Two new 747 arrivals today, both from IF200. The lovely Avianca and the Iraqi (which looks very much at home next to its fleetmate). Here's a couple of pictures, and an overall shot of the top shelf of the 747 cabinets.

I've got 62 diecast with about 10 on pre order or on the way. And about a dozen Herpas. Love the 747s. can't wait for my cabinet guy to finish my cabinets so I can display them all. Great collection you have with some special models.

Question Re: 747 Collection

Beautiful collection but....

Has also the AVIANCA the problem with the yellowing white on the fuselage (this seems to be so by comparing this "white" with the white of the vertical fin )

Nope, the tail of my model is exactly the same colour as the top of the fuselage, pure snow white. Its really a striking livery.

Nice arrivals. Thanks for updating the fleet. I received 2 747's yesterday. If I am not mistaken I am counting 65 diecast 747's now.

Great additions mate, your collection is always pleasing to look at. The Iraqi is certainly a looker. Are you getting the BCal?

Yes, I pre-ordered the BCal as soon as I saw it. I also have the British Cargo (with the Negus tail), its hidden away at present, and will be wrapped up to go under the tree.

Also pre-ordered are the Lufthansa -8, Garuda, 80's Flying Tigers, Aer Lingus, and both Pan Ams.

Cool, you getting extra Ikea shelves then or will you be rotating your collection?

You've definitely got some decent models on order...the Aer Lingus will be a beauty.

I have the Shamrock bird, as well as the BCal, Clipper Defender, Flying Tigers shark mouth and Swissair 743 on my Xmas list...hoping most of them will be available for pick-up at the Heathrow aviation fair next month!

Yes, they are IKEA Detolf units. The glass shelves are strong enough to hold a couple diecast models. I've had a couple before I used for my plane models without issues.

I will have to start rotating my models on display, because I have so many on pre-order, and as you can see, there is no room left for new additions. What I also plan to do is box up the Concordes (as much as I am fond of them) to allow room for two more 747s. I now have BCal, Garuda, both Flying Tigers, both Pan Ams, Aer Lingus, China Airlines, National, Lufthansa, and JAL Cargo coming. BA Cargo is waiting for Christmas morning to be unboxed. The two Pan Ams will go with their fleetmates, on an extra shelf I will shortly add to one of the cabinets.

Yes, the cabinets are all Detolfs. Their chief advantage is that they are super inexpensive (all told, I have about $250 invested in all of my cabinets and that's including the 3 which display my Pan Am collection, and all the extra glass shelves). I just picked up another one for $20. No complaints from me about their sturdiness.

I would love to attend a really big aviation fair like Heathrow. I went to our local one last weekend, and departed with a few odd treasures (a few Pan Am decals, a couple of Pan Am buttons, and a nice cutaway 1:144 747 model by Revell that will be transformed into a custom), but there were no models that interested me (well there was one, but somebody else beat me to it). It was mostly Canadian airlines, 1:400 models and miscellaneous military stuff, none of which I collect.

Andy, you will have to update your "Holy Grail" list, Swissair, British Asia, and South African have been announced recently, did you order any of them? Also, I'm sure I've seen Cathay green striped 747-400 models for sale fairly often at various sites in recent months.

Very well, thank you.

The "Sharkmouth" '70s livery Flying Tigers arrived yesterday, to join the '80s livery Flying Tigers which came last week, along with the new Pan Am and JAL Cargo. The "Sharkmouth" will be wrapped up for under the tree. Also under the tree will be the BA Negus Cargo and likely one other IF200 747.

I have ordered Philippine Airlines delivery livery recently. As well, I have British Caledonian, China Airlines, Garuda, National, Lufthansa's 747-8, Aer Lingus, and the new Pan Am -SP on order.

I haven't updated this thread for a while. Thanks for your interest, and as requested, here are some photos, taken today. I have kept adding shelves as new models arrive, and I am almost maxed out. I have two 747 models on order, the Iberia and the original livery Aer Lingus. Here are some photos of the overall collection, and several closeups of recent arrivals (including Iran Air, Northwest, TWA last livery, Thai, the two Flying Tigers, and British Caledonian). Enjoy!

Now the game is who can identify how the collection is organized? Year? Airframe? Alphabetized airlines?

That's the same problem i also have, simply no more room to display all my models and even the ones still in their boxes i don't know where to put them... for now i only make purchases when i need too, otherwise i will have to make plans to display my new models in the garage or at my neighbors...

Great display Patrick, very classy. Nice to see you have got a rounded collection of many different airlines from all over the world, very colourful.
Do you think you will expand to a further detolf, or is this the collection practically completed now?

Thanks for your kind words. I have another Detolf, but there is no room for it in this room, unless I radically change things around. My collecting pace has slowed dramatically, as the 747 releases of late (or, more accurately over the last few years) have overwhelmingly been re-releases (and re-re-releases) of the same models.

There are several that I would like (Canadian Airlines International, Northwest Cargo and Northwest final livery immediately spring to mind). The last Detolf (far left) still has room for some additional shelves (I have two models on order). Several 747s have been confined to their boxes, too, due to lack of room.

I have never aimed to collect every 747 livery (that would be impossible) but only those that appeal to me aesthetically, or airlines that interest me historically.

Thanks! I have one -8 (Lufthansa), but since it shares the same livery as another "classic" already on display, I have returned it to its box. With regard to the SP, they interest me, but I have as yet not purchased any (aside from several in the Pan Am display). The 747 collection criteria is basically -100/200/300/400 models of this great airplane, and airlines of that are historically significant/interesting or liveries that are pleasing aesthetically to my eyes.
