Default I've just scared myself....

So I've been thinking I should work out what I'm spending on this hobby....wow should have thought a bit harder before totalling it up!

Love my models - just hope the other half never works out a running total!

Latest additions of the BA-One World 744 / Singapore Airlines 744 Star Alliance and ANZ 777 Desolation of Smaug felt like essentials though

Just thought I'd share and see if anyone else is crazy / brave enough to keep a track!

I occasionally would think about running up a total, but then I would lay down on the couch and rest until the feeling went away.

I'm also scared for myself because if you can't pay the household bills but yet have the money to spent on Diecast models, then you know there is a problem alright!!

Th other question (not) to ask is what else could I have bought with the money spent on models? If you have other hobbies eg photography, or buy lots of blu Rays etc, it is a constant challenge to keep the spending in check or decide what to buy.

I recently was floored at how much I had spent, so here is my confession.

Because I sell so many models via here on DAC and on eBay. The only reason I sell is to buy new models, I hardly ever spend new earned money from my job, etc to buy models. So it's trading essentially but its the only means I have to do so, sell then buy again. Because of the new IRS rules on reporting internet sales, I had to file a return on my PayPal account, received a 1099. You know how much I sold in models last year?!?! A little over 20k that's how much, and do you know how much I purchased, after ebay fees etc.....nearly 16k.

I almost had a heart attack! And not to mention it cost me more in taxes this year because it was part of my return. I was so mad...not only at our government for trying to take everything they can at every turn by me selling on ebay, but also at myself for selling and spending so much. Geez....I've made a vow this year to not spend as much and to curtail my sales on ebay by half this year. I cannot keep this up...it's just not possible. I do not want to have to file this on my return next year. Its really crazy!!

My first step was to stop pre-ordering. I'll just have to find a model I want after it's released. And if I can't oh well. Second step is I have put a cap on my selling and spending monthly. Hopefully this will help.

I need a therapist!!!!!

I haven't done the actual calculations myself, but just an eyeball estimate and I get the same feeling. Due to my wife and I recently having our first child, I have had to cut back significantly on my plane collecting. It also helps (albeit only slightly) that I've run out of cabinet space... But overall I've had to miss out or wait on some releases I wish I could have sprung for. At this point I think I'm down to prioritizing about 1 plane every 2-3 months : /

HOWEVER - My JC UA777 Battleship is arriving today!!

My issue now is more lack of space than money spent (within reason). I am trying to limit my purchases to 1 a month, but sometimes it's not easy. I've also sold a few models to make some room, but that space was quickly filled up again.
If anything, I think the price increases in the new models will cut my purchases even more.

I keep all my models and detail purchase info on an excel spreadsheet. I put the total spend summary so far down the spreadsheet I can't see it. And that's a good thing. I'll hunt down a few unicorns and am going to be far more picky about what I purchase now.

Talking Re: I've just scared myself....

I thought I'd beat this madness, and make a return to model kit building after some minor success after a near-40 year absence.

The idea was to slow down the 'impulse buy', recognizing that in order to plunk the model on my display shelf, I'd have to spend hours building it first.

Wrong . . .

Instead, I've ended up with a closet full of unbuilt kits with only one or two actually built (successfully).

The good news is, my spending has come down most dramatically, and eventually I WILL build those kits. Meanwhile, I continue to keep my eyes open for those odd diecast that are still missing, and so that is my (lowest) reason for returning here.

Wow - it's reassuring to see that others have the same 'problems'...I think the point about rationalising what else you could have bought is the biggest thing.

I've now found when my other half has bought a new coat or shoes and I try to point out that there's no way they can actually wear another coat....I have it played back to me in the value of how much of a plane it's worth!!

Hey ho - it's all about the rationalising the collections. When I started I bought any 747 I saw and liked...that got silly now I'm sticking to a few airlines as per advice from some wise DAC members!

It's been interesting reading others experience / thoughts.

My wife has a very large collection of shoes and coats - however, she correctly points out that my models are far more expensive than most of her shoes - I have to give her credit where credit is due - she gets her shoes and coats at very low prices.

As for the addiction (compulsion)..well there are so many great models out there. But every time I try to cut back on buying then along comes a great deal, or two or three etc. But I am definitely going to have to cut back as display space is a huge premium. Plus, with how much the Canadian dollar has fallen compared to the US dollar makes it even harder.

My hangar is pretty full, so I've slowed my acquisition rate significantly. (Sorry, retailers.) Will probably pick up a few 747-8's, the Asiana A380, and a Concorde or two, but that may be it for a while. But JCW has been releasing some interesting models lately, like the 747-400 in Boeing house colors, so we'll see. I might have to build a new hangar.

I'm trying to slow down, but then something unexpected will always show up, maybe a new mold, or an old model that I thought I would never find. I've already cut my 1/400 collection by about 40%, but have a lot of 1/72s and now 1/200s that will be very hard to let go of.
And living in a condo really limits my storage space!

I don't know how much I spent, and quite frankly, each time I do a rough calculation in my head it scares me too. If I assume a (rather low) average price of EUR 50 per model, for 200 models that is already 10,000 euros. What the hell? Not to mention that the average is probably a bit higher - especially if factoring in shipping. That said, the main limit now for me is space. And I am trying not to buy new models without selling old ones.

I can honestly say I have my eye on only 2 models right now. Yes, there are some new molds coming and new releases I am looking at, but otherwise I definitely think I have peaked in my 1/200 collection.

You can add a sub category to this thread as well. Models I've purchased because of the photos of others. Yes I'm talking about RobertJohn5, SuperKungFu, Jan Jasinski, UKjohna, arinmuk, vandan and I'm sure I'm missing some other great photo takers and reviewers. If I were a conspiracy theorist I'd almost say these gents were given the models and are plants for the diecast industry to lure the rest of us into spending our cash. How many of us have passed on a model and then see their great photos and then said "yep I'm having one of those now" They've all certainly done me in several times. No complaints though, love the photos and reviews. Carry on! Cheers

G'day,

I've taken a completely different tack with my wife and reminded her that if I didn't spend my money on models, I could just as likely spend it on smoking, or drinking, or going out with my mates, or gambling... so, so many vices. And if I did any of the others, my money would be gone after a very short time. However with my model addiction, the models I buy are an investment. Tho she will NEVER get them... As I've willed them ALL to my younger step Brother who is also a collector...!

I know exactly how much I've spent because my entire collection is insured as an extra under our home contents insurance. I live in a bushfire prone area and considering the many $$$ I've spend, if I do get burnt out, I definitely want the money back!

I know that last year I spend enough on models to put a really good ducted Air Conditioner system into our house... But then who doesn't like 42+ degrees celsius days and toasty 35+ degrees at night..! Thankfully the bedroom has an air-con lol

Cheers Lou

I was out of control in the early days for a while but have over time got a grip on my collecting and now just settle on a few airlines to collect and have downsized my collection lately in order to add new additions... this may be the continued approach similar to travsuz... sell to buy has worked well for me so far...

I do also keep a spreadsheet with my collection on and a value I would consider each model worth for sales purposes in the future... I must say all the resale values I put on most of my models are quite abit less than purchase price, so guess that hits home how this addiction (hobby) can quickly swallow up your money...

The only issue I see myself having in the near future is when I have to look at selling the few fleets I have focused on for newer releases.. Id say certainly my Delta, Virgin and Air Canada fleets are safe but may have to weigh up the others soon...

You all think this hobby is expensive? Try model railroading. I dabble in this hobby some but most of my $$ goes to Model RR.

I was never into model trains, but after seeing some of the displays I have no doubt it can get expensive very quickly!

Indeed this hobby can get expensive. 2014 and 2015 kind of peaked for me. Now Im way more selective and less impulsive.
I went from 10/12 models to a collection now of 40+ 1/200 Diecast models. I do love collecting and my current models, however I don't have enough space to display them, or let me rephrase that, I don't have a man cave to display all of them.

Is for this reason I might start to get rid of them in the next few months and keep the most valuable for me, not necessarily the market.
But yes, has become a bit expensive lately...

Remember, just because you are paranoid does not mean that they are not out to get you!

Not sure about the other guys, but I *do* get all of my BA models for free. The rest I have to pay for. Free models are great benefit, but the all expenses paid, first class round trip to the factory a couple of times a year is even better......
