Nope. It was bare metal. There's even a topic about it on Airliners.net that I can provide you the link to. Like I said though if I recall correctly it was only the first 20 or so delivered in the early 80s that had them.

Here's a better picture that shows it next to a 727:

No problem guys! I didn't know these existed either until a couple years ago when I was scrolling through old pictures of DFW and came across one. I wonder if GJ would make one? I'm sure it would sell well, all old AA livery planes seem to sell out fast.

I don't see Gemini making a third release of an MD 82 any time soon because they are probably focusing more on the new and heritage liveries. Unless they have a new mold like the B747 and EMB Brasilia 120 (hope to see the AE in this mold). But of course it'll be very welcomed to see another one. I would really love to see the working together titles or the Tulsa one.
If it's polished.... sells very well and just look at the 757 One World..is now sold out and price is increasing on e bay, the MD 82 second release is hard to find now and over 100 bucks.
It'd be great to see the A300 in JCs mold released by Gemini. Also the Lockheed E-188 since the Eastern was released.
Missing special polished liveries: The 757 and 772 Susan G Komen. The 738 Flagship Liberty. 763 Spirit of San Francisco.738 Working Together. And the AE EMB 145 Susan G Komen and Veteran liveries.

An newGJ200 AA 727-123 or -223 would fly off the shelves. Yes Please!

By Bare metal tail, you must be referring to the Rudder? Early MD-80's were fitted with aluminum Rudders and Ailerons. These were phased out in late 85 and composite surfaces were supplied by Alenia from Italy. Consequently the Vertical Stabilizer was painted to match the gray topcoat of the composite surface. All part of the sales negotiation offset with Alitalia for their Mad Dog fleet. Eventually, Alenia became the principle manufacture of the entire fuselage of the B717. The Tailcones, I believe have always been constructed of composite and therefore have always been painted TF-707, Gray.

A prime example of a bare tail AA MD-82 SUPER 80 N203AA is linked here:

McDonnell Douglas MD-82 (DC-9-82) - American Airlines | Aviation Photo #0003470 | Airliners.net

AeroTransport Data Bank

She left the LGB MDC factory in early 1983 and was later retro-fitted and her vertical painted. She's since been dismantled and parted out in Roswell (ROW) by Allegiant Air folks in 2008.

I'd love to see a 787-9, A320, and CRJ900 all in the new livery! And any other birds that American/American Eagle fly with the new livery!

I would also like a 787-9 in the new colors, and a 757-200 (no winglets) in the old colors.

Absolutely positively must be done! All livery before current

767-200 regular
767-300 no WL
757-200 no WL
American Airlines N711ZX
737-300
737-800 no WL
AE EMB-120

And throw in N708TW hybrid, pretty please!

I would choose these before any re-releases or re-done types with different regs.

This model was produced in 1:200 by Gemini but only as a sample. American Airlines Boeing 757-200 (W) Susan G. Komen livery Reg:N664AA/5CM. Would be very welcome in the regular production line.

So if it was a sample did they just make one? Too bad it wasn't an actual release, I'm sure it would've sold well. The Veterans 757 did.

I saw this one on ebay and believe me I want it. But shipping is too expensive from Australia. Model looks great to me but there are some remains of the donnor cheatline. I am planning on doing one myself with airbrush and some tampo process.
I think these models were made by a member named Stang (Al). I saw his customized models and they are wonderful. He made a 777 Susan G. Komen out of a Gemini 200, a 767-200 regular polished livery out of a Flagship Independence and many others inluding an American Eagle Shorts 360 and the 767-300 One World livery. Photos all credit to the author which is Al King (Stang). Last time he posted was in June last year. Anybody knows about him?

I think there were about 3 samples and I am the lukiest out of them to have it. Flagship Freedom is also a beautiful model. Too bad it is not in service anymore. I see a couple of them on e bay now. And yes.. I agree. Polished sells very well.

Sounds cool, would love to see the results once you're done! This Al is really quite masterful to make that out of the regular releases. Can't see any leftover markings.

Has anybody got their Dec release of the AA 747-100 (G2AAL623) yet? How does it look and what mould have they used, JCW?

I bet Gemini will release the 787-9 this year. And the 757-200 can be customized from a N183AN (First release) by removing the wings and changing them for an Astrojet 757. But it can be very expensive to find those two and change engines as well as registrations. That's a project I want to work on this year.
Would love to tampo print "Pride of American" 757 Luxury Jet titles at the sides.

He is one heck of a talented and patient guy.
Follow this link to see actual pics of Raymond's post on the AA 741. Mold is JC/GJ and looks stunning. I love the engines.

I think I've found another MD-82 polished tail...

March 1985
American Airlines was one of the few airlines that operated into Santa Barbara with main-line jet aircraft. American started service to Santa Barbara in October 1984, from both Burbank and Bakersfield (continuing on to Dallas) using the McDonnell Douglas MD-80 aircraft. This was during a time when American Airlines was expanding service into secondary cities while establishing its mega-hub-and-spoke operation from Dallas-Ft. Worth. The Santa Barbara market wasn't sufficient enough to warrant non-stop routing hence the intermediate stops in neighboring "secondary" market cities, Burbank and Bakersfield. During 1988, American started daily, non-stop service to Dallas-Ft. Worth from Santa Barbara which became quite popular with tourists seeking the mild climate and sandy beaches. Parked at the terminal ramp during a morning turn-around is N245AA, a McDonnell Douglas DC-9-82 (MD-82), delivered new to the airline in August 1984.

Fun website. I want them all done by Gemini!

Santa Barbara

More I see it, the more I want it. It looks sexy. Love when they used to have the Super 80 titles. Just look at the stairway for passengers and the black nose radome.

Here is a unique 757. "Pride of American" N659AA/5CG. When they used to have the 757 Luxury Jet titles. At some point it didn't have winglets. Hoping to customized one from N183AN.

Yeah, thanks for your kind words.
AA collection so far
GJ200:
New Colors: 788, 738, 752, A319, E170, Erj145, Crj700
90's Colors: 763, Md80, 738, Md11, ATR72, Erj145
IF200: DC-10-30
JCW: Md88 Reno

Sold: GJ200, 773 New Colors but will get it back (sold it to a friend)

I've been selling most of my models, except for AA ones.
Still, I've added a couple of other models like Malasya 772, ANA 789 StarWars, Boeing 789 House Colors, 748i Sunrise Livery, 772 United Battleship, Singapore 744 Tropical, etc... I'm waiting for the ANZ 773 flaps extended variation and 738 Max House Colors.

It's like you're getting rid of your collection, bust somehow, one or two extra models arrive.
Past year I added 7 models but sold 19; four more are leaving my collection this month (JC and IF: Cathay 773 and 744 Asia World City, GJ: A343 Air Tahiti and A333 Virgin)

Ok seriously why have they not made a CRJ-200 mold yet? They made a -700 and -900 mold, and they've made the Dash-8 molds, and ERJ-140/145 molds. You'd think someone at GJ would realize that they should make a mold of one of the most popular regional jets of them all...

In other news if anyone has an AA 757 they would like to sell or trade me please PM me. I prefer a nmf one, but I won't be too picky. I have paypal or a ton of 1:72 and some 1:48 stuff if you're interested in a trade.

A new nmf 757-200.
Good seeing you back posting again. Wouldn't say no to another 757-200 and 727-200 polished livery.

Cheers buddy! I still lurk from time to time, just don't post much. I've been mulling the idea of selling off some of my 1:72 collection for space reasons. Buying models is no longer a working man's hobby! Haha. I find it hard to pay 3x what I paid for stuff just a few years ago.

I'd be happy enough with two workhorses, a plain Jane, non winglet 757 and a 727-200 rerelease. Both from GJ200.

I don't think American Airlines has ever flown polished 77-3s. The first B777-300 debuted wearing the merge livery. Am I wrong?

Yes please. Like the 73-8 and MD 82 second releases. They were all great.

I think You're right, there are some fake pictures of a polished 777-300 then I guess. Wouldn't mind a new release previous colours 777-200, the present Gemini one is getting very expensive on eBay!

We all (by "all" I mean AA lovers) enjoy AA releases, We just got the B741, the long awaited A321 and the 78-9 coming soon, but it seems that it will be hard to see B727,777,757 and Fokker 100 polished being re-released. Gemini will probably focus on the heritage liveries more than the classic bare metal now (hope I'm wrong). I was surprised to see the A300 by JC, so hopefully they will re-release those. Although I would like JC improve the box art and get rid of the art sleeve which usually gets damaged during shipping.

I would love to see a 737-800 polished without winglets. Yes, I know Inflight made one, but that one is garbage. The 737NG winglet looks tacky in my opinion (same with the 757 and 767), I prefer the look of a clean wing as the original engineers had intended. I would sell my AA 737-800 in a second if Gemini would make one.
