Default Question about Aiken's Airplanes

Hi guys,

I found a model I've been looking for on the Aiken's Airplanes site. I've never done business with them before so I'd just like to get some feedback with regards to their service before I take the plunge?

Thanks!

They aren't my primary vendor but the couple purchases have gone and shipped flawlessly.

Same for me. I usually buy elsewhere, but the few purchases have gone flawlessly for me too. I've also called them before and they are courteous and helpful on the phone too.

I wouldn't hesitate to purchase from them again if the had something that I wanted.

I've visited his warehouse in Tn. It's actually only around the corner from my girlfriend's college friends farm. The owner is a retired FedEx pilot and very helpful and nice. Wouldn't hesitate to order from him again.

Same. My experience with Aiken's has been 100% positive. Quality merchandise and fast, reliable delivery.

Easily my favourite online retailer, actually. Fast and well packaged. Sometimes they even send mints too! Great customer service.

I just placed an order 3 days ago and received an email to verify my identity with sending them a "Mug Shot" with my driver license and credit card in my hand and they call it: "for my own protection".
THIS IS RIDICULOUS. This does NOT improve my safety in any way. To the contrary, I don't even know how they can secure my picture with my driver license on their servers...
I am now in my mid forties, a physician and have been calling them with questions in the past.
I have never ever encountered such a ridiculous request before and to me that is racial profiling since my name sounds foreign.
I called them next day but they didn't respond!!!!

To me this is very very poor customer service at best and likely malicious. They ruined my purchase experience and the fun of ordering and waiting for the merchandise to arrive.
I DO NOT RECOMMEND THEM TO ANYONE.

My very 1st online retailer along with 3000toys, absolutely reliable and fine couple.
Bought at Aiken's most of my 1/48 F/Mint models, still remember when I gave them a phone call from Rome, IT, 'cause my bank was "investigating" about a transaction blocking temporarely my c. card.
She replied: "No problem Giacomo, we trust you, we'll send you the model, but now let me go, I'm takin' my kids to the school-bus..."
The same about the way they arrange the packages: also the mighty JSI F14 arrived in mint conditions, the reason I stopped to buy at Aiken's is due to the TRUELY & VERY expensive costs of the VAT once the parcels arrive at the custom of the MXP intl apt, currently I'm buying and shopping at aviationmegastore located in Holland.
They're simply the best, imho...

As I have said, I have bought models from Aikens many times, always with great results. They are friendly when I have called and always ship quickly. I've never had a problem in the many years that I have bought from them.

My experience with them has me wondering about the accuracy of the negative experience recounted above. It is just so far outside any of my experiences with Aikens that it makes me wonder if the problem may rest with the credit card approval process of the credit card company and not with Aikens. If there is a problem with getting the purchase 'approved' by the credit card company, most retailers will not complete the purchase. That sounds like a more reasonable explanation to me.

My experience with Aikens has me believing that there is more to the story above than is being stated.

To be honest, the story is far outside of my experience with any retailer not just diecast model sellers. I agree that any problem with payment, retailers will usually stop the purchase and inform the customer accordingly.

Love them, my only beef is the standard shipping speed from them to the west coast feels glacial...

I wish that was true, but it's not! It's the same credit card I use to buy from Amazon or Historic Aviation as examples.
And after your postings I ended up calling my credit card company and they did not have any red flags...
Besides, asking for a picture as identification is not a credit card company request, it's the retailer....

I am happy you guys are happy, my experience was a disaster. I personally feel insulted instead of feeling happy and joyful about a purchase.

So, I finally was able to talk to Dave Aiken directly and he agreed to overthink their policy on asking for pictures and etc.
It was a really good talk and I am glad. I think in this particular case the first time order triggered a flag.
I hope that other people in future are not dealt with this way and also that retailers won't have any fraudulent orders either, but that's a little bit of wishful thinking.

I ditched them years back when they had a/ inaccurate listings on their website & b/ tried charging me $10 extra for 'handling' as I lived outside of the US.

Things may well have improved since them but these days I have better & less expensive options out of Hong Kong or Europe.
