Default --> PLEASE HELP! Paint chip on Gemini200 model!

Hello all.

I have recently bought a new Gemini200 WestJet 737-700 model, and I have discovered a big paint chip, and a small paint chip on the right horizontal stabilizer, and a another huge one on the APU exhaust.

I cannot return this model, or exchange it because I have already glued the landing gears on, and they only accept it in mint condition.

If anyone has any idea on how to cover the paint chips, please reply.

Thank you.

Yikes! Why would you glue the landing gear on?

I really don't have any recommendation on repairing paint. For that it is what it is.

You could always sell the the one you have in "as-is" condition and buy yourself another one.

I've done that before.

Would you post some pictures of the damage? Depending on how severe it is, I may be able to advise you on how to repair it.

If you want to glue gear I'd recommend a basic glue stick because it would very easily wash right off. I've only done this on hogan A319 and 320's but has worked good for me.

Micro Kristal Klear works great for putting almost anything back on a model, we use it on almost anything that does not require super glue. It goes on white, dries clear, and wipes off with water while wet without damaging paint or a clear coat.

If the big chip is on the white fuselage then I'd find some closely-matching enamel or laquer (Tamiya makes a laquer spray called Pure White that is practically identical to the white used on these models). Smooth out the chip with fine grade 600 or higher sandpaper. Mask the model carefully (or use the brush-on version of same paint) and apply a few coats allowing to dry fully between each application. Once the touch-up is satisfactory then out with the sandpaper again, this time start with 1000 grade to get the area smoothed out then finish it with 1200 grade. Finally, use rubbing compound (turtlewax is chaper than the hobby stuff) or even toothpaste, applying with a q-tip and working in a circular pattern. This should result in a seamless finish and won't require clearcoat as the buffing will eventually turn the sanded area glossy. Obviously there is some effort involved but by taking your time it ought to work. BTW my buddy also glued his gear in on the exact same model although he also got a fingerprint in the bottom with the superglue, said it was no big deal as no one looks at the bottom anyway (well, I do!). Don't feel badly, it's just something you learn along the way.

Hello all.

I said that the chips were on the right horizontal stabilizer, and the APU exhaust.

One of the model stores I go to sells model paint. Do you think I can buy one of these and use it? The model is diecast metal.

Thanks.

I glue the gears on because they fall off my plastic models, and since this was my first metal model, I just glued them on just in case if they fall off. I also like the gears down because I think it looks better that way.

Like I said show us pictures of how bad it is before you try and repair it. It may be easier to send it back and get a replacement.

That's a pretty big paint chip, if you could I would contact the retailer and see if they can swap the plane out for you. I know if someone had an issue like that with a model at the retailer I work at, we would gladly swap the plane. If you can't get it swapped then I can go grab the bottle of paint I use for repairs and let you know the item number once I get home.

If you go the repairing way i would suggest getting some enamel model paint and a very small paint brush. Get the closest colour grey you can find, then get black and a white, this way if the colour is a little off you can mix and match the colours. Enamel paint is pretty thick compared to other model paints and it should fill the small recess left by the missing paint. I have done this before on chipped die-cast models and if done well it can have very good results. Test the colour of the paint on a small none visible area, such as the landing gear area, in the wells they sit in.

Just be insanely careful not to get the paint anywhere else. And when i say a small brush, i mean one where the tip is as fine as a toothpick head.

Good luck, and the lesson learnt is always inspect the model first thing

Regards,
James

What I would do;

Id get enamel paints, like Humbrol #40 ( aircraft grey) and white #22 if Im not mistaken.
Then Id mix the two until the exact colour is found, it is possible, with good day light and a plastic card ( paper absorbs the paint not allowing for mixture)
Now with a small brush, Id start filling that area, drop by drop until it looked acceptable.
The other solution is to ask Gemini for extra parts to replace that one, they must have them at their factory.
Not sure this was damage caused by someone at the shop, another customer, etc, or just bad paint and lousy quality control at the factory.
Good luck!

I would say that the next time purchase another Gemini 200 737, don't glue the landing gears in place, I mean Gemini 200 gives you the option of taking them out whenever you feel like it, to me it's a no-no to glue the landing gears on... But one more thing, if this was your first ever Gemini 200 737 model, you must also try a Airbus A320 or A319 model and see for yourself how those look, compared with this 737-700, the 737-800/900 on the other hand are also nice ones to own...

Ok. I'll try to do that. My local model store sells those paints, so I'll be sure to grab a bottle of those the next time I visit them.

Thank you for your suggestion.

Modelmaster FS36495 (F) is a wonderful color to repair wings, it matches the Gemini Boeing grey color perfectly so you don't have to even mix it to obtain the correct color.

I googled it up, and I put my model side by side with the image, and the colour matched! Do you know where I can buy this paint?

Most hobby shops stock Model Master paint, or can easily order it for you. Just tell them the item number.

Ok. I heard that if you use this kind of paint, you can see the retouching, but if you use spray paint, would that work, without you seeing the retouching? If there is a spray paint, please tell me.

Keiths is no longer in North York. Disregard.

There is a store here in Newmarket called Zoom Room, they might have what you are looking for.

it is hard to fix unless you are used to build models (keep in mind that what makes you see a repair is a wrong color or an uneven surface)

- apply the correct color paints with a brush and let it cure for 2 days ( the retouch needs to be thick. it has to overlap the factory paint)
- wetsand th area (the goal is to have a smooth finish)
- spray a a bit of clear coat

et voilà fixed

A couple of places, but I'm not sure what area of Toronto you're in.

Aviation World carries models and supplies, and does carry ModelMaster products. (Well, they did last time I was there, anyhow)

If you are IN Toronto, try my 'haunt' , Wheels & Wings Hobbies on the Danforth. Totally stocked with supplies and kits. That place sucks up a whole morning when I pop in for supplies, etc.

->Wheels & Wings Hobbies - Toronto hobby shop - Retail Store Info

If you choose to go to Wheels & Wings, call first (416-752-0071) to confirm the paint is in stock, as they sometimes run out and their suppliers can't always keep up.
