on here but I bought the Brad Shinn -500 of of you. Now if we could get GJ to do a 757-300 and 767-200 in CO colors.

I'll second the motion for Frontier 732 or MD-80 Saul Bass Livery! What doesn't get any more 80's than a smiling PSA MD-80 or 721/722? Pass me the SWA 'Mustard Rockets' on any airframe please? A Black Meatball MD-80 would be really rare since there were only four (4) that left the factory. Any body need a Red MB MD-80, I have spares?

Absolutely on the Frontier Saul Bass. I would love to see a small run with the CO titles or the very short lived "Proud Bird to Be" titles. Also a black meatball small titled MD-80.

Good call on the Reno MD-90. Was the Gemini MD-87 the only Reno release or do we still need an MD-80 too?

I almost forgot about all of the America West themed 757s- Phoenix Suns, Arizona Cardinals, Arizona Diamondbacks, Arizona, Nevada, Ohio, coast to coast, and teamwork. That's 8 more 757s!

I just realized that the American Trans Air 707 would fit this list since ATA did not retire the type till 1984. It would fit very nicely into my collection.

Ok, add one more. The Northwest Airlink CRJ 900 last colors. We had 36 planes painted that way.

Updated the list above ^, found a couple other good ones....Ozark MD-82?! Heck yeah! New York Air MD-80, 737-300. ALso, HP operated the neat little 737-100 in that 80s/90s white with blue stripes motif. And I thought I had the Continental A300's on there, but they are now. Also, Western Pacific's 737-300s in special livery were pretty popular back in the day...have they been made?

I almost forgot about all of the America West themed 757s- Phoenix Suns, Arizona Cardinals, Arizona Diamondbacks, Arizona, Nevada, Ohio, coast to coast, and teamwork. That's 8 more 757s!
3rdwatch mentioned PeoplExpress which reminds me that the PeoplExpress 747 is not on the list or is that one from before 1978?

The America West 747 ex KLM will be a nice one too.
