Default What's your collection criteria?

I'm fairly new to diecast model collection and I decided to base my collecting on three criteria.

1. I'm from Ireland so I decided to collect as many models as possible of Aer Lingus (Irish flag carrier) 'planes, both 1/200 & 1/400, especially the historic ones from the 1940's, 50's, 60's. & 70's.

2. Historic/iconic British airliners from the same period, both 1/200 & 1/400.

3. Historic/iconic US airliners from the same period, both 1/200 & 1/400.

What are other forum members collecting, and why? I'm interested to hear.

Default Re: What's your collection criteria?

I collect---

1)American Airlines models because I've been an AA F/A for 26 years

2)Some models of Allegheny, Mohawk and US Air because I grew up in the Northeast US at that time

3)Air France because my family is French-Canadian and it's the airline of my ethnic origins

4)Pan Am because of its history

5)Eastern because I flew them a lot as a kid on trips to Disney World and have lots of memories of them

6)JetBlue because they're such a fun airline from NYC

7)Although I've stopped collecting Delta, I can't part with my GJ200 Delta 767-300 current livery first release and the 727-200 Widget scheme with the polished belly

8)I have a few military transports- the USAF VC-32A (757-200) Air Force Two by GJ, and HM A310-300 Armée de l'Air/ French Air Force, and a few 1/200 fighters

I've thinned out my collection- no longer have models of United, BA/BOAC, Iberia, Easyjet, Air Canada and other random airlines/aircraft I used to have.

I collect the following

1. The most important criteria for me are getting the models that I have flown on.

2. USAir/US Airways because I'm from the Pittsburgh area and their hub was here for a long time. I have flown them more than any other airline and my first flight was on a USAir 737-400. In turn, they sort of became my favorite airline because of the all of the memories with them.

3. Air France (as well as some other French carriers) because my uncle is an Airbus A320 family captain the airline and my ethnicity is mostly French (and Italian which leads me to number 6).

4. Alitalia because they have one of the best liveries and I'm Italian.

5. Swissair/Swiss International because I've always like things Swiss.

6. American because they were the last major airline to have bare metal and I imagine I'll be flying on them more and more in the coming years.

7. Whatever else catches my eye due to the livery and accuracy of the mould. I've also developed this desire for models that have been long sold out. They just become more attractive that way.

I collect 1/200 Delta since I work for them. I also collect Delta 1/400 wide bodies if its not made in 200 scale. Also have some different companies but only like 1 or 2 from them. AA, Qantas, Hawaiian and some from the companies that Delta absorbed thru out the years.

Pretty simple criteria:

1. Everything Pan Am, as long as its jet-powered (for now). Primarily 1:200, but also 1:400 and a few 1:100 too.

2. 1:200 die cast 747s (-100, -200, -300 and -400, but not SPs, for now), belonging to airlines whose liveries I like.

3. 1:200 Concordes

4. 1:200 aircraft that I like, or have a personal connection to.

I'm collecting aircraft models whose real life counterparts I've managed to capture with my video camera.
It has to be the right registration, metal and 1/200.

I am fascinated by the early pioneer airlines that developed air routes in the twenties and thirties. I stay with 1/200 scale and collect both props and jets.

Imperial Airways
Pan American
Air France
Qantas

Anything else I can't resist...

Hi JSlevin

When I began collecting 8 years ago (in 1:400 only at the time), I made the expensive mistake of not setting myself a criteria - just buying what I like the look of!! I have kind of lost my way and as the hobby has become more addictive - well I just haven't been able to get off this slippery slope.

Just about to ring Model Aircraft Anonymous

I am considering packing it all in as my non-criteria and the never ending releases is making it very unsustainable. + I am short of space now anyway If I could start all over again, I guess it would be 1970s to present day visitors of East Midlands, Manchester, Leeds Bradford, and my local (tiny) airport Humberside - though even this criteria would be VAST if you take into account the number of low-cost/charter/regional/scheduled/and cargo aircraft that have used these airports over the past 40+ years!!

Mark.

I love 1:200 Colorful liveries and prefer Widebodies.

Aryelle likes anything as long as it is a 747. So, we have over 37 747 in 1:200 and close to 200 1:200 models in total. Maybe more, as I have not counted for a long time.

Pfff hard question, at first I had no criterias but for me certain boundries must be there because I like to many liveries and budget and space are the worst enemies!

Now I collect 1:200 only, have some 1:100 (8) and some corgi 1:144 (17) wich have to go in the near future to make more room for the 1:200's.

I mainly collect airlines with herritage so the older airlines. Airlines I mainly collect are:

1. KLM (because I'm Dutch and love to go to AMS)
2. Lufthansa because I'm a big Germany fan
3. Sabena (the classic livery is great and my mother went to America back in the early 60's on a Sabena 707)
4. Delta because I see them a lot at AMS and the old widgets are great
5. Swissair/Swiss like the classic livery
6. BOAC/ B.A. love the liveries and herritage
7. Air France

But I have also got models from American, JAL (only classic), Varig, United (because of the variaty in liveries), Qantas (long haul), house liveries Boeing and Airbus.

Favourite airframes (jet):

1. MD11/ DC10
2. Boeing 747 (all)
3. Boeing 707
4. Douglas DC-8
5. Tristar

Piston:

1. DC-7/6
2. Constellation
3. Electra
4. DC4/3
5. F-27

And so on...

I only collect models of aircraft that land at Brussels Airport.
I used to collect every model that I liked, but now I made my criteria much stricter.

And since many models that fly at EBBR aren't made (yet), I don't have a large collection

A number of my models are in the colours of Egyptair and Interflug. Other than that, I've bought models simply because I liked them. They are of differing scales and materials, though nothing smaller than 1/250. Present count is one hundred and fifty four models.

Mine are:

1:500

1.Widebodies from airlines worldwide, pax and cargo.
2.Narrowbodies and regionals from Europe, the Americas, North Africa and the Middle East, pax and cargo.
3. Military aircraft.

1:400

1. Narrowbodies and regionals from Europe, the Americas, North Africa and the Middle East, pax and cargo.
2. Military aircraft.

Crossing both scales is my aim to have at least one of every type of postwar airliner, primarily in 1:500 or in 1:400 where that's not possible, so I'm always eager for new moulds!

Cool Re: What's your collection criteria?

My modest collection is made up primarily of Air France 1:200 models. No, I'm not French, nor do I even live in Quebec. I will confess, I do love Paris and will continue to spend as much time there as I possibly can. But I digress . . .

I collect Air France because:
• One the most stylish/iconic liveries over the decades,
• Unique aircraft since the mid-30s,
• On the bleeding edge of aviation at various times (think: Comet, Concorde, 707, etc)
Faves in my collection currently are my Hogan F-WTSB Concorde, Herpa Viscount, Hogan Caravelle (which really should be re-done to correct that ghastly windscreen), and my Gemini 777-228ER.

I also have a small propliner collection in 1:144 which comprises of the commercial aircraft that I saw close-up as a kid during the late 50s/early 60s in Prince George, BC. Those are responsible for igniting the 'aviation madness' in me .

I collect (nearly) everything connected with Lufthansa from 1955 until 1985: Display models, timetables, adverts and give-aways. I chose that period because

  • Lufthansa started operations again in 1955 after World War 2,
  • Lufthansa was one of the iconic airlines of the early jet-age until deregulation started,
  • Lufthansa has one of the longest-lasting corporate designs in the airline business,
  • Lufthansa was launch-customer for the Boeing 727, Boeing 737 and Airbus A300.

I'm collecting the "History of flight", i.e. one of each type, from the beginning until today, commercial airliners only, many different airlines, chosen because of colorful or iconic (to me!) livery. Unfortunately the earliest successful airliners (Fokker, Junkers, Ford Trimotor, etc) are not available in 1:200.

I am thrilled when I see a Connie parked next to a Jumbo Jet and realize they performed the same task just 20 years apart. Or the MD11 next to it's direct competitor the Triple Seven, and understand why the 777 won (despite the much more attractive lines of the MD11......). Or how the DC9-10 evolved step by step into the MD90. Etc, etc, so many nice comparisons to be made, just not enough time to play.

1:200 BA, BOAC, BEA, BCal and related airlines. Particularly since the jet era. I especially like the BA World Tails and aim to have one of every tail on each of the types that carried it.

Any special bird that I either flew on, or saw in person.

Hybrid liveries. I find them fascinating.

Air France, because it's my second family, trying to expand my fleet with customs.

Iconic aircraft are also welcome, still waiting for a B 707-100 and a Comet 1.
