Default Review: Gemini200 Air North Hawker Siddeley 748 C-FYDU

Gemini200 Limited Edition Collector's Model
Air North, Yukon's Airline
Hawker Siddeley 748
1:200 Scale Die Cast Model
C-FYDU

C-FYDU was one of two HS 748 airliners purchased by Air North from New Zealand's Mount Cook Airlines in 1996 to replace their aging fleet of DC-3s. For twenty years, the Hawker Siddeley 748 has serviced the northern communities of the Yukon and Alaska as well as providing charter services throughout western Canada. As part of a fleet of five HS 748s, C-FYDU remains in Air North's fleet and continues to be a workhorse of the north. As the newer ATR 42 begins to replace the HS 748 on Air North's daily scheduled passenger service towards the end of this year, the Hawker will remain on strength as a cargo, fuel haul and charter aircraft.

After hours of taking detailed photographs, matching pantones and sending countless emails, this well-loved aircraft has been extremely well replicated by GeminiJets exclusively for Air North with this 1/200 collectible. I worked with these aircraft for years and I can honestly say they couldn't possibly have made this one more accurate. This is a very, highly recommended model if you can get one.

Hi Zendocon
Thanks for posting the pictures of the finished model.
It looks really nice and accurate, the printing is excellent.
Just had a look on the Aviationworld.Canada website but it is not yet available.
Will order it as soon as it is available there.
Many thanks for the excellent work you did on this model and the ATR42.

Nice work Patrick.

Looks like a real gem of a model.

I'll have to add one to the collection.

I was looking at the wing span as well, almost as if it's meant to have four engines

Very smart looking model, quite impressed with the detailing at this scale

I am a big fan of the HS-748, but I'm afraid an obscure airline like Air North never seen outside Canada is not a classic scheme for me. I prefer delivery schemes mainly of national flag carriers. Looks great though.

Actually, it's quite frequently seen in the US as well. However, your point is taken. That said, this is only the third HS 748 GeminiJets has released and the first was over six years ago. I wouldn't hold your breath for too many classic Hawker releases. The only reason this one was done is because it was commissioned by the airline itself. But then again, for true Hawker enthusiasts, this really is the one to have. 20 years of service with Air North and the only remaining Hawker passenger service in the world. That makes this release very significant.

I fought for a lot of extra detail on this one - more than we usually see on a commuter airliner at this scale.

The photos are very nice indeed. Hopefully I'll hear from Air North soon, I sent them an email on Sept 14 expressing my interest in purchasing one and was emailed back saying they would contact me as soon as they had them. Same with AviationWorld.

Fingers crossed, as I would hate to miss out on this, especially now that I know this particular aircraft was an ex Mount Cook aircraft.

Yeah, The bottom of the box has a little story about the Hawker in Air North service too. It's a very nicely packaged unit. I can't take credit for the box though. That was commissioned.

I hope to catch one more ride on one of these before the ATRs take over their passenger sched service. It's easily one of my favourite airliners still in service.

Gemini really seems to be able to step up when they want to. And the results that I've seen, like your example here, are really inspiring. Great job and you must be bustin', as this really is a delightful achievement!!

Yes, kudos to GeminiJets for pulling their socks up and really nailing this one! It's my favourite 1/200 model in my collection, and not just because I used to work for Air North. It really is the most accurate 1/200 commuter aircraft in a consumer-grade model that I have seen.

I would have thought it should be available by now.

Thanks Ajay1
I just sent them an email.I had a look at the Flight City webpage but it's still under construction.
I ordered (the Air North ATR42) from AviationWorld before and was very pleased with their service so I prefer to order from them.Since release of the Air North HS-748 I looked daily on their website but it never showed up so I think they did not yet receive their models.Fingers crossed!

I know Air North has plenty more at this point so they'll have no trouble restocking at this stage. Good to hear they've been selling well for Flight City!

I never did get my email from Air North or Aviation World after both of them said they would as soon as their initial stocks arrived. Also very pleased to hear that Don and his team at Flight City have had them "flying out the door" I had excellent service from them, with my model arriving to me in just over a week from it's dispatch.

I'm not too surprised about Air North. They aren't really set up for retail or online sales. I suspect most (if not all) of what they sell will be to walk-in traffic. I know Don at Flight City takes very good care of his customers. I'm surprised to hear that AvWorld hasn't got back to you though. Perhaps you just caught them at a bad time.

A few days ago I received an email from Mark that these models are in.
At last these arrived at Aviationworld and are listed in their webshop.
Ordered 2 of them straight away.
Looking forward to see them "in the flesh"!
