Post AIR NORTH - Yukon's Airline

One seriously overlooked airline in the diecast world. Here's the story of Air North, the short version.

AIR NORTH was founded on February 1, 1977 by Joseph T. Sparling and Thomas Wood as Air North Charter and Training. They had a single Cessna 206, C-GLIZ

The company and fleet expanded over the next few years to include a variety of single-engined aircraft such as the DeHavilland Beaver, Otter, and Fairchild Husky.

Things really started to change in 1981 when Air North acquired the legendary Douglas DC-3 and DC-4 in their fleet. Air North started offering scheduled passenger service and cargo flights within the Yukon and into Alaska.

DOUGLAS DC-4 C-FGNI "YUKON TRADER", 1988

Just over ten years later, two important changes began: Air North retired the Douglas aircraft in favour of Hawker Siddeley 748 turboprops, and the Vuntut Gwitchin First Nation of Old Crow expressed an interest in investing in Air North.

HAWKER SIDDELEY 748 C-FAGI, 1997

The investment from the Vuntut Gwitchin made it possible a few years later, in 2002, for Air North to enter a whole new era: they purchased two Boeing 737 jets.

On June 2002, Air North began flying between Whitehorse and Vancouver, and also connected the Yukon with Alberta with flights to Calgary and Edmonton. The airline's growth was mirrored in new branding and the company adopted its current operating name of Air North, Yukon's Airline.

BOEING 737-200 FLEET, AT VANCOUVER - 2002

Since then, Air North has bought more aircraft and modernized its fleet with Boeing 737-400 and -500 jets, and expanded their route network to include Kelowna, in 2013, and an ambitious new flight connecting Whitehorse with Yellowknife and Ottawa in 2014.

From Air North's website:
Quote:
For almost 40 years, we've flown our passengers to great destionations in the Yukon, British Columbia, Alberta, Northwest Territories, and Ontario. In that time, we've become known for our authentic Yukon hospitality and committment to a world-class customer experience.

Our primary focus is on delivering air travel that is safe, convenient, reliable, and affordable.

We're an airline that invites you to expect something more-especially the unexpected. Did you know that our President and co-founder, Joe Sparling, is one of our Boeing 737 captains? Also, we're one of the largest employers in the Yukon Territory, with over 250 full and part-time employees - in addition to the more than 250 full and part-time employees who work in our Vancouver base, providing above and below the wing services for some of the world's biggest airlines in addition to our own flights.

One in fifteen Yukoners, including the Vuntut Gwitchin First Nation, hold an equity or employment stake in our airline.

Superb right up with photos. I had no idea they started with a little Cessna.

Zendocon, great write up. I have been to the Yukon a few times in a the last few years. I flew Air North on one of those trips and absolutely loved it. They even served small sandwiches, pop and cookies for the couple hour ride. (which in today's day an age is un heard of). They actually do quite a good job with their social media as well. They are often on twitter, and will frequently respond. The livery is great - especially the update. I do have the Herpa 1/200 model, as it is the only one released that I am aware of. Hopefully someone can make these planes in 1/200 but I wouldn't discriminate in 1/400.

The DC-3/DC-4 era of Air North:

These were the six Douglas aircraft that were operated by Air North during this era:

CF-CUG "Lady Lou"
1943 C-47A-40-DL
C/N: 9891
Registered to Air North from March 18th, 1980 until January 21, 1998.
Previously operated by the United States Air Force as 42-24029.
It is now registered as N9891A and owned by Princess Corp of Fairhop. It was dismantled in August 2012. Pieces of the aircraft lie derelict in Rifle, Colorado. The fuselage was transported to Vancouver and used for the filming of the CBC television show ARCTIC AIR starting Adam Beach.

CF-OVW "Yukon Sourdough"
1942 C-47A-5-DK
C/N: 12267
Registered to Air North from September 22, 1982 until 1998.
This aircraft was reregistered as N983DC and completely restored by the FAA (in Air North colours) in 2001. It was displayed at Oshkosh in 2001 and 2002. It is currently owned by Blue Ridge Piedmont & Chesapeake Airways in Delaware.

Here's a great 4 1/2 minute video of CF-OVW shot in Fairbanks, Alaska in 1994:
AIR NORTH DC-3
Video Description:
"Air North vintage Douglas DC-3 (C-47A-5-DK) CF-OVW (cn 12267) "Yukon Sourdough" is being loaded at Fairbanks International airport, June 1994. This 1944 vintage Dakota now lives in the US with tail number N983DC."

C-GZOF "Klondike Explorer"
1944 C-47B-1-DL
C/N: 20833
Registered to Air North from May 15, 1986 until damaged beyond repair on August 19, 1995
After a two-year lease period to Wagisla Air, the DC-3 was being ferried back to Air North. The aircraft took off from Vancouver runway 08 but was forced to return due to a no. 2 engine failure (overspeeding prop). The DC-3 struck the embankment of the Fraser River during the turn to runway 30. Both WAG pilots and an Air North mechanic were thrown through the windshield of the plane. The captain died in hospital eight days later.

C-FIMA "Yukon Musher"
1942 C-47A-20-DK
C/N: 13070
Registered to Air North from August 31, 1988 until 1998.
It is currently registered by Fly One (Las Cruces, New Mexico) as N844TH. It is reportedly parked at Falcon Field in Mesa, Arizona and missing its rudder.

C-FGHL
1944 DC3C-S1C3G
C/N: 12475
Registered to Air North from May 10, 1994 until May 11, 1998
It was originally delivered to the USAAF in 1944 and lend-leased to the RAF during WWII. It was used to carry out casualty evacuation flights from Normandy. It was purchased by Canadair in 1946 and brought to Canada. It saw use with at least six other companies in Canada including Ontario Central Airlines and Air Manitoba before ending up at Air North. Air North sold it in 1998. On July 20, 2000 it crashed shortly after take-off from Nassau International Airport, New Providence Island, Bahamas, while being operated by Allied Air Freight as N54AA. Both pilots were killed in the incident.

C-FGNI "Yukon Trader"
1944 C54A-DC
C/N: 10389
Registered to Air North from September 27, 1988 until damaged beyond repair on August 14, 1996
The number 2 engine separated from the aircraft as a result of an intense fire in the wing. The loss of the engine rendered the aircraft uncontrollable, and the pilots were forced to land in the river. The three crew escaped the burning aircraft, and the first officer and load master swam to safety. The captain is missing and is presumed to have drowned.

Any of these would be great candidates for Hobby Master, Gemini, or Western Models. They'd look fantastic alongside a 1/200 Buffalo collection.

Thanks Roy! That Husky is the hardest plane to find any information on. That photo was actually pulled from the Air North website, but I can't read the registration on the side. They label it as their "worst purchase ever," but it's a pretty cool looking plane.

The Hawker-Siddeley HS 748 turboprop era of Air North:

Since retiring their radial engine aircraft in 1998, Air North has been operating a fleet of Hawker Siddeley HS 748 turboprop airliners. Two HS 748s were registered to Air North in 1996. A third was added in 1998 as the final DC-3s were phased out of service. From 1998 until 2002, the HS 748 was the fleet's flagship. Four HS 748s are still in service with Air North. They operate the northern passenger flights and cargo routes as well as charter services.

C-FYDU
1970 Hawker Siddeley HS 748 Series 2A
C/N: 1694
Registered to Air North on August 29, 1996 and remains in service.

Here's a short 3 1/2 minute video of C-FYDU from YVR South Terminal shot last July that really gives you an idea of what those unique Rolls Royce engines sound like:

C-FAGI
1971 Hawker Siddeley HS 748 Series 2A
C/N: 1699
Registered to Air North on September 4, 1998 and remains in service.

C-FCSE
1970 Hawker Siddeley HS 748 Series 2A
C/N: 1679
Registered to Air North on April 27, 2006 and remains in service.

C-GANA
1978 Hawker Siddeley HS 748 Series 2A
C/N: 1758
Registered to Air North on May 9, 2012 and has since been deregistered. Used as a parts aircraft. C-GANA still wears the colours of First Air where she operated as C-GFNW.

From all this research, it sounds like there will be a 1/200 Air North model coming soon! Keeping tight lipped until there's something official to report, but I've been pushing for this for a long time. I'm very happy to see it paying off.

I'm hoping for something a bit more classic. I don't care for the new euro-white look.

One manufacturer has purchased the decals for an Air North model with the intent on releasing a 1/200 Air North plane. That's all I can say. I won't celebrate until it's parked in my cabinet, but it feels good that someone took notice.

That's what I thought. Air North does have a 500 with winglets, but I haven't seen decals for that plane. You'd have to modify one of these sheets or create your own. I have also seen decals for an Air North DC-3 somewhere. It comes on a sheet with decals for five Canadian airliner versions of the DC-3.

Exclamation Re: AIR NORTH - Yukon's Airline

No official photos yet, but a friend posted a couple shots of Air North's new ATR-42 on Facebook. Since they're already in the public domain, there's no harm in sharing them here. These shots are credited to David Philpott. Note the First Air registration, C-FTJB, is a sticker over top of the new Air North registration which will be C-FVGF. The First Air registration is applied for ferry flight purposes.

I am sure this will be a sell out fast model if it was to be released. Don't know why the manufacturers never focus on Canadian stuff often. Thank you for telling us this informational topic about the history of Air North. Never knew the started with a Cessna 206!

I missed it. I'll see if I can track one down. Thanks for the heads up! Air North is the only airline that still offers regularly scheduled passenger service. The ATRs will replace the Hawkers on the sked this year, but the Hawkers will remain in service as cargo machines.
