Default 747 Collection

Hi, here are several of the latest pictures of my 747 collection, which now numbers 41 (not including the Pan Am models, which are in separate cabinets). I also have two more coming (KLM Cargo and United Saul Bass). Sorry for the reflection from the glass doors, try as I might, I couldn't get around that. Its great to finally have the collection all together.

The "Battleship" UA is the real thing.

I love this collection! Your original 747 collection posts inspired me to start up my own mate, though my collection is a lot smaller than yours! I love your TWA twin globe, such a beautiful bird.

The only ones I have pre-ordered are the KLM Cargo and the UA Saul Bass. I'm having to be more particular, as the collection is taking up so much space, I don't have room to display many more. If they ever release a 1:200 Flying Tigers, that will be another immediate buy.

The only plastic model is the one at top right, which is a Hogan. The larger Pan Am Billboard at extreme left is a wood model, purchased off eBay years ago.

Thank you for the kind words. You probably found that collecting 747 die cast models can get very expensive, and also takes up a lot of room if you want to display them in an uncluttered fashion. I agree with you about the TWA twin globe, it is one of my favourites, and came to me courtesy of a fellow DAC member.

I see we have similar taste in models wu6fiend. Nice collection, mine is close in numbers but it is not great as yours plus you have them all displayed inside a cabinet.

Thanks for sharing!!!

The UA "Battleship" (or "Business Suit" the livery was also nicknamed that) can be seen in the fourth cabinet from the left, on the top shelf. It is a 747-400 with a dark grey fuselage, and a blue tail with a small United "Tulip" on it. It is a very sought after model, and I was fortunate to buy it for a fair price.

You are definitely right, 1:200 747s take up a lot of room, though it is the boxes more than the models! A lot of attic space! Do you think you will get another Ikea case in the future, what with some pretty amazing models in the pipeline, like the Varig 744 or the United Saul Bass 741?

I've pretty much maxed out the display space in this room, which is our home office. I only have two new 747s on order, and plan to display them on the top of the cabinets when they arrive. The miscellaneous models (the tri-jets etc.) will have to retire to their boxes to make room. I do have another Detolf unused at present, but there really isn't room for it. For those DAC members thinking about Detolfs, I note that Ikea (at least in Canada) has slashed the price of the new ones by $20.

These cabinets make a very beautiful display, but take a lot of space. If you would install a single display cabinet of the same width, you can double your collection without running out of space. But such cabinet costs a bit more than the Detolfs though

All in, I think I have spent less than $250 for my nine Detolf cabinets, plus about $150 for extra shelves and the brackets to hold them. I agree with you 100% that I could display a much larger number of models if I had one large cabinet, but the price of a custom (I've seen prices in the thousands) is very hard to justify. The last Detolf cabinet, purchased used, cost $20!

I am getting some Detolfs for my collection and noticed yesterday that Ikea [Canada] has a new flavour Detolf- same price, different p/n - looks to be the same size but make sure before you run off and order the extra shelves if you get the 'new' ones.

The only significant change I noticed was the Detolf now comes in two separate boxes (instead of one, hugely heavy one). The IKEA employee told me they were responding to customer comments that the one box Detolf was too heavy.

Three new 747s have joined the lineup: Delta, British Airways, and rarest of all Swissair.

The latter is a pre-production model, with several tiny (barely visible) flaws in the printing. I am very pleased to obtain all three.

I have had to do some reorganizing, to make room for the additional 3 747s (Malaysia Hybiscus, UA Saul Bass, and KLM latest livery) that are pre-ordered.

Here are a shot of each model, and the overall 747 collection. Enjoy!

Hope one day, very soon, I could share my entire 747-400 fleet. There is no other airframe such as sexy and unique as the Jumbojet.

Greetings!

PS: @MISCUZI: that BA was made by Inflight200 some years ago, very sought after collectible. There even some rarest BA like One World golden nose or One World with the red nose.

The Swissair certainly has a very unusual cockpit area paint scheme, it almost makes it look like the plane is wearing a bandit mask. Its similar to the SAA Springbok.

I haven't purchased an SQ Tropical, although I am still mulling over it. I also have the KLM intro livery 747-200 on order, I forgot about that one.

I really like the BA current livery 747-400, and prefer it to the even rarer gold or red nose versions. Looking forward to seeing your collection of Jumbos one day.

The Air India certainly took a lot of time to find. However, in terms of sheer rarity (as demonstrated by how infrequently it comes up for sale) the Swissair is arguably the winner. I've seen at least three Air Indias on eBay in the last year or so.

Nice one mate, glad you got her...are the intake rings on the engines a dark metal, or is it just the contrast of the photos, seems every pic I see of this bird, the intake rings look darker.

I just checked, the photo is a quite accurate representation of the colour of the intake rings. If I had to choose a description, "dark gun metal" springs to mind. The exhaust is the same colour. Its really a terrific model, I'm really delighted to get it. Its been given pride of place, right above the United "Blue Tulip" in the centre cabinet.

Here's a couple up to date shots of my 747 collection, taken this afternoon.

Recent additions include the lovely (and rare) IF200 Iraqi, the Socatec Air France delivery scheme, Swissair pre-production, KLM delivery scheme, and Air New Zealand classic.

I have 10 new releases on pre-order, so I will have to do something to add more display space! Anyway, enjoy.

Agreed.

Don't know why IF ditched this feature on their latest models.

Even those wing lights done by JC is not as nice as IF.
JC version looks like jewelry nicked from mommy's bracelet.

Glad I'm not the only collector who feels this way. I much prefer clear landing lights to the "jewels." They don't look realistic at all.

Very nice (and sometime is less more )

And looking at your display place, your next step seems to be to put all those planes inside the glass cabinet which came with a stand
