Talking New KLM B747-400 in new color scheme

Just announced on Aviation mega store website.
http://http://www.aviationmegastore.com/b747-400-klm-city-of-tokyo-ph-bft-new-colors--bbox2527-inflight-200-bbox2527-1200-inflight/product/?shopid=LM547f41435c93964b8d202e0dd4&action=prodinfo&parent_id=134&art=128340
Only confusion is that publisher mentioned is IF200, while the product reference indicates blue box model.
Either way, I pre-ordered mine

Yup, think the dolphin livery suites the 747 very well.

I trie hard to stay away from the "modern" jets but it is getting harder to withstand these new releases.

Hmm.

As posted by Marcus, BBOX2527 is noted to be the JC Wings release.

I'm probably in the minority, but I don't like this tweak to the KLM livery. I think it was fine as is, with a clean, straight cheatline. The way the line dips at the nose is awkward, especially on the 747. Throws off the look of the otherwise graceful nose.

KLM tried to fix what wasn't broken. At least they did't drastically change the paint scheme. But who knows, maybe this wavy stripe will grow on me, kinda like United's 787 wavy stripe did.

Wonder if it will be released in 1:400 one day.

I agree with you, I really don't like the change KLM made, I think it was prefect the way it was. On the other hand I did like the change United made with the 787s. I think that the United livery is fairly plain, but the wavy cheatline looks good.

I didn't like the wavy stripe on United's 787 at first, but it quickly grew on me. Now, I really like it. It nicely complements the 787's shape and I agree with you that it makes the livery less boring. Glad they left the straight line on the rest of the fleet, though. I don't think it would look good on the smaller/shorter airframes, and it's cool that they want to set apart the Dreamliners.

This KLM release is cool, and I guess love it or hate it, it is sporting the current livery. Personally I quite like it but there is a lot of other stuff coming out simoultaneously that I prefer, in an ideal world I could afford all the new releases I want, but this is one for the back burner for me, though with 480 planned I guess there will be a few lying around in stores or the 2nd hand market for a long time down the line from the release date. If it were a delivery colours bird with the old NW/KLM service badge however, I'd definitely have gone for one of those!

I think the tweak looks OK on everything BUT the 747. (not that we have a lot of types to sample yet) Maybe it should have been more gradual on the 747, or only dipped "half as far" or something?

United didn't "lower the stripes" on their 747s when they went from Saul-Bass-high to Saul-Bass-low, instead only changing the titles. Sometimes you've gotta modify the scheme for "unusual" plane-shapes. (like DC-10/L-1011 tails, and 747 humps)

^ Yeah, the wavy stripe definitely looks better on the 737. They got the proportions and curvature just right. Not feeling it on the smaller Cityhopper types, though.

Yup, you can still find the last IF200 release at retailers...

I just figured out what's wrong with it---a common mistake made when altering schemes for a 747---TITLES ARE TOO SMALL. They're smaller (vertically) than they used to be. It used to run from top of bottom window to bottom of top window---but no more. And there's more blue. So it's a smaller logo against a larger background---which makes the logo look too small.

It's like half the airline-paint-designers forget to take into account that the front end of a 747 is taller than the rest of it--and that means a front-placed logo/title needs to be vertically larger, to look right.

Just look at that itty-bitty logo squished inbetween the doors. Doesn't look right at all.

Good point, David. The previous size and placement of the logo on the 747s was perfect. Not sure why they decided to move it and make it smaller, but it definitely looks worse on the new version of the livery.

I completely agree with you. I think there is no reason to change a beautyfull livery as the KLM one.

Definitely a refreshed look on a KLM. It reminds me of the evolution of the Southwest Airlines livery change from the straight to the wavy line. So far, I like it. I do agree to the idea that the titles seem too small.
