I think the position and the size of the nose gear ruin the model though the mould itself looks pretty nice.

I don't even have words for the horrid wonky main landing gears.

So, I gave it a go as usual. The nose gear was removed at the first brush.

The nose gear strut has been made of an aliminum pipe (0.8mm O.D. x 0.4mm I.D.) and the steering pivot is a 0.4mm s/s rod. The O.D. of the nose tire has been reduced. The LH stuff is the original nose gear strut.

Here's the new nose gear and it has been installed.

To be continued,...

Aki-

Great discussion, and wonderful photos. I am holding out for the all-white Golden Crown- the first plane I ever flew on, in 1960. If that doesn't come out, I am up a creek without a paddle.

Wow, you have some skills, and an attention for detail too (I confess I had not noticed the discrepancy in the model's front gear placement compared to the real aircraft). Great photos. Looking forward to more of your posts.

Can you please post a pic of the side view of the model right side up as a comparison to the way it looked when you got it. Kind of like the side view of the front 'before' pic.

It would be much appreciated.

I suppose the nose gear placement is the same on all of the 880's.

Would of never noticed the difference between the two in a million years. Lets hope for a Golden Crown livery next.

Dear Aki, forgive me my ignorance, how do you remove the nose gear without breaking it or damaging the fuselage?

Yup, the shape of the VHF? antenna looks different from the actual one.

Here're the shots of the original model (upper) and modified one (lower). Note the position of the nose landing gear and the antenna.

Good work Aki. If I had the skills and facilities I would do it as well. Bugs me when connies are wrong. Herpa connie has nose wheel strut too far forward and I see it every time I look at the model.

Ever comes the day you decide to sell off your conversions, I'd be interested. I'm not a purist, I appreciate the effort you've put into modifying and perfecting your models. Wonderful work.

It looks something is wrong taking a look at the model in the fore and aft direction?...

The distance between wheels of all three gears is too long and the crooked main landing gear doors should be straight.

The nose strut was remade while repositioning the nose gear. The LH stuff in the photo is the original gear.

The main landing gears were removed and disassembled to fix the issues.

Though missing ship numberings, pseudo IATA logos on the nose and trim tab hinge covers which should not have been three but four could not be fixed by myself,

Hope you all would enjoy the mods.

Very good fixes on these problems. Thanks for sharing.

I can never understand why model mfrs. can not get it right. The inaccuracies that we see would not cost anything if it was done correctly.

Like I always say, if it can be done wrong, it can be done right the first time.

Let us not forget that, it is us, the sometimes lunatic and fanatical collectors that know our subjects so well, that we don't have to research it. The manufacturers just do not have the resources to know what us experts know already. I gave HM and New Western Models some good info on how to make their connies look right. HM didn't listen so well. Western Models did and incorporated some of my observations right from the start. That's what makes New Westerns the best looking connies. The fact that they accepted the offer from someone who knows, AND the will to get it right. The Western Electra and C46 bears this out.

If your nerd like knowledge would help to make a new model great, I urge you to make contact with the factories.....sometimes they listen.

And factories out there.......try to nurture a friendship with some of us nerds, there is so much knowledge on these forums. Its a shame not to use it.

Very nice investigative work and fix….! However, I will leave my 880 as is. It's pretty glorious to have this retrojet model.
OT:
collected to date:
880: TWA, Delta
990: Swissair, AA, Spantax

Awesome models. Glad to have them.

Excellent craftsmanship and a very fine report, Aki-san. It would be a pleasure to see your modifications incorporated into all future 880 releases in this scale. And thanks to you, we hopefully will see the Convair logo properly placed, when it comes time to release the much anticipated ...
