Default SMA MD-11: Not impressed yet

So I received my SMA Delta N892DL the other day, and due to work schedules and other commitments, I didn't have a chance to take a close look and inspect the model until today. I must say, I am both impressed and disappointed. The packaging is amazing, and I love the style of box SMA uses. The level of detail on the model is superb, and I am impressed there as well!

Now for the bad. The left wing has a extremely loose fit, and there is a fairly large gap where at the root. I tried to gently ease the wing in, but it wont go. It also wiggles easily.

I also noticed two holes, one on the top and one on the bottom of the fuselage. It looks like these are for antenna, but after scouring through the box, I could not find these. The photos on SMA's website even shows antennae in those locations!

So, SMA, I know that you frequent this forum, I think that you might want to check your quality control. Especially if these are extremely limited production runs as has been mentioned in the past. I doubt I will be buying another SMA unless I can see them in person first.

Another manufacturer with quality issues .
How hard is it to inspect a model and put it in a box ?
This manufacturer had all the talk about this mould - but this is an impressive fail for this collector.

A pricey 1:200 'detailed' model aircraft comes with this quality and no antennae is totally unacceptable. I would return it and ask for a refund.

I agree--I'll repeat what I stated recently in another thread:

I too had high hopes for SMA. I was hoping perhaps they would usher in a new era of diecast models, advancing the quality/realism standard significantly forward. But sadly, and perhaps not surprisingly, I can't really tell much difference at all between their product and all the other made-in-China diecast airliners being pumped out en masse these days.

i took my SMA AA md-11 off the shelf the other day to admire and the number 2 engine just fell right out the cowling. pretty weird as i cant recall that happening on any other model i have. not here to pile on, just providing feedback for things that may need to be fixed in the future. (got a delta and the AA, and looking forward to more)

I love the detail that they put into the model, but I am just not impressed by the build quality. Tomorrow Ill do a side by side comparison of the SMA DL next to the JC MD-11

I purchased 2 SMA Delta MD11 N892DL & N802DE.
This model is very heavy, impressive, and beautiful like krislhull said.

I also have a same problem he has on one of them.
There is gap between fuselage and left wing.

There was also a minor crack of paint on fuselage.
Someone might wiggled the left wing to fill the gap and then very inside flap portion might hit fuselage, unfortunately.

I pushed the wing carefully but it won't go in, pulled but won't come out either.
I considered asking replacement but ... too late and I am not afford to pay expensive shipping fee from Japan.

Please advice if someone has good idea to fix this problem.

This is my monologue.
I had flew quite often this plane between NRT and ATL, NGO and PDX when I was a student of Univ. in FL.
MD11 is my good memory when I was young.
I might get GJ200 DL MD11, too.

Please forgive me bad English if don't understand.

First you have to remove the landing gears or the rubber wheels and turn on your kettle and after the water starts evaporate steam, place the fuselage and the wing over steam and then after getting worm from the steam you wil be able to remove the wingf off the fuselage, then you can clean the glue, dry fit the clean parts, put new super glue and try to get everything straight for re fitting the parts

Funny thing is I still have mine on pre-order but maybe after seeing this thread, I'll just cancel it & purchase the Gemini 200 version instead...

Overall I am pretty satisfied with mine (N892DL). As far as a new standard in diecast, probably not, but credit for the great packaging. We do not buy this little gems for the boxes though, right. My one issue is that there is a missing magnet under one of the main gears so it won't stay in. I have a message into SMA so there is an opportunity to see how they handle customer service. Once that issue is dealt with, I will be satisfied.

I think that is the problem with claiming 'a new standard' with a model. You have to actually deliver a model that is a step up from what is available.

The model looks nice, and I understand that errors can happen at the factory, but things like this kind of remove the motivation for buying this model over the Gemini version. But I'm also wondering how big a problem this is. Anyone else have a model with mis-aligned parts of missing pieces?

I think you're wrong and misinterpreted the "new standard" claim. Actually it meant "sub-standard"...

I too had a bad experience with a SMA purchase. I was fortunate enough to find the first release, China Eastern MD-11 passenger version, when first announced. I was so excited because I never thought I would see this livery released. When it arrived, the Friday of Memorial weekend, it had the same damage with the wing separation, it also unfortunately took a big chunk of paint with it.

I contacted the dealer and sent a picture of the damage. I was contacted after a short period of time via the phone and I was told that they were sold out and could not provide an immediate replacement. The good news was that they also contacted SMA and had arranged for SMA to send me a replacement directly. I patiently waited until Labor Day weekend for the replacement to arrive. That's three months with no contact from SMA and obviously no replacement model. I then contacted the dealer to inform them that it was never taken care of and that I wanted a credit. He apologized and issued me an immediate credit. Needless to say I was and still am very disappointed in SMA and their customer service.

There is one other thing that was disappointing with the SMA MD-11 that I had purchased. On my example, it had numerous small nicks and paint chips that had been touched up I presume by hand. For something that is touted as a high end collectable purchase, I wouldn't expect this. I have 150 other models from Gemini, JC, InFlight, AV200, BBox, Western Models, etc... that do not have this type of QC issue. This is the reason why I will no longer support any SMA purchase for my collection.

The picture I've attached is the one sent to the dealer and is the only one I took. It does show some of the mentioned defects and QC issues this specific model had.

I just had a really good talk with Charley Varrick from SMA, and I think I am convinced that they are seriously working on this issue. I don't know about others, but this is actually better customer service than I have gotten from Gemini or JC!

I received the 3 SMA Delta MD-11 models yesterday! All are beautiful, highly detailed and very well done. A suburb diecast airplane, this mould is really really good.

I don't know one manufacturer in this hobby that doesn't have some type of quality issue. This is the trade we get for wanting affordable models, they must be made overseas. Just the way it is...and it's very hard to control quality from that far away. Besides...most of the things mentioned above are very minor.

I think if you reach out to SMA they will respond and will try to help you with any issue you may have.

I'll be posting photos of my 3 models first of the week. Seriously..if you were thinking about getting one I would not hesitate. They are very nice and worth the money paid for the model.

Does this mean you are getting a replacement or replacement parts? If so, I'm very pleased that things worked out different and better for you.

They are not the same..all 3 are different. SMA released 3 variations of the Delta MD-11.

They were a special for the Shanghai show, and the table that we had was mobbed by China Eastern employees. It was a great four days, they were an extremely limited release.

From what I've seen, the JCW stands more resemble GJ. I really wish IF200 would revise their stands to look more like SMA's. IF200's look awful and my models do not sit snugly on them.

One of my Delta MD-11s arrived missing a top antenna. It was nowhere in the box. Upon reaching out here on DAC, SMA immediately emailed me and within a week sent me some replacements in a hand-addressed envelope.
