Just got back from the show...quite nice! Can get some pretty good deals here, and get an up-close peek at the new SMA MD-11 China Eastern, China Eastern Cargo and China Cargo. Gots myself the entire set.

Met up with the guru AK himself, owners of SMA...even JC himself made an appearance at this show. Wonder if he will setup a table next year.

I think they said the China Cargo is what is currently flying. A mechanic at the (Pudong) airport picked one up, and she said she has seen the China Cargo in use so she bought one.

These puppies were heavy...solid like the IF DC 10s.

I figured the China Cargo would be more popular give that's the current branding, the China Eastern Cargo will probably be as popular as the United Tristar, in that it wasn't popular because of the Pan Am (?) rego and limited usage, sometimes being unique is not good

This will defo be the start of a Chinese cargo fleet

Good question and I would add another one. What other MD-11s do you have in mind for future releases? You have to hurry up because Gemini or JC could take advantage.

I like how most of the replies are requests for other liveries instead of enjoying the one that this thread is about.

Well, that's the nature of this forum. It's understandable, though. SMA has just come out with what seems to be the best 1:200 MD-11, but so far only two releases. People are anxious to see the mould put to good use. I don't have a particular favorite airline/livery for the MD-11, but I'm looking forward to some iconic U.S. releases as well as KLM. I just checked the SMA website and noticed they have a pic of a (1:1) KLM MD-11 as the background. Perhaps it's a clue that they're planning to do a KL model sooner rather than later?

I asked SMA "the" question and got this reply - Thanks for the info! We have a "If it flew, we will do it" One of the great things about the MD-11, is the cool schemes the it flew in. We will do them all...Best Regards, Tom.

just set the engines to ground idle and wait for the one you want to cycle around.

That sums up every thread ever posted on this forum.... It's getting old

Anyway, at the rate SMA are releasing these to retailers (still don't know which ones) it'll be 20 years before that entire MD-11 users fleet is completed

And that is exactly why I set up and did the "what do you want/livery" surveys fpr other airframes. It gives a consolidated view of whats is wanted most and the manufacturer[s] get one list of prioritized requests based on input from a number of people to consider.

Somebody should step up and do one for the MD-11 [no, its not going to be me] like the one for the DC-10-10 which, with 47 replies does show some good if not surprising demand information with 2 weeks left for input.

I know Tom would welcome that type of input.

I still don't know which retailers got them, half the ones listed on the SMA site don't even have SMA listed as a brand on their site.

Did anyone actually get an SMA model ? Seriously ? Because I haven't seen any or many collector photos of their models being posted on here, which is unusual for should a hyped release and a popular aircraft.

I ordered mine from Eztoys. I'll post pics and thoughts of my American MD-11 when I get it. Eztoys has the American Md-11 and the Olympic 720. I hope to get the Olympic next payday.

Well I got my American MD-11 in and I can't take pics at work but here's a short preview of my formal review.

The model is well made for the most part. The landing gear and in flight panels are magnetic which makes switching between the two display modes easy. There's a little tool to help remove the landing gear up panels. However there's a smudge of the paint on the nose, and the rear engine wasn't in the nacelle! Found the engine stuck to upper packing foam, it places into the nacelle lightly, not sure if this is by design or bad quality control when packing the plane. However the smudge of paint on the nose, and the engine issue is VERY disappointing for the price of this model. Also a gripe is the lack of the stand. The spot is there for it in the box, but no stand. Again disappointing regarding the price. Now my gripes aside. This is besides the smudge and the engine a very well made and detailed model. The box is nicely packed(aside from possibly pulling out the rear engine). It feels solid and heavy, and overall very well constructed.

Did anyone get any of the china eastern models ? Anyone ? Because there should have been a couple of hundred floating around and yet no one owns one and no site has them in stock and no collectors have posted a pic of it yet. Something seems fishy

In any case, with that price tag and those issues, it's not worth it, hope GJ comes to the party soon with these models, at least they'll have them in stock when they say they do

Yeah, I'll be hesitant from further investment into SMA. The engine issue is a problem, the smudge, esp if they're hand made I could see someone accidentally bumping it or brushing against it when the paint was drying. Over all tho it is a good model. Engines one and three have a free moving fan, seems like every antenna and detail is there. Just those two flaws. I do hope SMA does respond. Will I return it? No, the smudge and the engine issue, while irritating given the cost is minor, I do like the magnetic attachment of the landing gear tho and it does seem very stable. Which is good given the weight. They should've included a stand tho :/.

sounds like a one off as my AA md11 has absolutely no flaws and I haven't read of any similar issues as of yet. I would consider sending it back for another if I was in your shoes.

looking forward to many more MDs from these guys, especially all three delta livs and a KLM 90s colors

I'm not upset or anything. Hell I was more ticked at the rear right landing gear falling off my 990A from Inflight200, as that is my ultimate, favorite plane and livery. I'm not looking for a return, nor a refund or anything. Just laying out my informal review. All in all its a great model, and I'm hoping as they progress they look for the small details. I'm lol very picky.

*shrugs* mistakes happen.

did anybody else notice that the rear fuselage cone is a little too much rounded....it would be nice if SMA could fix that.

EZ Toys has the SMA American MD-11 in stock. ezToys - Diecast Models and Collectibles - Thousands of Diecast Commercial Airliners & Military Aircraft Models ezToys - Diecast Models and Collectibles
And so does Diecast Airplane Diecast Airplanes: Diecast Airplane and Aircraft Models. Your collectible aviation source for Corgi, GeminiJets, Model Power, Dragon Wings, Century Wings, Realtoy, Motormax, Hogan Wings, Skymarks, Herpa, Jet X, InAir, and Franklin Mint Armour

I don't think any of them carried the China Eastern models, they are showing as sold out on the SMA website. I'm wondering if it was a corporate order or only went to shops in Asia.

The American model is very nice.
