I made a Herpa Lufthansa Model Edition with Interior Lights. I bought myself two broken models on ebay and interchanged the parts to get an intact model.
Then I installed LEDs inside the fuselage. The model features cabin light, cockpit light and a flashing beacon.
I did this with a rechargeable battery located inside the fuselage, so there are no nasty cables hanging out.
I will post some photos later with the electronics and the interior, if you like.
That's incredible! I've never seen that done before, you must be very pleased with the result. I flew on this actual beauty back in the 90s. I understand that it joined the Mahan Air fleet, after leaving Lufthansa.
Neil.

That is truly wonderful! How would you get the old battery out if it dies?

Incredible! This has been my single most wanted thing on 1/200 models...realistic lighting! I think LED technology has come far enough and small enough to where it's a possibility now. Unfortunetly there would be no way to do it on a diecast without exposed wiring and parts. I like your idea about using a Herpa Premium which can be disassembled. Must find a way to get wingtip lighting! Would also love to get more details on what lighting you used. Thanks
Nice work!!
awesome! yes, i'd pay good money if manus came out with such gems... with internal batteries chargeable by plugging it into its stand that doubles up as a charger. not sure whether we'll ever see manus doing such.
Oh and to any model manufacturers reading this, I would absolutely pay a premium for a model equipped with realistic lighting....a big premium! I doubt it would happen, but I'm just saying
Herpa should strongly consider reviving this range of models.
There is surely enough (or a renewed) demand for these models given the 1/200 market now , compared with 10 years ago.
If technologies like LED lighting .as shown here were incorporated into them , they would definitely warrant a "premium"price for exclusivity in limited numbers.

It sure looks nice, but I wouldn't do it again. The electronics drove me crazy, constantly some element got broke. Here's a picture of the package:
And here inside the fuselage:
As you can see, I had to paint everything black inside, that is not supposed to glow. If you just place some LEDs inside the model, the whole fuselage will glow like a bulb, which is not what you want to have.

That's how you charge it:
I tried to change as little as possible from the outside. On the belly you can see the two holes for recharging, on the left the beacon obvioulsly, and in the middle is the on/off switch.

Oh and here's a gif with the flashing beacons.
I know, technically it should not be a double flash, but I was lucky finding another flashing chip that fits the model after the old one broke 3 times.

Is it possible to show how you took this apart and put it back together again? I don't see any seams or evidence of where the fuselage came apart. No matter what, this is masterful work and very enjoyable to look at.

I posted some photos of the interior in another thread:

Wow, just wow, this is insanely good, just incredible...your attention to detail matches the detailing of the HP line, just awesome.
I dare not disassemble any of the few HP models I have to do this, but I would be happy to send it across for you to do!
Thanks for sharing the pictures of how you did it too, really cool.

Thanks again for all your kind word, really appreciate it!
Guess what, I did some...
Such a masterpiece!
Next step: print out the cargo doors and main deck doors on thick paper and attach it to the stairs to give the impression that the doors are actually open. Technique works very well, and I'm sure you can achieve it even better
