Default Review: InFlight200 Braniff 747 N601BN

Just some of my observations on my new arrival : InFlight200 Braniff 747 N601BN

In a word, disappointed.

Here is the list:
1- Color is off. She was called " The great pumpkin" . Too much red. Looks like the not so great apple.
2- On the box is says "polished" . The only place this bird can have any unpainted surface is on the bottom. But on the model they just used silver paint. Whatever.
3- Now for the printing. Someone at the plant must be at the rum cake again. The windows are OK looking from the sides but if you look at her from the nose you can see one side to the other is way crooked. Big time.
4- Speaking of nose... why did they suddenly emphasize on the nose/ radome seam? Its done in a heavy line - way too thick. And its unrealistic. It can be seen 3 feet away. Not to scale. And - its very crooked too! Off centered - looks awful.
5- Looks like InFlight200 went with a " after deregulation " motif for this Braniff. I would have loved to see one of the most significant and distinctive 747s of all time done in true delivery colors. Missing: White engine cowlings and the black Boeing 747 title by door # 5.
6- The "Limited Edition" card that comes with the modes is just the opposite- unlimited. No numbers printed or written in.

I'm on the fence to return this one and try for another example in hopes the printing is better. However, in the past I have done so and usually a crooked print runs the entire batch.

If your a hard core Braniff and or early delivery Boeing 747 affectionado then you know we are on the same page.
All I can do is hope Gemini Jets 200 will do one but that probably will only happen when Hades freezes over. The best current die cast example is from Gemini Jets with the Club Model #1 in 1/400 scale.
Collect what you want and enjoy.

Would love to see some pics showing the defects so we can make up our own minds about how bad they are. Crooked cabin window printing would be a 'no go' for me though.

Just took some quick phone pics.
The windows and color on the GJ 1/400 are sweet!
What was IF thinking about with that silly radome?

I built a model of this plane when I was a teen. I think I'll hold onto my GJ a little longer.

Like Kelso49 above, I too was on the fence about ordering this model. Thank you for posting this review and the photos. What a shame this release contains so many flaws.

I don't quite understand your disappointment concerning the colour. A quick comparison with the original lets the 1/400 model look bad somehow...

Color can be a real tricky thing to reproduce correctly. Different films, development, scanning and monitors all add up in inconsistencies.
Much more pumpkin. Yes its true their are plenty of pics that show her more red.
Wish IF did a little better. I'm not bucking to join the micrometer club!
The above pic of the 747 flying and banking to the right at the top of this thread is really what the color looked like. ( for some reason I'm not allowed to reload that photo again )

Glad I didn't order this one. I already have N602BN and as much as I would like to own a model of N601BN, I want it on the JCW mould.

My retailer was kind enough to show me some pics of another one he has in stock.
Looks like the print fault affects the whole run of them.

I'm keeping it. It's the kind of model I'll hold on to until something better comes along to replace it. If ever.

Mine arrives tomorrow, possibly today. If it looks like that with the poor pax window alignment it may go back. We'll see soon enough.

I wonder why IF200 decided to print silver frames on the cockpit windows? Photos of the actual aircraft clearly show the frames are painted orange.

That may have only lasted a short time. I can only speculate because it became a maintenance issue. Needing frequent respray from wear and tear.
The photo of her rotating you can see its painted.
Then the pic of her at the gate in HNL its not. Keep in mind at this point she is still in her full glory. Flying between DFW and HNL and nothing else.
Last pic is an inaugural ceremony at London in 1978 for the then new deregulated expanded service. This is the time frame I believe what IF is depicting with this model. Again personally I would have like it much better in full delivery colors. The white engine cowling has great continuity with the white tail.

Thank you for the photos and information! I can only imagine what it must have been like back in those days as a passenger. I can only relate to flying on 727s back then.

Mine is a disappointment too. I don't know what all goes into production of these models, but that an entire production run could happen without quality checks is amazing. I think all collectors should return this to let Inflight know we expect more. Very sad they messed up such anticipated model, but lesson learned too: Very rarely is it a good idea to pre-order without pictures of a final production for security.

I'll stick with my original IF release. I'm very happy with it, although I confess I do like the white tail and Braniff insignia on the tail on the new release.

For those who know the history of the Braniff 747s, when did they adopt the white tail, versus the completely orange tail? Were the aircraft delivered in one colour, and then got white tails later? Having a look at images on the net, there are photos of Braniff 747s in both monotone and orange/white liveries. Maybe the first 747 remained all orange, and subsequent ones were orange with white tails.

Just curious...

The Braniff 747 with the white tail and orange "BI" logo came first. It joined the airline in 1970 and wore an adapted version of Braniff's famous livery designed by Girard. The 747 model with the orange tail wears Braniff's "Ultra" scheme designed in 1977.

Considering its flaws and incorrect color, I truly hope InFlight will run a new production of the botched release. The aircraft was likely the most famous of all Braniff planes and certainly a popular subject among collectors.

same issue with my example. also botched window line and this stupid looking white lines on the radome which were never applied to the real aircraft AFAIK.
quite a dissapointment to see IF's QC to fail big time (again).

I have the first one and love it! I have it displayed on the top shelf in the corner of my cabinet (glass on three sides and mirror back) so it is one of the first models seen when a person walks into the room. I also like the fact IF200 didn't put silver cockpit frames on it.
