Default Which Era of Aviation Do You Collect? - Survey

Based on my "classics vs modern" post, I've decided to narrow it down and collect some more defined feedback. Let's hear it from you:

I don't suppose I can really participate as my collection does not span a single era, but I'm still very interesting to see which is most popular.

I collect modern (737-8,-9, 747-4, 777,787), first generation jets, mainly 707s and DC-8s, and some turboprops, plus a few piston engined airliners. Of those I'm anxiously awaiting the next round of 777-300ER molds and I would like to see some more turbo props, mainly Electras, Vanguards, TU-114s and IL-18s and an IL-76 with the turbofan engines.

That being said, I don't see any one category on the poll that adequately describes those preferences. I'm wondering if mixed eras of collection is pretty common with others on this forum too.

Just did this, interested to see the results. Most of the current discussion in this thread seems to be about modern era/rapid expansions (with plenty of mention for the 747), but when members post pictures of their collections, I see a massive representation of older eras.

I have two criteria.

First, I collect aircraft that are (were) used by my airline, unfortunately, there are a few holes, even among "classic" aircraft, A 310 and B 767.
With this criteria, I cover 80 years.
I have a few pre-war aircraft in my collection.

For the second criteria, I just have to look at the rest of my collection, a lot of propellers, not a single B 787, no multicolored aircraft.

I am convinced that the age of the collector may have something to do with the collecting criteria.
Thank you for this survey.

Jean Pierre.

Agreed Jean Pierre. Age/nostalgia vs youth/enthusiasm. I think the kids will have an overwhelming victory.

Luckily, my collection is as complete as I want it to be. Apart from some early DC-8s. The old stuff is definitely falling in demand. Unless HM decide on a REAL or Iberia super connie; pretty sure they would sell well.

Yes, there is no question that the age of the collector could certainly define ones subject interest. We collect what we know or want to know.

I have a modest 1:200 AF collection that spans 60+ years, a 1:144 collection of aircraft that ignited my love of aviation back in the mid-50's, and my 15-20 model 1:72 RAF WWII collection. And then there are the various 1:200 'stragglers'.

Love them all, I was blessed to be part of the last generation (90's) to be able to fly the DC-3 in the lower 48 starting out, then the CV340, catch the 727, and finally earn my tay in the Classic 747 then the 400, it is , they are, all GOOD !!! So a DC-3 is sacred to me, but a 787-9 is wonderful too!!!

not in my case... as i myself am late 70s manufactured i also am facinated by aicraft from the 50s or 60s. but i share you opinion that the age makes you more open minded to new/old influences....

My age doesn't really come into it as I'm collecting aircraft which feature engines that I've been (and currently are) directly involved with during their development and production process, civil and military. My fleet starts with the humble RB.109 Tyne (Vickers Vanguard), and goes through the ages up to the latest and relatively high tech R-R XWB (Airbus A350).

I did the survey,but I would split the Boeing 747 into 1.B741 B742 (1960's & 70's)
2.B743 & B744 (1980's & 90's) 3.B748 2000's.

Similarly the DC-10 (1970's) but the MD11 1990's.

The L-1011 is 1970's

My favourite airliners in order of preference:

1.Boeing 747-100/200
2.Boeing 707 -especially the advanced Boeing 707-320C
3.The VC-10 -especially the Super
4.The Boeing 727 -especially the Boeing 727-100
5.The Vickers Viscount -all later variants -700D -810 series
6.The DC-8 -especially the Super 63
7.The Vickers Vanguard
8.The DC-10-30
9.The Boeing 777-300ER
10.The DC-7C
11.The Lockheed Tristar
12.The Lockheed L188 Electra
13.The DC-3 Dakota

But if you were older perhaps you would also have been involved with the dart ?

I was involved with the Dart. The last time I ran one was in the summer of 1989 and that was on the final development programme that R-R conducted on the type (Mk.552).
Ok, here's the list of engines, in chronological order, that I've been privileged to play with during my time in development testing;
Dart, Conway, Tyne, RB.162 (Trident booster engine), Spey (civil & military), Adour (Hawk, T-45 & Jaguar), RB 211-22b, RB 211-525 (all derivatives), RB 211-535C & E4, Tay, IAE V2500 (A1 & A5), Trent 700, Trent 800, BR710, BR715, Trent 500, Trent 900, Trent 1000, XWB and during a brief session in the eighties the GE CF6-80C2.

Apologies for going off topic.

Bill.

The types were only meant as a guideline. A lot of these aircraft span a lot of decades (DC-3s are still being used today), but the types are still representative of aircraft that were flying in those eras. The 747-8 would classify as a modern airliner, but if you only collect 741s, don't select modern. It's really just a rough guideline to help people think about what was in the air during those decades.

Quite interesting …

The RB 162, very few people know that the Trident 3 B had "four" engines.

For those who have been waiting, the results are in!

WHICH ERA OF AVIATION DO YOU COLLECT?

Overall winners:
1. Rapid Expansion (average score of 2.84)
2. Golden Age (average score of 2.78)
3. Modern Era (average score of 2.46)
4. Pioneers (average score of 2.02)

All four eras faired very well and I find it very interesting how close the results are. More people picked the MODERN ERA as their first choice than the other categories, but it still finished third overall because a huge amount of collectors had RAPID EXPANSION and GOLDEN AGE as their second choice overall. Thanks to everyone who took part.

Thank you for the time spent in this survey.

Would you please remind us the signification of Rapid Expansion, Modern Era … and there are TWO Golden Age (?).

Your link to the survey results are not working on Firefox. It says 'server not found'. Anyone else having problems?

That was the problem for me too. I think most members had different definitions for the categories, and with only 100 or so respondents out of 24,676 members, the results represent only less than 0.05% of the membership.

Still, the results were interesting. Modern era being the most popular was no surprise to me.

That was just mistyped. The fourth one is PIONEERS. The link should work now so all of the data can be viewed by clicking the link in my previous post.

Modern Era was not the most popular. It was third. The survey indicates that more people overall prefer the RAPID EXPANSION and GOLDEN ERA.

Perfect. Thank you very much.

Very interesting survey, it shows clearly that no category can be neglected.

Link is now working and I see the modern era was indeed third. My mistake.

That is not what I would have expected, but I think more of those members who would like to see more 'classics' produced probably were more likely to respond to this survey than were the membership at large. Still, interesting results.

Can you explane the algorithm used to determine the score? The survey did not force a response from all recipients to all questions so some my have answered and others not for their lesser choices. At best, you have IMO 85 max valid answers and the results presented now are skewed.

I don't think that's the case. 113 people responded to the question which is more than enough to be a "sample of the population" here. Modern Era was picked as number one by slightly more people, but FAR more people had Golden Age and Rapid Expansion as their second choice which boosted them up and over. I think that sounds pretty accurate too. most modern collectors had one of those as their second choice, and most collectors who collect older aircraft did not pick modern era as their second choice. I suspect this is actually fairly accurate. And while I didn't expect "Pioneers" to be up top, they also had an impressive showing which makes me think that die cast model builders need to focus more on spanning the entire history of commercial aviation. The focus as of late has been far too narrow.
