Default G-VFAB Virgin Birthday Girl

Probably should not post this here but at one time a very sought after model the Virgin 744 Birthday Girl , Lady Penelope repositioned from LHR to LGW yesterday and is now on its way to the desert of California for retirement..

I know that this model is the pride of many collectors and rarely is up for sale..

here is a previous thread with photos

DAC member Homer had one made by Brad Shinn too with flaps down

Not happy about this at all. Have two 1:200 models of her. The Bluebox version and the Skymarks

Sad news, indeed.

Al made one of these for me, as well, and I'm currently seeking a model of it (as well as the original AV200 release). Maybe someday I'll find them!

Very sad indeed. How do they even plan on replacing these 747s if they won't have any 777s by the time they plan to retire all 747s (April 2016)? If this happens, I think they will be the first major carrier to not have either the 777 or the 747.

Man, flying was 1000x more exciting just 3-4 years ago when every single carrier still had their 747s.

Yeah, and I'm actually a bit concerned that I will not get an opportunity to fly on one again before they are all retired.

I think the plan is to just replace with the 787-9's and not look for larger planes right now. Virgin has had a tough couple of years and I think they are holding off until they can get back in the black. I don't think they will actually take delivery of the A380.

The one bright side is that Lufthansa, Air China, and Korean Air are all major carriers that will continue to fly them for a very long time. If you are particular about flying a 747-400, since the newest ones are barely 10 years old, many of them will trickle down to smaller carriers and continue to serve for up to 2 more decades.

I will say that largely because of their 747 fleet, Lufthansa will be my choice of international carrier going forward. I know more than a few aviation enthusiasts that will do the same.
