HL1304 Hobby Master Douglas DC-3 CF-CPY, Canadian Pacific

REVIEW: HL1304 Hobby Master Douglas DC-3 CF-CPY, Canadian Pacific

I've been working with William at Hobby Master for over a year to make this model a reality and I was beyond excited when I picked up my mail today. This is the Canadian Pacific Douglas DC-3 that serves as the gate guardian at YXY in Whitehorse - Erik Nielsen International Airport. It is supposedly the world's largest weathervane and its nose is always pointed into the wind. It only requires a 5 km/h wind to turn it! As a Yukoner myself, I drive past this landmark every day on my way into work. I've been wanting one for my collection for a very long time.

Let's start with the model itself. We've all heard the skepticism and watched eyes roll whenever Hobby Master's DC-3 is brought up, especially when compared to the fantastic Gemini DC-3. As far as I can see, the only real fault with this model is the main landing gear. There's no denying that the landing gear lacks the detail of its Gemini competitor. However, the rest of the model is actually very good. On this particular release, the markings are bang-on. I do wish they had added the red tips on the props, but I can easily live without it.

The box art is really exciting to me because Hobby Master elected to use several of my photos! Yeah, that's my name in the bottom right corner of the box:

Here's the actual photo:

Typical for a 1/200 airliner, there's not much in the package to put together. Attach landing gear and/or put on stand:

Here it is assembled and on the stand:

Here's the model sitting next to my coffee cup that features the same plane:

I couldn't resist taking it on one small roadtrip today, so here it is on my dashboard:

And here it is next to the real CF-CPY. Looks pretty good, if you ask me!

Even though the landing gear is the model's one real shortcoming, as you can see, I have elected to display it with the gear down and on the stand - just like the actual aircraft. I'm very excited to have this plane in my collection and I would highly recommend it to anybody who collects 1/200 Canadian airliners, DC-3s, vintage airliners, or just likes the look of this particular plane. Of course, it should be considered a must for any collection of Canadian Pacific Airlines, CP Air, Canadian Airlines or even Air Canada, if you know the lineage. I hope you enjoyed my review.

Nice job Patrick!

You'll find a model means so much more to you when you're involved with its'
development.

I plan on adding one to my Canadian themed airliners collection.

It's definitely its weakest feature, but I certainly wouldn't let it deter me from getting a livery I wanted. You could always display it with the gear up. The rest of the plane looks and feels great.
